Watched the first episode of ONE PIECE last night and enjoyed it quite a lot.

Just finished "Painkiller" on Netflix. If you ever wondered what would happen if managed to licence morphine and hand it out like Nurofen, this will answer it. Spoiler: it was a disaster.. Greed and hubris backed up by relentless marketing led Oxycontin to kill thousands. The Sackler family pretty much got away with it. Bit of a slow start but I thought it told the story pretty well.

First two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 have appeared on P+ (No longer on Prime... boo) and by crickey the first one is a blinder. Absolutely fantastic.

I finished season 2 of Foundation last week, and was very impressed. I can't wait for season 3 (it's already written apparently), but until the writers/actors strike is over they won't be announcing details of a renewal.

Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) are happily married - until Liv makes a discovery and their life together takes an unexpected turn.

 

Not the best I've ever seen, but it was, yeah, OK.

 

We were able to watch all the episodes without interruption from adverts, which won't be possible in the future, apparently:

Re Wilderness, like many series I see advertised, I probably would have watched it as a movie or maybe a two/three episode special but 6+ episodes? Too long. Also, who would cheat on Jenna Coleman?

 

Re Ads, they're nearly all at it unless you pay a premium and/or you have to pay a premium for 4k. Seems like a hugely retrograde step to me, but I'm not a corporate bean counter. There's way more stuff that I'd like to see and just don't have the time for so I'd rather have less content (=lower costs) than pay to watch ads. Plus won't it push people to "ad free" sources meaning even less money coming in?

Possibly "Not Dead Yet" on Disney. Only one season at present. Not a "must see", but pleasant enough.

Do you find yourself saying 'See you' or 'sneak attack' at random times during the day - or have I just been watching too much Kim's Convenience?

Not 20 minutes, but we've finally got round to starting Only Murders in the Building. Definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

We finished watching that last week, it was 'ok' but could have been a lot better I feel.

We are now watching Love and Death on the ITVX player and it's quite good. It's based on a true story and we are only two episodes in (it's a slow burn) but it's really kind of compelling and the characters and situation are being setup wonderfully.

Another more "<30 minutes" than 20, but I saw the first episode of Still Up on Apple last night and quite enjoyed it. Two insomniac friends, one of whom is agoraphobic help each other through the sleepless nights, so far by phone. Stars Antonia Thomas (Misfits, Sunshine On Leith), Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Blake Harrison (Inbetweeners).

Just finished the first 2 seasons of Upload on Prime (somehow I missed it when it first came out but they were advertising the upcoming 3rd season). Turned out be a rather interesting tech thriller/conspiracy story masquerading as a light-hearted comely.

Oh is season 3 out soon? I flicked this on once and enjoyed more than I thought. Been a while since I watches season 2 though.

 

I’m currently really into Star Trek: strange new worlds. Never been a Trekkie but did watch the Next Generation all the way through a couple of years ago. Since then enjoyed Picard and loved discovery. Strange new worlds is the best yet for me (awaits hard core Trekkies telling me I’m wrong)

 

I think SNW is the best of the new Treks, overall. The cast is stellar, they seem to have good chemistry and overall the writing has been good. They're not afraid to be silly (See 'These Old Scientists', 'Subspace Rhapsody') but they have had some powerful dramatic turns too. It's been really good and I hope it continues for a long time.

 

Picard had a very strong Season 3 but even that was marred in places; making the Borg the big bad again was a mistake; they should have stuck with the Dominion. Seasons 1 and 2 were a lot weaker, they had their moments but I don't think I'd bother rewatching them. I liked some of Discovery, but I found the last season a real slog and almost didn't make it through. I love Lower Decks but it's very much for the fans and anyone who isn't versed in the lore won't get the references in it. Prodigy was surprisingly good as well; it's criminal that the second season was prevented from being released on P+ and that the first one was taken off.

 

Favourite trek is still DS9.

Two men trick their way into the house of a wealthy family and proceed to terrorise its three inhabitants. Meanwhile Detective Jack Caffrey, on leave after ordering an illegal search of the house of his neighbour - who he believes kidnapped and killed his brother when they were young - returns to his old stomping grounds in Wales and discovers that the wrong man may have been imprisoned for a gruesome crime five years earlier.

 

This is mainly based on the seventh (and last as the author passed away) book in a series, with elements from earlier ones. Seems an odd place to start, but maybe they want to work up to the first (and best of the four I have read) as, while this case is closed, there is an obvious sequel hook.

 

The bad: "Written and created by Megan Gallagher" is similar to the LoTR films having a credit "Written and created by Peter Jackson". Some of the acting seems pretty bad, but isn't (will make sense if you watch the show). Ukweli Roach seems way too nice to play the lead and, given his character's predilection for spending every night sat on a chair glaring at his evil neighbour's house, you wonder how he managed to form a relationship - even with someone as nutty as she turns out to be. I was a bit unclear as to how Jack seems to have jurisdiction in London and Wales. It's also one of those that has you questioning how much sense it makes the next morning.

 

However all this is outweighed by the way that, after a so-so start, things start gathering pace and twists start coming at you around half way through up to the finale. I really enjoyed it and hope they go on to do more. Not as good as the Dutch version of Book 2, but well worth a look.

Dracula (the recent BBC version that's on Netflix).

 

Saw the first ep ages ages ago and wasn't hugely impressed, while Mme LeMarchand didn't want to watch any more. She was away last week, so I watched the remaining two eps. The first 2 were OK, mainly due to Dolly Wells as a smart, tough nun. Claes Bang was pretty good as Dracula, though something about his accent was a bit off... and then it struck me that he was a bit like David Walliams. After that there was no recovery, especially as the last ep started well but then rushed through the plot. It seemed at times that this is what they wanted to make a show of, but were told they had to do it in one episode. Mina came across as vapid rather than fearless and about the only good things were the Easter Eggs like Dolly Wells doing a Peter Cushing table dash to the curtains and the number of her hospital room.

 

If a revisionist Dracula tale is what you want, read Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula". Why hasn't that been filmed?

Finished National Treasure: Edge of History. Tolerably entertaining, but pretty disposable and too teen-orientated for my liking.
