Apple TV's have names with brackets after - why?

Over half term we updated all our ATV's to the latest software version - some required a reset in order to update, we now have many ATV's with brackets after their names.

 

See attached.

 

In order to solve issues with ATV's not consistently appearing on the AirPlay mirroring list we've had to turn the SSID broadcast to ON.....

Hi,

 

We have the same "issue" here. It's related to DNS on your network. Clear your dns cache on your server or allocate a fix IP address to your apple TV and You won't have this issue anymore. I don't think it's a big deal because the ATV works :)

We have reserved the AppleTV's their IP addresses in DHCP so they always get the same one....but until we made the SSID visible we were still having issues...

I think this AppleTV naming issue is an iOS8 / latest AppleTV OS issue - all our AppleTVs are on static addresses, but even having cleared DNS caches, we are getting the AppleTV (2) issues.

I noticed this happening to ours since I updated them last week too.

 

We've been advised to raise a support call direct with Apple to put some pressure on them to resolve this; MERU themselves also have several tickets open with Apple too.

 

I suggest anyone with this issue contacts Apple for a resolution ASAP!

Does the bluetooth ad-hoc broadcast its own name for airplay? This would explain why your get (2) in the name if both broadcasted names are the same for Network and Bluetooth.

Apple UK support won't add this to your case. Got told to reboot the router, but said I didn't want to do that as it would disrupt too many people. Told to put Apple TV onto a different network, eg. take it home, to see if it would work. I have now (I think) flushed DNS cache to see if that will temporarily fix this. Very fed up. Apple UK support: if you search the web for this issue you will see how many have this issue! Please do something about it!

 

And because I can't edit my last post: this issue for us is that we can only connect to one Apple TV. It's name is appearing in AirPlay on the iPad as Ground1 (3). We have three Apple TVs and they all have separate names. Configured with Configurator, all on same wifi network and able to connect to the internet. I think AirPlay is picking up three devices but all listed as name of one device (hence the (3) after the name). Can't connect to the other two as their names aren't appearing. They were all working fine previously, until updates went out.

oh and we've since turned SERVICE CONTROL OFF on our meru controller on the advice of a meru engineer as our apple tv's and ipads are on the same vLAN...

 

it's not made any difference to the brackets however....

Apple Support have requested from us our network setup but believe the issue is to do with Bonjour...!

 

Thanks for that. It's the same sort of thing happening here too, and we have an Enterasys wireless network. We only have three Apple TVs, but we get dropping off and the brackets issue.

 

I assume from the rest of your post that you have sent the video to Apple support. We are having a visit from KRCS, who sold us the Apple kit, in a few weeks time and I will be showing them what is happening too if it is not resolved by then. If I get time I may try and do a video myself to send to Apple support.

APPLE have just phoned to ask me to try putting some of our ATV's on a static IP address -- they claim this will solve the issue immediately!

 

I'll update tomorrow after some testing...

I doubt it will fix it as all our Apple TV's have always had static IP's and we had this issue. I just went round to each one and just renamed them all and its not come back since.

Renamed them to something else - or renamed them to something random - then renamed them back to what they need to be?

Been through this before, I was told it was to do with Bonjour. Happens at home too. Gave up looking, static, wired, wifi single band etc didn't fix it. If you put a space at the end of the name it stops it happening for some reason.

Have just done some more tests on the iPads and Apple TVs and AirPlay. The following was discovered:

 

1. All three Apple TVs are on 7.2 software version.

2. iPads on iOS 8.3 no longer get AirPlay.

3. iPhone on iOS 8.3 gets AirPlay.

4. iPads on older iOS get AirPlay.

5. iPads that get AirPlay can see all of the three TVs, but they all have brackets with numbers after their name.

6. Of the three Apple TVs, one is dropping out intermittently every few seconds.

7. The two stable Apple TVs can do mirroring fine.

8. For info, all Apple TVs purchased at the same time and set up using Configurator with the same profile.

 

I am going to try and refresh the unstable Apple TV in Configurator. I've now got to avoid updating any more iPads to 8.3. The "discoveryd" article referenced by @psydii looks like it shows there is a real instability in OS from Apple. I don't have much faith in the Apple Support guys, as if you look at their own forums there are folks with these same issues not being fixed or being told to try stuff that would be difficult with 60+ iPads. Not happy! Will show KRCS guy what is happening when he comes and request he takes it up with Apple for us.
