Work On The Weekend

To you guys have to work on Saturday and Sunday? Also, what do you normally do on teacher training days?

Yes i work saturdays and sundays, from home silly me, would be great if we could work the occasional weekend for maintance, however i dont think it would go down well with the caretaker. His hours are long enough without of school time activities. Weekend is the best time to get things done without the phone going. plus i enjoy it.

We deliver training on pd days plus drop in session, e-mail active studio stuff and help with teaching resources problem.

I go in on the occasional Saturday morning to do things like set up lighting or do urgent changes to the servers. But I get no pay for it, so I do it rarely.

Generally we don't go in to work on weekends (last saturday being one exception due to server re-location and electrical problems) but if we do work weekends it is usually remotely.

I've just got back from work, spent all morning there! Only have to go in if there is server work that needs doing, or like this weekend, something that urgently needs doing for monday morning. Normally remote in both days of the weekend and end up doing something, and with all staff having remote access can get calls at evening's or weekends. If I've left my work phone on, its not unusual to get a call at 8pm on a saturday!

 

Teacher training days are just another day as far as work goes, we're in as normal.

I tend to catch up on admin jobs at the weekend as I never have the time to do it during an average week. It is my choice to work and I am not forced to but it makes my life easier if I do.

 

Remoting in is also something I do whether it is testing something out when nobody is on the network or running SIMS updates / patches etc.

 

In an average week I probably do about 50+ hours but as I mentioned above this is through choice.

To all you guys that remote in - what do you use? I've never been able to get an 'off the peg' application to work. (This maybe down to firewall issues in the SWGfL.)

 

I did manage to connect with Laplink Anywhere but it was so slow and unreliable I gave up on it.

 

I'd love to be able to do my SIMS updates remotely so I don't have to go in on a Sunday to get it done and to also do the odd task sat in the comfort of my lounge with a glass of beer.

http://www.logmein.com is what I use and it works everytime i've tried it up to now, it should tunnel through port 80 so it should work without any changes needed on your firewall.

I'm in on training days - it's a normal working day for me... there's always plenty to do!

 

Very, very occasionally I will go in at a weekend if I need to do something which requires everyone off the system. Usually, I can blag a weekday in the holidays to do this sort of thing though.

I SSH in to one of our linux servers (only one has port open through the firewall) and then create a tunnel for VNC to my workstation, RDP on the servers or SSH for another linux box.

Tend to remote in most weekends - generally to check network monitoring PC, and to do a job that requires the sort of concentration you can't get being in the office! LogMeIn does the job perfectly.

 

Never catch me in on a weekend unless it was something major like the whole network down, I do enough overtime as it is! Otherwise they'd begin to expect it.

 

Always in on baker days, a mix of tidying up from holiday work, and staff training mostly.

We're a boarding school so I have access all weekend, really useful for those pesky server reboots.

 

Tend to just use RDP to log in but with our 1Mb line its pretty useless when the boarders are online, would love to get a dedicated line for remote access.

No, we don't. They'd never pay us to either. We get told off if we're here at 6pm..heh. Even if we did point out it was due to us moving the video-entry phones around, which involves unpicking years of cable above the roof.

I never do No remote access set up yet and the caretakers dont like opening on Saturdays anyway, not that I would want to go! I like to forget about work at weekends

 

If I needed to fit a new server and there were no holidays coming up, I would go in on a Saturday (i have once before) but I would expect pay or time off during the week in return.

Our site is usually open at weekends as the site maintenance team are in doing things, so I could get in if I wanted to, but it would need to be something serious, and something which couldn't wait until the next holiday.

 

If I happen to be off for a long time during the longer holidays, then I will dial in my to voicemail and check emails periodically. Other than that, weekends/holidays are my time in which to have a life.

 

Training days are normal workings days for me - sometimes I might be giving some training, but usually we do the IT training in "twilight" sessions (i.e. a series of 3:30pm-5pm sessions). If I'm not training, then I take the opportunity of some quiet time to get my head down on those tasks which you can't do when the phone rings every 3 minutes.

I remote in or come in at weekends to do stuff I can't do during the working day (or I'm too tired to concentrate on properly by the end of the day). I tend to set servers off patching remotely and keep an eye on them while doing the hoovering .

 

My "no teachers here and no way for them to get to me" productivity levels are about 10x my 8-5 levels.

 

Then again, I'm a keyholder and I do get paid for it.

I will only work extra if I am paid for it, if there is a problem with a server - it'll get fixed within my working hours.

I work most Saturday mornings, but this is by choice!!! I encountered some child care issues when my son was born and I approached the Head with the suggestion that I don't work Mondays but would come in on Saturday mornings instead, thankfully he was very supportive.

I have to admit that I probably achieve more on Saturdays than I do on 1 or 1 1/2 normal working days as I have full access to everywhere whenever I need it and I dont get disturbed by staff or pupils. No problems with the caretaking staff as they are also in for the half day, but if I needed to I can gain access to the school at any time as I have keys for virtually everywhere and I am on the master controller list for the alarm system.

 

This is probably not everyones ideal working scenario, but for the time being it suits me down to the ground.

 

As for remote access, at the moment I use LogMeIn, but this is only because the county have tied all ports down tightly and you have to jump through hoops to try and get one open or get authorisation to tunnel through existing ones!!
