I went to Southwold yesterday where a portion of chips is £2.00. Sausage and chips is £6.25! He was surprised when I said I wasn't happy to pay £4.25 for a sausage. "It is a jumbo" he said.

The local chippy here (the mighty Nobletts) is much more reasonable. LG fish & chips, plus jumbo sausage & chips, plus 2 x can of pop nd a bread roll costs me a little over a tenner!

Ahhh Southwold!

 

The seaside resort for people with more money than sense ... A beach with very little sand, a fantastic view of Sizewell nuclear power station, a high street and harbour filled with extortionately priced pubs, boutiques, and restaurants.

 

If you drive for another 30 minutes up the A12 you will arrive in Gorleston ... altogether a much nicer day out.

I'd agree with most of that, apart from the 'very little sand'. At the pier, there isn't a great deal but there is some, you head up the prom though and there is almost nothing but sand on the beach! Sizewell does somewhat spoil it......

Nobletts is our favorite. Friday is chippy tea night (I finish work late usually and the kids have a club to go to so we eat at about 6:30pm). 2x Large fish (+reg chips) for us and the kids have either sausage or fish depending on mood. With a large gravy it comes to £18 :)

They haven't nailed curry sauce yet though.

They do make good everything (apart form the curry), and it's brilliant that they're just a two minute walk from my house now :)

That is scandalous tbh, Jumbo Sausage and chips anywhere down here at max is around £3.50

I assume we're both thinking of the same local, overpriced southern chippy!

 

That's outragous pricing! The menu tries to make it sound like a restaurant too.

All that is missing is tubs of 'jus' (small - large) on there!!

I'm not a big fan of chain chip shops as in my experience they generally give smaller portions because of the 'quality' :(

We have one near us and their chips come in vacuumed packed bags and the fish is pre battered.

I was thinking earlier about this and there is a local chinese takeaway here that is rammed full all the time, the food is lovely in fairness, but its expensive, the Special Fried rice is a tiny bit below £7, which I think is awful, going by that price mentioned in the first thread, I can't believe thats average either.

Depends, I've seen some Special Fried Rice at about £6.50 at it was a huge portion (f'narr f'narr) , easily enough for 2/3 people, works out alright if you think of it like that.

@Dos_BoxTo be fair, it is a restaurant as well and I think this might be the menu for that.

I find places like Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington with prices like that. Saying that some of the chippys down the front here (Cleethorpes) are stupidly priced although I have got one in land a bit around the corner from me that is reasonable. Medium fish and chips costs me £4.10 but the sizing is a good large compared to most places.

 

I'm a bit of a take away snob and I find most of the ones along the coast are poor with an odd good one chucked in. Considering we used to be a big fish town (Grimsby) I've tried the majority of the chip shops and there are probably less than 5 that are any good and value for money. There is a restaurant in Cleethorpes, which everyone rates, is queuing out the door but they are over priced, poor quality and nothing special. Think its more of a think for the trippers.

 

Now chinese, some people like some others hate it, my biggest problem is the greasy ones, again I had a perfect one when I lived in the village but when I came into Cleethorpes although there is many could I as hell find something decent, think I tried 4 that are local ish to me, at one point I was travelling 12 miles back out to the village to pick mine up till I found one a little closer than does a main and side (chips/rice/prawn crackers etc) for £5.50 on a Monday - Thursday even my loyal friend in the village cannot beat that.

 

I don't mind paying a bit for food but it has to be good hence so picky. Yet to find a good chippy along the New Forest/Hampshire area when I am away if anyone can recommend one. There used to be one in Lyndhurst which wasn't too bad but its since closed.

What's wrong with that menu? Looks like normal pricing to me.....

In the small town I live in there are two chippys. We have to use only one of them as both my wife and daughter think that the chips from the other one are "too potatoey"!!?

The only place in Scarborough you should visit is the Chip Pan on South Bay sea front. Marvellous food, great prices!
