LeMarchand Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 It's not just you. Whilst each to their own etc etc, I'm surprised that they ever got popular and more surprised that they are still talked about. I figured they'd be one of those bands that were achingly hip for a year and then slipped back into "only popular amongst people who actually like the music" mode.

They managed to become one of the bigger bands in the world playing a rather depressing brand of folk. There must be something in that. However, my Nu-folk loving ears are struggling to find much to enjoy on the new album it has to be said. 1

DaveAngel Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I enjoyed their 1st album thought the 2nd was much of the same sort of thing but I think the fact that they are trying something different is a good thing, it would be way to easy to go lets just keep trotting out those banjo heavy folk songs and rack in some more cash, but to evolve as a band shows creativity! but that's just my opinion.

Sounds a bit like the Editors in that regard. The first two albums were similar in terms of sound and the band got to the point where they couldn't do that any more so went off in a completely different direction for their third album. It was a misfire in my opinion but I'd rather see a band misfiring by trying something new rather than producing the same record over and over. 1

I didn't realise there were so many covers of that kicking around. The Old Crow Medicine Show original is, IMO better but then I like OCMS much more than I like M&S.

I wasn't so keen on OCMS' version when it came out. I think it was all the de rigueur semi-clad women they used in the video. Instantly ruins any musical credibility, but it grew on me the more I heard it and the less I saw the video. In actual fact, the version I like best was the one I heard from the two guys and two girls in the tent opposite mine at Cambridge last year. That's the one I hear in my head when I sing it to myself, as one does.

I kind of like it - it has ... style. OCMS seem to have an almost permanent slot in the car CD player for the times when Radio 4 is not to my taste. OK, they share it with Anais Mitchell who's last album Xoa is getting well worn.

Heh! I've had a while to get used to the idea. It's probably detrimental to the longevity of the music for me, some Anais Mitchell tracks will now be programmed with the associations of this time and the events that feature so large. In a few years I'll hover over the CD for a moment and then pass on by to something with more pleasant memories. Either that or I will just end up at Zappa.
