garethEds Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Why is it so difficult to tie down iPads? I am currently using Apple Configurator 2 - but there are so many settings that cannot be set - Location Services is one of them. We have a legacy meraki account but I've never really used it. What are people out there using for supporting their iPads? I wish they were as easy to configure as our Chromebooks. Cheers Gareth
DJ-1701 Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Well, to answer your first question, they were never really designed to be controllable assets for Business, so it's been taking them a long time to bring items under management based on feedback. At both schools we use Meraki to look after the iPads, but at the moment unfortunately no method will give you all the control you want.

I've never been a fan of iPads in secondary schools. Great for primary of course but not where demand is so high (like a Secondary). The Chromebooks on the other hand are a joy to work with. We only have 30 but are looking at another 60 in September. Gareth 1
ButterflyMoon Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Another for Meraki, we used it for over 400 iPads. My sole job daily!!! It handles most things but with Ipads there is always something new that you have to try and manage. It is a never ending learning curve. 2
Zoom7000 Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 +1 for Meraki here too. Luckily I only currently have 31 iPads to manage via Meraki, albeit we do have lots of legacy iPads that aren't managed at all. On the whole though, Meraki has been good albeit a steep learning curve as mentioned above.
witch Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Speak to @Joanne. She is a fount of knowledge on iPads
box_l Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 This is working well for us https://www.cellabus.com/ BoX
Joanne Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I'm using Apple Configurator 2 along with Lightspeed MDM. To be fair though, I don't have to lock mine down much, the kids are pretty good with them. Disabling location services causes a lot of apps issues - including the location data on the MDM. It isn't something I would ever do. What is your specific reason for doing it? What are the kids up to?
ITJS2015 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I am Using meraki, which I recommend highly. There support is not great but I have worked round it a lot over the last year. You will need to setup a Volume purchasing programme with apple for the school which manages MDMs for apps. Light speed it good but and the support it great but its 5pound a device for support each year. If you would like anymore information about any of the products please let me know and I will gladly help
Joanne Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Mine is included with our LA broadband subscription. I'm a very lucky girl.
jgmitchell Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I use Configurator 2 to lock the wallpapers and auto enroll them into our OS X Server where they are added to the departments' group. The apps are then assigned and pushed across automatically according to the groups the iPads are in.

ButterflyMoon Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 We didn't pay anything as we had Meraki while it was still free. All our pads were on when it went to paid. We kept the free version which meant no upgrades pr support but truth be known we had never used the support in all the years we used it.

Businesses everywhere are using enterprise apps with iPads and using an ENTERPRISE MDM/MAM solution, not something free of charge Why on earth would you want to turn off Location Services...?
DJ-1701 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 What complete tosh.... The fact that Businesses 'everywhere' are using enterprise apps now with iPads and an MDM solution doesn't mean they were designed for business, nor does it mean they are now, nor does it mean that the MDM solution is suitable for the environment. If they truly were designed for Business you would have more granular control. They are designed to be sold to a mass market. 1

I agree plus I will add that just because a business has a few iPads doesn't mean anything. They may not have an MDM solution in place and do the staff have it or is it just the CEOs? Every time I go about my day to day life outside of work and walk in to a business/company I rarely see an iPad and when I do... they are not using any specialised Apps.... maybe it's just my eye sight.. I see people sitting on their phones far more and laptops still. Also: + for Meraki 1
DJ-1701 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 (edited) Oh, also with regard to iPads, I would avoid using iCloud for storing data. As far as I am aware the data storage does not conform with the DPA (Re: EU Storage). Although if anyone can correct me, I would be very delighted. It is not in the DfE Guidance for Cloud software services, although I do check every so often to see if this has changed. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/cloud-services/159257-dfe-guidance-cloud-software-services-data-protection-act.html Edited June 16, 2016 by DJ-1701 1
Mullaney18 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 We run a legacy meraki at the minute for over 150 iPads. Just updated to Apple config 2 b cause I went El Capitan. I use the configurator to prepare and some what auto enrol with the url but it's never been straight forward (having to enter the wifi in all them). Meraki to manage apps and profiles. Can't get DEP properly. Was Recently quoted £17.50 per license for 3 years sub for new meraki. Though it has more management specially with over the air iOS updates, it's very pricey for the time I should actually use it for. Also half our iPads are IPad 2 which iOS 10 won't support so meraki's functionality would stop there.
mrwoberts Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Currently don't have an MDM and looking to switch to one - we now have close to 30 iPads. Looking for recommendations to get started. We have a Meraki Wireless network and pay the annual subscription (mandatory!!) for their cloud management of the wireless network. I'm now wondering whether that means we can manage our iPads through that same dashboard for free??? Or is that just wishful thinking? Help.
pantscat Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Hey @mrwoberts - you can use the Meraki MDM for free for up to 100 devices, so if you're quite happy with the look and feel of the dashboard, Meraki Systems Manager (their MDM product) is quite similar. Have a look here: https://meraki.cisco.com/products/systems-manager/ I'm aware of a few schools that are using Meraki MDM and it's working very well. 2
mrwoberts Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 @patscat Thank you, that's very good to hear. I took a quick look at it (will return later), and it looks very familiar. I'm going to see if I can track down a 'Beginner's Guide to getting started with all this, as I'm a total newbie to managing Apple mobile devices. Thanks again.
mrwoberts Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 https://itun.es/gb/fTEibb.l That may help you. Much appreciated, thank you.

SpaceInvader83 Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Most deployments of this nature are 1:1 and yes this can work very well. In education this is rarely the case and although it can work well (it works fine for us) it's by no means ideal and certainly lacks the granular ability I would like, this being said it has certainly improved especially with ios9.
