Teacher/Student Access To Task Manager

I am looking for your views...

 

Our computer science has requested for both himself and his computer science students to have access to task manager so they can see the usage information.

 

Do you have task manager blocked in your schools?

Would you allow it?

What would be the security implications if task manager was allowed?

I allow staff. No harm in them being able to see it. Students I don't!

Staff yes, students no. Depends what management applications you have running and if they can be canceled by end task. E.g vnc server or possibly av? Worth testing.

 

Do they need it for 1 lesson for demonstration or permanently? If it was for one lesson i wouldnt have a problem, permanently i would query reasons

Could give ability to end Anti-Virus Applications, Monitoring/Management solutions etc. etc.

Staff yes (though they dont really need it), Students no.

In the cases that a class has had a specific reason, a new username has been created excluded from the specific policy.

and then removed at the end of the lesson.

In theory if a user was just a user on that machine I doubt they would be able to stop very much unless its an application running as them so I see no reason why not to give them access but worth testing as a student in your environment.

yeah, i don't see why you would limit it, anything crucial runs outside of the users desktop environment..... worst they can do is close their own work. av and anything else run as system so can't be ended by the user

A GPO to allow only that classroom to gain access to task manager. If you're worried about them messing up the system, some software similar to deep freeze would be handy.

 

Personally, I would prefer to just look for some software that shows you the information needed but doesn't allow you to modify it.

No and no here; too many things that can be disabled and WOULD be disabled, staff and students alike.

For computer science, we use virtualbox VM's which are entirely unlimited and they can play around with them as much as they like whether its playing with task manager or fdisking the life out of them.
