Recently finished The 4400. Mme LeMarchand gave up on this towards the end of Season 2, but I discovered at Xmas that it's a great show to watch "in the background" as you don't need to concentrate too hard and it's not so good that you want to watch every second. Anyway, it does actually get an "ending", though it's fairly open-ended and you never really get a decent explanation of what the two factions really had planned.

 

Also Season 1 of My Life Is Murder. It's an Australian/NZ co-production with S1 set in Melbourne, which they make look very pretty, and S2 in Auckland. Lucy Lawless plays an acerbic widowed ex-cop who takes on cold cases for the police. One of Mme LeMarchand's picks, this is watchable but not a classic.

I saw the first ep and, while I have always had something better to watch since, I didn't think "no more of that". Mind you, I'm not a fan of the JC version.

Been watching Warrior Nun recently - currently approaching the end of series 2

 

Absolute rubbish

 

all the normal fantasy problems

Women fighting trained fighting men and winning every time

People fighting trained warrior (male or female) by approaching to punching distance - then after you find out that they had a gun tucked into their belt and could have taken them out

Guns with unlimited ammunition

 

varying power from "magical devices" depending on what is needed at the time

 

trained female warriors wearing sexy outfits despite the outfit hindering their ability to function

 

the vast majority of the women are young - pretty much all the men are older and "wiser" (just come across a few good looking men but up to then there were not many)

 

very diverse cast - but the "wise" people all tend to be white

 

Oh - and - an IT expert who can hack into "the enemy"'s computer systems at the press of a button and /or by causing many lines of "code" to flash across the screen (they really should have Jeff Goldbloom in this role - if only he was female and young)

 

 

Still - characters are not too bad and I am enjoying it

Not surprising - it has all the usual stuff that generates fans from the target audience

 

I have been watching it on my laptop as Mrs mikeprice can;t abide stuff like that

and - lets face it - it does make James Bond look like a serious documentary in terms of likelyhood!!!

Carnival Row Season 2 on Amazon Prime.I don't know if it was because I knew it was cancelled, but I wasn't as enamoured of it as I was with the first season.

 

The good news: There is a conclusion, though it's one of those that leaves things open enough for more if someone decided they have bigger pockets than Jeff Bezos. Talking of him, did he mandate the "Communism is Bad" plot that is hammered through most of the season? Ironically, when one of the characters extols the Capitalist system, it's one who revealed that their wealth came from doing bad things and, despite their "wealth being shared out doesn't work if it's not earned" line, they spend a lot of time with someone whose wealth is inherited,

 

The bad: Lots of characters make decisions that seem purely there to further the plot, and plot points are ended way too quickly or suddenly surface with no reason apart to get to "the end".

 

The above makes it sound as if I hated the season; I didn't, there was still lots to enjoy but it felt like it could have been so much better had it had more time. Apparently they'd filmed 8 eps and then were given 2 more to wrap up, but that still doesn't explain the rushed feeling of earlier eps.

 

 

Citadel on also Amazon Prime. First 2 eps were OK but, apart from higher production values and the swearing, it could have been made in the 80s. Lord knows where the $300 million went, as some of the FX looked quite shonky. Still, at least it's given Dot from Miss Fisher some employment and the first ep did use "Driver's Seat" by Sniff and the Tears to close. I did wander why they were touring - I guess they're hoping it might spark some interest. (OT: Though the single did OKish worldwide and has had a couple of resurgences after being used in an advert and again when it was featured in "Boogie Nights", it never did that well here in their homeland. They managed to get a lot of airplay leading up to release, but pressing plant problems meant the disk didn't come out in time to benefit).

 

Slightly more on topic:

 

 

1. Why do streaming channels make it so hard to watch the credits? If you don't grab the remote and find the right key quickly enough, you're stuck with fast-forwarding through the whole show and hoping you don't go too far.
   
2. Amazon Prime picture settings. After setting up my TV so Carnival Row was looking great, Citadel looked awful but I C(ouldn't)BA to make the requisite changes. I've not noticed this on other streamers.

mind you - I can be like that - Mrs mikeprice gets really annoyed when a film comes up that we have watched before

still - means I can watch the same film 3-4 times and enjoy it every time!!!

maybe I got stopped - it was Prime and I know my membership stopped without notice at one point - so that might be why

Watched the first couple of episodes of Halo on a flight last week. Now watching the series. I’m really into it - having never played the games (I’m not a gamer - well not anything after the 90’s anyway).

Has anyone else watched Marcella? I've now finished it and S3 was incredibly dark and disturbing - well, all of it but especially S3.

I guess "The Nevers" was doomed when Joss Whedon fell from grace, which is a shame as while it wasn't the greatest show ever, it had promise. Finally managed to see the last few episodes (why release it at all if it's going to be so difficult to see?) and initially wished I watched a decent "catch up" but I was back into it after the second episode. If anyone is interested, but afraid that there is no conclusion, it is very like the end of a novel in a series. There is a definite end with many plot lines ties up but there is equally a path that the next season would have taken visible.

 

Worth tracking down if you enjoyed the first 6 eps, but I feel that Amalia shouldn't have been made so brusque/mono-minded, the whole time-travel stuff should have been dropped or at least left until a later season, and people's (and alien's) motivations should have been made clearer. That said, the last couple of eps make you cheer at points while let's just say you may find your hay fever flaring up at others.

You could tell the Never's part 2 was a different creative lead. I found that, while good, it lacked the charm of the first half.

I want to, but Mme LeMarchand is having a lot of family problems at the moment (one very ill elderly, one pretending to be very ill elderly and more) and is wanting more "positive" shows. I don't think that's "Silo". I may have to watch that one on my own!

After seeing clips of it on line, I've been giving Mr. Inbetween a go. It's an Australian comedy/drama about a criminal for hire who has to balance that with his home life. It's on Disney+

 

From what I've seen of it, it's pretty good. Darkly humorous but also violent in places.

We have just finished the box set. 5Foot2 was watching this before our move. However, she stopped watching because "it was too creepy" to watch alone. She asked if I would watch it with her today.
