Dos_Box Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) I've just received an email from Virgin Media informing me that between January and March we've used 507GB in data. Yes, we have a Roku and watch Netflix and Crunchyroll all the time and my kids love watching Minecraft and other gameing vids on YouTube, but this seems to be a HUGE amount considering I don't do online gaming. Admittedly, we don't get charged for it, but it does seem excessive (for my house). Do you have any idea of your data useage at home? I've a sneaking suspicion that compared to many here I'm a lightweight! Edited June 17, 2015 by Dos_Box
andydis Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I'd say its about right for the Tech-savvy household.
Arthur Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Do you have any idea of your data usage at home? I have downloaded 851 GB over the last three months. That figure would be a bit higher if I hadn't switched ISPs towards the end of March. I wouldn't say 507 GB was particularly high. http://vgy.me/HaYd0o.png
LeMarchand Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Mine was 162GB. No streaming, though. Feeling quite relieved as I thought it might be high enough to draw attention!
fiza Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Do you have any idea of your data useage at home? Unfortunately the BT website wont tell as I have Unlimited Broadband it says "I don't need to worry about it". I would love to know how much we use. With 3 teenagers constantly using spotify, Netflix and Sky On Demand its got to be a good amount!
SteveM555 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I also can't see mine... but in our house someone is always streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer.. Added to that Steam game updates and downloading new games at 25GB a time seems to be the norm!
yugo Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 BT seem to have taken away the facility for checking usage because I have an unlimited package
localzuk Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 On my own, at my last house, I was hitting 200GB per month. I'm now in a house with 2 other avid video streamers, so that's easily going to be 300GB per month for us. So 507GB over several months isn't much really!
pooley Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I'd say for a tech savvy and well connected household your about average. Smart tv, Roku and chromecasts here along with Neflix, on demand streaming and some not 100% legal downloads I top out at over 500gb a month normally.
DCUK6 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Not seen if ive had a letter but using this calculator Estimate your Usage | Northwestel They reckon 105GB per month for just me in the evening with just netflix and youtube.

tmcd35 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Is there a place on the VM website that'll give me this info? Can't find it. I do a lot of streaming, in fact all my TV content is streamed now - YouTube, Netflex, iPlayer. Some downloading on and off when the mood takes but mostly wait for whatever it is to appear on Netflex.
plexer Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Yeah was a pain when BT took that away. I'm on plusnet and around 120'is GB for us and we watch a lot of on demand sky and other streaming stuff. Ben
CAM Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Brother permanently has Twitch streams on so that's already huge usage. Add a Steam sale and I'm surprised Virgin even keep us connected... No P2P though!

That site comes up with about 40Gb per month for me. Seems a little low. Edit: scrap that, another play with the sliders says 130Gb per month, that seem more realistic! Edited June 12, 2015 by tmcd35
caffrey Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I got one on the wall from last year, between May and July and I did 3117GB

halbaradkenafin Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Haven't checked mine in a while but I wouldn't be surprised if we're around 120GB+ per month, it's dropped recently as a flat mate moved out and he used to watch a lot of youtube and other video streaming.
JRowley Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I'm with Sky and have their Unlimited Fibre package, as a result they don't track my usage because I don't need to worry about it, it's a shame because I've always been curious about it.
3s-gtech Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 On my lovely 2.5mbps connection I still get through a fair bit. It's mostly Windows Updates though judging from the last couple of months.

Just because they don't tell you what you've used doesn't mean they aren't tracking it. I'd be highly surprised if it's not part of various metrics they need to report on, especially for the marketing side when planning upcoming sales campaigns.
