kennysarmy Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 We've got a very old WORD document that contains a map/plan of the school - it now needs updating and it's virtually impossible to do so - whilst the document does n't seem that large it causes the PC to run extremely slow as every line on the map needs to be rendered I guess. So the question is - is anyone else responsible for updating or making the schools map/plan and what software do you use? I've got an old version of AutoCAD but wondered if there was anything simpler I could use.
dgsmith Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I redid our map during the summer - having looked at what software would be available, I eventually settled on... paint.net(!) Yup, it was all carefully and manually drawn up using the old map as reference. The old map had been modified over the years, also in paint.net, but over time had become somewhat bland. I am sure there are far better ways of creating maps, however with it just being painted lines then once it's complete, it's so much easier to modify etc and still looks good!

FragglePete Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Ditto to Illustrator - managed to get hold of CAD plans (PDF Format) and import these into Illustrator, trace them and then make it all look nice. (It's the Graphic Designer in me!). If I had the time, I would love to reproduce it in an isometric Minecraft type view! Pete

Pete Ah - we've got CS6 so I could use Illustrator for no cost and I'm guessing I could print to PDF the current plan and then use that as a layer to trace over?

unixman_again Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I did ours in Sketch-Up. The site surveyed plans were scanned as a PDF and then imported and I built the 3D model. This might seem overkill, but the plan view gives us the map, an isometric view is used for our interactive map, where you click on a building and it shows you photos and gives information. SMT also want me to do a virtual walk around the college. One day, I'm hoping to get the go ahead to get it all 3D printed and put in a case in reception. 1
Zourous Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I use excel and use the borders on the cells. Ok, not really what it's designed for, but it works and staff can follow it, so why make pay £££'s when you don't need to.
3s-gtech Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Illustrator is ideal, or Inkscape for those without CS (Inkscape is ace, I've done work in and like them both). I got halfway through doing ours, but we have a big site - must motivate!

Used our Fire Exit map for scale and took LOADS of pictures around the campus to get the details. jahilton2002: lots of patience, trial and error in terms of getting dimensions and scale right. and have a bit of fun with it!
