What switches do you use?

HI Edugeekers....

It's poll time again....

There always seems to be a large amount of questions on the forum about what switches people use and what they should buy. A bit similar to other posts and polls, I am asking what switches you are using there will also be an option for modular and fixed format so please choose both make and the type of switch.

 

I look forward to seeing your responses which might help others on the forum.

HP Procurve 2920 at the core with HP Procurve 2530s at the edge with/without PoE depending on if we need phones or APs connected. Working really well for us in primary!

mainly managed hps these days 1800/xxg or current equivalent. Use tp link for unmanaged gb poe switches to power wifi points etc usually though have used 3com/hp in the past. Wondering if it worth giving dell a try at some point at least server/network cabs would look consistent lol

Voted... @VeryPC_Anthony_L - Andrew Hopton got in touch with me a while ago about getting involved at one of the ANME meetings - not heard back from him yet though... We've got quite a lot of stats of solutions used, including switches, which are shared with the members, but which can be seen at the meetings too...

Did have a serious look at the Cisco 3850's but the on going support costs ruled it out.

Just wondering what support costs please? They have a life time warranty. Software support information is readily available on the internet, plus it won't cost much to get someone Cisco certified.

Think it was called SmartNet or something. We were looking at not only purchasing about 20 units in the order but in the future replacing the cores and then the other 40 edge switches so a big £££££££'s

 

The Cisco 3850's were great looking switches though and caparable with or even better than the HP 3800's. The HP 3800's have given us a few PoE issues, replaced 3 or 4 switches over the last 2 years.

 

I certified CCNA over 10 years ago and have recently re-done the curriculum but not sat the test yet :-( .

You don't really need smartnet for a school setup. I just keep a spare on the shelf as a hot swap and use the standard lifetime warrenty.

We use HP 4108Gl at the core and a mixture of 2848, 1800 and 2510 and some PoE HP's as well

Should really split the HP option to the old 3com range and the budget procurve range. I'm sure I heard hp were getting rid of their procurve line though ?
