Our school canteen have started selling nachos as their main meal of the day (3 days a week!!!). It's basically a plate of plain flavourless tortilla chips, with cold grated cheese sprinkled over. The cheese doesn't melt and it's served with a small pot of tomato salsa.

What gems are being served at your place?

I don't know. I don't think I've been in the actual canteen for a couple of years. We moved to a new vendor about 18 months ago who've invested heavily in the facilities side of things, but the food I see being carted about doesn't seem to be up to much.

I was issued with a pot of sauce on Friday. Now, this sauce pot is about 4 cm in diameter at the bottom. The sauce didn't even cover it. I was able to dip 5 chips before it was gone. 5 chips.

I made a thread on this a while back involving a chicken wrap. I'll see what's on offer today....

we have 2 options each day

1) pizza and chips

2) the daily special - usually crisps (nachos), curry or pasta pots.

I look back on the days of lasagne, sherpherds pie and turkey twizzers with a tear in my eye.

I believe today it's Spanish Chicken with Peppers & Fresh Basil (served with Lemon Rice) or Three Bean Stew with Paprika Roasted Quorn (served with Green Beans and Courgette) and for pudding is a Strawberry Swirl Cheesecake.

And that's just 2 hot meal choices, there is also the wraps and other "on the go" options.

We have loads of nice meals!

Pasta kings! (Can be a bit sloppy sometimes, but most times nice!)

Fish in sauce, wish warm smooth mash! Yummy! ( I always laugh when i see the apprentice cook, mashing potatoes all morning )

Sausage rolls

Chips & pizza! Only on a Friday though

Range of baguettes and sandwiches, cheese and coleslaw! Yummy!

That's a little bit of the range! Let me know how many want to come over for lunch! ;)

Actually we have really good meals! Shame the horse burgers went the other year but the roasts, curries, bakes and what-have-you they concoct is beyond just "edible" it's actually really nice. Paninis on offer, baguettes and sarnies and so on.

The crowning glory though is the salad bar. Now, no salad bar is going to be MEGA nice let's face it, but this stuff is WORTH having. Boiled eggs, pasta, leafy things, all can be COMPRESSED VIOLENTLY into one of the single-portion salad containers and as long as I can close the lid, it's legit.

To be honest, I rob that salad bar blind at least once a week.

Why do I now have the mental image of someone with a wild gleam in their eye and a mallet in their hand gleefully hammering away at the various greenery on offer?

Ours arn't perfect (too much pasta for me) but generally they're pretty good. Curries, chillies, roasts, mexican, great choice on Fridays as well as fish and chips, and a full salad bar every day. And it's free so really can't complain

For today I had a choice of lasagne, poached salmon with/without hollandaise sauce, gammon steak with/without pineapple, southern fried chicken or beef mince with some sort of pasta. I took the chicken with a side of steamed green beans, a bowl of mushroom soup, crusty roll and a banana.

The lasagne was vegetarian.

and today was one of the bad days here

Food here is usually pretty good and they vary the main meals of the day quite a bit, e.g. in the last week we have had: Chicken Chasseur, Beef Goulash, Braised Stuffed peppers, Lamb Kleftiko, Moussaka, Liver & Bacon with Mash, and Roast pork with stuffing & apple sauce.

Free?!? We pay more than the kids do!

The sandwiches are ok here, but expensive, never had a hot meal because I have to do a lunch duty :(

I'm astonished some of these get through the healthy schools guff, there's all sorts of restrictions there.

As for me... well, our school canteen was given an award just before Summer by the D of E. It's officially the best in the country :D staff training days are a delight.

Maybe it is because we get the food "bussed in" but it really isn't great. The veggie sausages used to be lovely but then they changed their supplier. :(

Everything smells the same and looks a bit grey and there is too much processed food or "cakey" puddings.

It isn't that healthy and I don't know how they get around the rules - mind you, small cubes of fried potato aren't chips, are they :)

The food here is amazing, our head chef works hard to ensure its all fresh and varied. Tomorrow we have Romanian Pork, Canadian Mince and Potato Bake or Mushroom Stroganoff with Noodles followed by Steamed Chocolate Sponge with Chocolate Custard. There is also a selection of sandwiches and wraps for £1

Before we had our current company come in, it was pasta slop, same salad bar and sausage rolls

Now its pizza, panini, more cheese, more bread and the normal hot meals.
