Dos_Box Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Well, we've had plenty of talk about what new tech you are all getting in this this year but we never talk about what old tech you are stripping out, which, with hindsight is quite an important thing too. So what is it you are going to say goodbye to this year? Old networking equipment, storage, PC's and laptops which are now too small or slow to keep up or projectors? If you are retiring old kit this year please let us all know what it is here Also, if you could let us all know the spec of the equipment too it would me helpful for others to gauge this against their own setups.

FN-GM Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 One of our Primary Schools is having a switch and wireless replacement at Easter. All laptops to be changed before summer and in the new Financial year (September) all the IWB's with LCD screens. The others are pretty upto date.

Our remaining non ultra-short through interactive projectors/smartboards. Our remaining 9 year old Celeron desktop PCs (currently running as thin clients). Hopefully, a bunch of our laser printers (hope to replace with HP OfficeJet Pro X models).

sonofsanta Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I was hoping to be rid of the last hard drive in a desktop machine, and the last Core2 machine with them, but the changes to TAP may leave me just short of that target. Hopefully I can manage the full SSD target still - I might buy a handful fewer new machines and spend the money on completing the SSD roll out, actually. Draft N wireless points, to be replaced with a proper quantity of AC Unifi points. And later in the year, the Oki laser printers whose contract is up; with any luck we'll swap for the Officejet Pro X printers as well @localzuk, if I can convince higher ups. They're cheapest option to run, have a very tidy consumables system (4 inks that are solid metal rectangles you click into place like an SD card, couldn't be easier unless they recharged themselves from dust or something), are incredibly fast in Draft mode - and quite frankly, draft quality is more than good enough for the majority of printing. Side-by-side with a laser print you can tell it's come from an inkjet, but on its own merits the print quality is more than good enough. Colour images have more resolution & detail as well - our lasers compress the blacks, although the colour balance seems a bit off, so it's six of one and half-a-dozen of t'other. I'll write some fuller impressions up in due course, but I'm very impressed so far given all the benefits.

We will be getting rid of 90 Core 2 PC's (variety of manufacturers), 1Gb Ram, 40Gb HDD. Hopefully, all our existing switches will be removed (with the exception of a handful) :-) fingers crossed the money is confirmed soon!

Joanne Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Replacing ActivBoard 378's with CleverTouch boards I want to replace a bank of laptops (Toshiba satellite pro C660's) with either LearnPads or generic laptops... i3's, 4GB RAM. Also replacing my work machine (Lenovo Think Centre Edge 71) with something BETTER. Might do a self build.

Duranis Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) Just replaced what was supposed to be 10 teacher laptops (there was only 4 in the trolley, no idea where the rest went). These where old single core celerons that where replaced with some 4th gen i3 dell's (I wanted to go for i5 tablets which were roughly the same price but the dell's where bought without consulting me). Have 60 of the classmate 2 in 1 hybrids coming from Very PC after Easter for the kids which I'm looking forward to. These are going to run alongside the slightly aging RM mobile one 300 laptops in the short term, all being well they will replace them in the long term. I have to admit to being a bit of a hoarder and not wanting to throw anything away. I have about 40 single core celeron laptops here which I have been trying to find a good use for. I was thinking of speaking to the site manager to see if we can make some nice boxes for them to go in classroom windows as digital signage for each class then chuck some lite version of linux and open office on the rest and send them to the local church as they have a "computer group" for the older folks (and we are a COE school). I really want to ditch the whole wireless system (dlink controller and AP's) as it is not the most stable of systems (AP's regularly falling off the controller and the controller itself falling over). However it wasn't put in that long before I started here last year and I don't think I would be able to justify replacing it again just yet (especially as they got seriously ripped off on pricing). sparkeh Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Mechanical hard drives in our desktops. Hopefully they will all be SSD soon. Possibly moving to VoIP - though there are so many fingers in the project pie that it might just grind to an administrative halt, which would be a shame.
