If I get another e-mail from a company wishing me Merry Christmas I'm sure I'm going to puke. Christmas used to be a religious occasion properly celebrated as such. Nowadays it's been hijacked and is nothing but commercialised humbug. That's the way I see it anyhow!

Every year it's sooner when the shops start stocking up with Christmas stuff, just makes me a feel a bit sick to be honest. In America they start in September.

 

My nan used to tell me all she got for Christmas was an orange, something to be said for that.

It's pretty easy to ignore at the moment, helps that I haven't done any shopping for it at all yet. Christmas starts for me in two weeks time - while I'm working, nope!

Err..or of course the Christians hijacked a pagan celebration....

 

Besides, it isn't really "nowadays" that it has been hijacked. It has been a commercial occasion for a very long time, certainly since we were children

I was listening to something on radio 4 about how winter traditions have got muddled.

 

For example, there's a chimney demon somewhere that has to be pacified by leaving food for it on the hearth once a year which is likely the origin of leaving food for Santa

and i'm so glad it has, if it was still religious oriented i would just ignore it completely. I get nice lights and decorations in the dark days, parties, gifts, shopping days and a few days off, thats what christmas is, i love it

I kind-of like Christmas. I'm not religious in the slightest and the overzealous consumerism is a bother to me. I may grumble about, but it's still nice to go see Mum and to be honest I think I do Christmas more for her sake than mine. I think if I had no immediate family Christmas would just pass as a day unmarked. It's a nice feeling when you give a gift and it's appreciated (and that applies all year-round) and of course, getting given 'free' stuff is always nice too I mostly just play the bah-humbug as a comedy bit. It makes other people laugh.

 

That being said, I hate Christmas decorations. I think they're gaudy and tasteless, and many verge into obnoxious or too loud (either visually or aurally), and I especially dislike the expectation that I'm supposed to go and buy a bunch of stuff (clothing, decorations, etc) that I'm going to store in a box for 49-out-of-52 weeks. And of course, being non-religious and having previously experienced extreme vilification for being Atheist, I'm not keen on religious displays (but that doesn't just apply to Christianity)

 

But it's not all bad. A lot of nice stuff gets done and Christmas. Charities, food banks, etc. And it's important to give credit where credit is due, a lot of that is organised by Churches and other religious establishments. Still.. If it has to be Christmas for you to be nice.. You're an (PAYDAY 2 Christmas album. Very NSFW)
