I wrote ours in line with the school's raising achievement plan. That way I could see what the school's aims were overall and could plan the IT spending to enable this. Over the past 3 years we've completely changed the way our IT works, but it was always with teaching and learning outcomes in mind.

To do it properly does take a lot of time. Once initial stages were completed with representation from the Governing Body, SLT, Faculty etc. a smaller group met on a regular basis to work on strategy etc. and be updated on progress.

Everything that's been said is spot on. We made sure to get input from all stakeholders, that includes pupils, parents etc. As has already been said, you need to decide in the beginning exactly what the establishments requirement is before doing anything else. That can and probably should be in the form of a non-technical aspiration/vision document linked with whole school development plans. It's quite a long process and after that it's up to you to do the technical planning to try and achieve that. We found that some things that came up, simply weren't possible, yet, or there were logistical issues that could not be solved, but that usually ended with an alternative suggestion.

We made a 10 year long term forecast, then itemised 5 and 3 year plans and annual detailed plans from more regular input. These are all subject to change, based on requirement, budget etc.

All equipment types have different refresh cycles and these are factored into the planning. This can also be reviewed in certain circumstances. As an example all fixed desktops are 5 years, mobile devices are 3. That's set in stone. However, for our server infrastructure, it is 5 year refresh, but reviewed at that point and if it still providing the service as required and a warranty can still be applied to it/not end of life/support etc. then it can be adjusted in the plan. Make sure everything is included. Sometimes cabling etc. is overlooked and while it could be a 25 year life cycle, that needs to be factored in, even if it's just shown on the overall financial forecasts. We have an overall financial plan that showed the cost of the investment over the duration. Also the financial plans included all staffing costs including on costs etc. At a glance you can see the cost of the ICT Service provision.

Don't forget training. Both technically for the department and CPD for staff. An awful lot of the time the actual team providing the service overlook factoring in keeping themselves current or at least making training available for themselves. Also though the training for staff is vital. You can have the best systems in place, but if they don't know how to use what they've got it doesn't matter.

Good luck with it :)

Dear fellow Edugeekers. I'm not ignoring you. Just had one of those awful days. Back in on Wednesday when I hope to oblige.

Could I have a look too please mate?

Thanks

Wow! My thread took off. I'm still reading as much as I can and working on my document(s). At the moment I'm writing it as two docs (executive summary and technical details) but I'm bundling them into one big word file so the executives can read the summary and skim the rest, but they can check the numbers if they want to.

We did a questionnaire last year, which I'm leaning on quite a bit, and I met with the science faculty a couple of weeks ago to discuss their needs. Once I have a first draft finished I'll take out all the sensitive bits and post it up here.

Good luck all!

I'd be quite interested in a copy to please if you don't mind - could come in handy in the near future with my new role!

Cheers.

Be fab if you could post a sanitised copy of your final version on here. I've got a Dell engineer coming to swap out a CMOS battery and hard drive on a SIMS server tomorrow plus as I have had today off a shed load of catch up - no doubt. If I get the opportunity I'll post up a copy of what I put together manly based on the superb documents made available by Andy? At Bishops Wordsworth in nearby Salisbury. Grateful thanks to Andy if I've got your name right. Your docs are a lifesaver.

Being honest, I would suggest a small group of you form a closed group on EduGeek and share all your stuff through there. once you have discussed for a month or two you should be able to produce a generic version with a few variations as options based on available technology or on specific targeted areas (e.g. literacy, numeracy, higher than average EAL/ESOL, etc.) and so on. It is best to do it as a small group to get a draft out for more generally consumption and feedback. Any more than 6-8 contributors and it becomes a committee.

It is a really worthwhile thing to do, to collaborate on something like this, and it is a wonderful feeling to see others make use of it, adapt it, invest their own time into it.

Speak to your schools about what you are doing as well, as this would count as peer review of your work and strategies. Persuade them to let the generic version go out under a Creative Commons licence with EduGeek as the official controller (standard attribution, non-commercial, international licence, perhaps). Unfortunately, you are unlikely to be able to make it share-alike as people will need to adapt it for their school and their school's strategy, but encouraging regular reviews, feedback and contributions will be a good thing.
