So the deputy head has come to us wanting this wonderful plan put into action.

He wants to push a coloured screen down to PC's at the click of a button. So for example, it turns a PC screen red in the event of an incident. Staff then know to evacuate or an incident is occurring.

Any idea's? Doesn't have to be free software, but has to be easy to use!

This is instead of sound alerts, as it one incident could be an intruder to site.

We were looking at this kind of thing before, and decided against it due to issues with "there's no screen oh everything is fine" kind of attitudes.

But we were just looking at a custom VB program, just monitors an internal website and if it sees "XYZ" it full screens the program and reports message

But why would you not want a sound if an intruder is on site? What about PE staff out on the fields?

A sound would make the most sense as anyone in-between classes would know, staff on their break would know, if the sound was loud enough then staff outside would know. Seems very limiting to not use a sound. If it is to not tip the intruder off that they have been discovered then I would say that would be a good thing as it might make them scarper.

The only time I have heard of not using an alarm was when working in London and if a bomb was thought to be present.

Our previous Head wanted us to put a system in place using the lesson change/fire bells with a combination of rings (which was not very practical because who is going to count the number of bell rings and look it up in a chart!)

When we had a new head a couple of years ago, we revisited it with the possibility of expanding our Bodet system and putting in melody sounders everywhere instead of using the fire bells, then we could have pre-programmed messages that could be triggered by hitting a certain button, but that also never progressed past planning stage as the cost was outside of our budget.

So technically we have a procedure via the bells, not that anyone knows about it. And with the location of our site (in the middle of the countryside) it's not exact high priority it seems.

We do have LAN school, but that would mean every PC being on the same channel which isn't pratical.

I hear what you are saying about the issues, but the deputy is having none of it...

does your phone system have the emergency page system built into it like ours does ?

on our toshiba system, you can dial a code (wont put it up here for obvious reasons) and it will then do a speaker announcement over all handsets.

obviously this relies on telephones being present in classrooms as I pointed out here and the obvious issues where telephones are stored in cupboard or offices and people being in a gymnasium/sports field.

From looking at it here, there is no perfect system.

Shakes his head....is n't it your job to explain to him the technical options and costs and limitations of each? Just saying he is having none of it sounds a bit defeatist to me....

I set the cat amongst the pigeons here suggesting a "School Bell" via teachers' PCs. If that can be done (and I don't yet know if it can) then I'd think that in principle so could an alarm system.

I don't know how...

My last place had modifications to the fire alarm, and a few 'lockdown' callpoints situated in various locations through the school. When smashed, a different tone would sound which our staff/students would be familiar with and then the correct procedures were to be followed.

Best option imo

My last place had a five bells system, the lesson change bell was manually rung five times in quick succession which meant teachers were to lock their classroom doors and office staff were to close their office doors (but not lock them!).

I'm not sure what the procedure was if the person who was supposed to be ringing the bell was actually the maniac.

Must be something in the air, we had a call this morning asking them same.

No point using the IT, to many chances for teachers not to get the message.

Advised to get the alarm company to look at changing the bells

Our deputy reckons using bells would startle/spook the intruder and could cause more issues...

Is there ever a position/room/etc where you can't see a screen or two..?

Do you not have a tannoy system? You could do what supermarkets do. "Could Mr. Green please come to the manager's office?" means "uh-oh bomb scare!"
