Fazza Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Sneider/APC UPSs on our switches - 1U rack mounted things, mainly to prevent power surges from damaging the switches with the added bonus of around 20 minutes or so power should there be a power cut. 1
Trojan Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 APC UPS on the core cab. As above to prevent damage from a spike or surge rather than to keep them online. We had a spike a few weeks ago that fried the management card in the core switch. So a UPS was added to prevent this. 1

ITGURU Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 All Server Rooms have UPS to the core switches and servers . Data cabs located around the site have no UPS, however our admin area does have an UPS to power the POE switch so in the event of a full power cut (as we did last week), the reception/admin phones are still useable during the outage.

Chris_ Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 We decided to go with a 1u UPS from Tripplite for all of our switch cabs, mainly because it's quite shallow at around 30cm (the APC equivalent is around 40cm) and we didn't really fancy replacing 25+ cabinets around the school with deeper ones!! twin--turbo Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Whilst on the subject Our system gave an alert for high current usage on one circuit last month? It jumped from 20A load to 30A load in a matter of mins!! on a 32A circuit it was close to tripping!! After looking at all the load sites in the server room I found the circuit was powering something outside the server room. Now our UPS supplies two department floor sockets for PC's/teminals in the event of a power fail unitl the gen-set kicks in... I was a bit confused but jokingly said to the helpdesk manager... "Call center aint rocking any power hungry devices are they, like heaters???" he laughed and said he would check.... Turns out the bloomin well were FFS!!! TT

Although the Tripplite one has 6x outputs, only 4 are battery backed, the other 2 are only surge protected, and by using the software on a PC connected via USB/serial you can switch these 2 sockets on/off.

Rob_D Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 We recently put UPS units into most of our switch cabinets (we need to find a solution for a couple of very full wall mounted satelite cabs). This is how we found a 6 stack of older 3com switches pulls nearly 700w. (It overloaded an APC500 series)
