ICTDirect_Dave Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 So I have some free cash in the bank this month which makes a nice change and my question is this. Should I sell me GTX970 and get a 980Ti, or wait 6 months and see what the new range of nVidia cards offers? I'd normally wait, but i know my 970 still has some decent value and I may not have spare cash in six months. Advice anybody?
bossman Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 @ICTDirect_Dave Give up the Gaming addiction and save yourself a pot of money!! Treat yourself to something real which will last predominantly longer than the next update!! Just my pennies worth bud
LeMarchand Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Put it in a short-term investment that you can only access after x months?

If I get to treat myself to a couple of hours per week I'm lucky. However, I have all the material things I need, but an upgrade is always tempting
DJ-1701 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) It depends if you feel the need to upgrade at the moment and if there are any games coming out that would benefit from a newer graphics card. Personally, if there are some out in 6 months, I would wait, assign any cash I would spend on a graphics card to savings account so it's out of mind... Otherwise I might be tempted to do something like purchase a computer for my home lab from ICT Direct. Edited May 5, 2016 by DJ-1701

However, I'll likely not get as much return from selling my 970 if i wait, hence my question. Otherwise I might be tempted to do something like purchase a computer for my home lab from ICT Direct. I can see how you would be tempted. We are Excellent after all! However working here as I do, you can assume that if there's a shiny new toy, then I'm going to make sure I get first dibs
DalekSec Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I have a 980ti and I absolutely love it! I can play any game on max settings at a decent FPS, when I get some spare going to get another for SLI
L3OUGH Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Stick with what you've got Dave. I have a MSI 970 and I don't struggle to run anything. Unless your wanting 4k gaming why bother? SIDE NOTE: The batteries were successfully collected yesterday! You should know what I'm on about!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 SIDE NOTE: The batteries were successfully collected yesterday! You should know what I'm on about! Why didn't i put two and two together and work out who you were? I've amended your account with your EG name so I don't forget! There are loads of you who's real names I know yet I have no idea of your EG username. @DJ-1701 for example, haven't a clue who you are IRL and you've bought from us! Stick with what you've got Dave. I have a MSI 970 and I don't struggle to run anything. Unless your wanting 4k gaming why bother? Currently I'm playing in 2560 x 1440, but I'm being tempted by 4K, it has to be said. A 4k curved screen sounds lovely to me!
bossman Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Addiction? don't be silly, I don't have time to be addicted. If I get to treat myself to a couple of hours per week I'm lucky. Hmm! spending enormous wads of cash on something you don't really get the time to use or play on doesn't sound like a good investment from my perspective! But as you have all your material things you need then I suppose one could say "Its your money! Go spend it!" What about your other half? Not want to spend it on them?

I don't know his real name and I work with him We're most likely the only known nutters in the SN5 area using you

ICTDirect_Dave Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 We're most likely the only known nutters in the SN5 area using you You're not the only school in SN5 that we deal with... But you might be the only nutters
localzuk Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I'd say there's no point in upgrading personally. I'd wait. Spend the money on something useful, like HTC Vive. Bet you'd enjoy Elite Dangerous on that...

Bet you'd enjoy Elite Dangerous on that... I thought about that, I do spend most of my time on Elite. But then I just read this: HTC Vive's "Resolution Issue" In Elite: Dangerous Is Damning
LeMarchand Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 You could spend the money on other rig improvements: The Greatest Elite Dangerous Gaming Rigs! - MoviePilot.com . (I think someone has already posted that last one elsewhere on the forum).
mrbios Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 nvidia have an announcement coming 2AM Saturday morning UK time. Wait for that
ICTDirect_Dave Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 nvidia have an announcement coming 2AM Saturday morning UK time. Wait for that Yep. Saw that All plans on hold for now...
mrbios Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Safe to say the 1080 looks like an AWESOME card! I've been hanging on to my 780 for a while now, i don't think i'd have the patience to wait for the 1080ti with HBM2 memory, so 1080 may well be my next card......now to try and muster the patience to wait for the non-reference coolers! (Cards released on the 27th, my birthday is the 31st...nice timing nvidia!)
ICTDirect_Dave Posted May 7, 2016 Author Posted May 7, 2016 Yep. I'll be getting my hands on a 1080 too I believe. The new reference cooler looks cool but I'm not sure when the third party cards will be out.
haldarulon Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I have a much better idea! Just give me the money so i can put it towards buying a new road bike I dont need to upgrade PC (yet) will wait for next gen cards.
GuyJD Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 The 1080 and 1070 cards do like they are worth waiting for
