Normally have to give our pdc server services a kick for it settle down.

speckytecky Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 We who inhabit Edugeek know that the updates aren't just released by Microsoft by fun but as a necessity to plug security holes. That said I suspect that many of us have a neigh on impossible task convincing those higher up the food chain. That's certainly my current problem. A problem not helped when the necessary updates seem to screw things up! My current problem is as with @MrFrostmaul our servers carry out scheduled critical and security updates and restarts through WSUS. Unfortunately the six year old 32 bit Standard Edition Server 2008 DC is now creaking and the 50 GB OS partition was fit for purpose when the server was set up but nowadays it's too small. In fact ours has less than 10% free space so sometimes it's hanging after restarts now. Unfortunately I have so far been unable to convince the management of the urgent need to replace it! 1
Blue_Cookeh Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Every Saturday at 3am with auto reboots, apart from our Hyper-V servers which I just do every couple of months when I notice a quiet time. Obviously randomly staggered via SCCM so that we don't end up with both DCs offline etc

pete Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 For the most part, usually the Thursday after Patch Tuesday after scouring the Internet for rumblings of problems. Out-of-band patches like the one coming out today ( ) get assessed and usually deployed quickly regardless of patch windows.

Sagima Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Quite a long time for most of them - the hyper-v and RemoteApp servers got updated in the summer half term. Quite possibly last summer for most of the rest. We are so busy it hasn't been worth the risk of having to do extra work we don't have time for if anything went wrong.

rich_tech Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) I generally look to update workstations and servers at the end of the month, our Hyper-V hosts get done a bit less frequently as they aren't on the net, I never ever go for Patch Tuesday's themselves, because you can unwittingly put a PC/Server killer onto them updating straight away, thankfully we dodged the .net date picker SIMS killer the other month on our curriculum network because of this as I was able to deny it from the workstations, whereas the county maintained machines needed to get that update uninstalled ASAP at the time. dapaulio Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) I hate doing WU on servers. it is the most boring job ever. it is the first thing I do every school holidays just to get it out the way. All servers are installed normally within a couple hours including all clustered HV nodes. i think people are very brave allowing auto restart on their essential servers Edited August 18, 2015 by dapaulio
PotNoodleTech Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 OK that group policy was created in 2005 and allows restart at 2am if needed on 206 servers in total (both domain controllers and member servers). I think the risk of not patching the servers for months on end is even greater than the risk of them crashing on a restart which is a very rare event IMHO.
newpersn Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 I can't trust our servers to restart on there own. We have to kick start dns on our main pdc until talks to the other dcs. I'm sure we have too many dcs.
nickbro Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I just my servers auto update by them selves, the only issue I have is with NPS on the PDC, just needs a service restart otherwise the WPA2 Wifi doesn't work, never figured that one out.
