Arreks Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 there's one solution.... come to the dark side Oh believe me, I do love meat! My OH is a veggie though so all of our meals together are veggie
Joanne Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I'd be slamming a steak in the grill to go with said veggie option! Hahahah.

unixman_again Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Cooking veggie stuff is a nightmare! it's also really hard to not just add quorn or tofu etc to make something easy! I'm a veggie and I've never felt the need to add quorn or tofu to anything. I've never had a nut cutlet either. I just eat fruit and vegetables. They are plenty of different types and lots of ways to cook them.

Those are in no way healthy!! Fructose is a sugar like anything else. Its all marketing.
Patrick Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 Phwooarr. my best for alternating shoulder press is only 30kg dumbbells, and THAT was fairly fresh and full of Grenade PWO. Not bad at all there! Also strong progress going on in this thread! Nice work everyone. I've still got my shoulder groaning away (weekend of gardening and car-ing) so nothing upper body wise for me this week as I REALLY want to get to Muay Thai on Friday for sparring. Will see how that is next week. Weighed myself last night and down from about 95kg a few weeks back to 89.7kg! I did NOT think I had that much to lose but getting some ab definition back. Ho hum, if I have to drop right down to 85kg to be super-lean then I will. It's KILLING me not doing weights and waiting on this shoulder. Abs and legs and cardio is getting dull. Feel your pain with shoulders. My standing OHP is 45kg for 5 reps inc the bar. And i tend to swing a bit with it. My shoulders are by far my weakest group and have always lagged behind. On a plus note, since MA my tricep strength has gone up oddly and i'm now blasting out dips nicely and might even try weighted dips soon. Current BW is 75kg.
witch Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I'm a veggie and I've never felt the need to add quorn or tofu to anything. I've never had a nut cutlet either. I just eat fruit and vegetables. They are plenty of different types and lots of ways to cook them. I don't like most cheeses - especially Goat's cheese which every restaurant seems to think is a veggie's favourite. I am allergic to garlic and so hummus is out. Can't stand tofu either! Where do you get your protein from then? Mine is eggs and nuts, mostly. Gets dull though
unixman_again Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I get my protein from eggs, milk and cheese. I love cheese and the pongier the better! I drink a lot of milk, a litre+ a day. Some people drink pop - I drink milk.
Xeba37 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Yes, fructose is sugar, however it is being consumed in its natural form, i.e. with the fibre etc of the whole fruit - this makes a huge difference to how your body processes it. The fruits and nuts are chopped and cold pressed so you get everything you would get from eating 3 or 4 dates and a few raisins and a few cashew nuts, nothing bad there. Anyone who is educated in nutrition knows that too much fruit is a bad thing, if I ate 5 packs a day, yes I would be consuming too much sugar (and would also likely have a bad time in the bathroom)- it would be bad for me, but eating these in moderation is healthy. Balanced is the key, as I said...healthy 'treat'.

Thanks buddy Shoulders are a strength for me. Shoulder gaiinnnnnzzzz have always come comparatively easy for me, and it helps that it's one of my favourite bodyparts to train. On the other side of the spectrum, my lats are poor! Really struggle to get stronger on lat pulls, pull ups etc. Rows & shrugs (i.e. Traps, Rhomboids) are fine but my lats suck. 5 pullups are all i can really manage at the minute and even that ruins me. I feel for you though, i'd hate to be off the gym. It's the highlight of my day! Ohhhhhhhhh also, check these out: 20g Protein Yoghurts. Tried one today and they're actually pretty nice; like a big Pettis Filous. Only £1 at the minute too.
Patrick Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 I'm don't like cheese, do they taste cheesy or just like a nice flavored yogurt?
Miscbrah Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Where do you get your protein from then? http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41u24jKJeGL._SY300_.jpg Actually mostly from food (hear it's best to) but convenient as hell to knock up a dirty shake now and then.
MrMat Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Sometimes there was a slight cheesy taste to it but not nearly as bad as i was expecting. I will eat Mild Cheddar but besides that, i'm not a fan of cheese either. 1

unixman_again Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 On the other side of the spectrum, my lats are poor! Really struggle to get stronger on lat pulls, pull ups etc. Since pull ups are my absolute favourite exercise, I'll chirp in and give you some tips, which have helped me. Don't grip the bar too hard - you only need to hold tight enough to stay on, not cause cramps in the forearms and hands Look where you're going - sight the bar as you go up Maintain the 'tonic' - squeeze that butt, pull in that stomach, keep the legs tight - it's much easier to lift something that's rigid Work through the full range of motion, from straight arms to the top. Ideally you want your sternum to touch the bar. Don't go from a dead hang. At the bottom you should be able to balance a wine glass on each shoulder. This give you somewhere to go, as sometimes it is easier to go down before you pull up. Mix your sets up. I like to just churn out the reps, but when start to lose ground (like at the mo), I'll do 1 pullup, count to 10, do 2 pullups, count to 10, etc until I can't complete the last number. I'll then keep going until I've completed that number and then start my timed rest (75 secs) or go off and do some dips. Since the final rep is the hardest, do that first to get it out of the way and then it all becomes easy
Joanne Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 (edited) @MrMat if you want epic lats get on with the DEADLIFTS!! Mine are pretty ridiculous... I get my protein from theproteinworks.com (If you want a free bag of protein with your order click here: http://www.theproteinworks.com/referral-program/MTAwMTg2ajJ0/ ) I highly recommend the Cherry Bakewell, Caramel Macchiato and Lemon Meringue Pie... oh and chocolate mint chip.... Patrick Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 I deadlift, i do bent over rows, and DB rows and pull ups (not very well). I can honestly say, since starting martial arts training, i've been making all KINDZ OF GAINZ in my lats. Kicking and punching really activates your lats and i'm feeling Doms in my lats for the first time in months. Feels good mang.
Miscbrah Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Seeing as we're on the subject (and in case anyone reading this is thinking of getting started and making ALL KINDS OF GAINS) I'm getting back to deadlifts. Yes I know my shoulder is hosed and I have a dodgy hip BUT it's all about coping with them SUPER light and SUPER strict form for a couple of sets. @ all the lifters itt, how is your deadlift form? What weight can you do 2s up 2s down for 8 reps with? What tutorials (if any) did you use to nail the form or what advice did you take on it? What info 'clicked' for you so that your back didn't visit snap city first time? My fave was probably plus keeping eyes forward on horizon level, head up, shoulders back but not packed too much, go for concave spine and tight core and push through heels only. Having seen numerous videos with alternate grip I've been working on this too, and actually not as weird as I remember it. Really not feeling the thrust forward with hips thing though, maybe I just 'do' that.
Miscbrah Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 You ever buy from myprotein.co.uk? I find it to be a pretty cheap source. Oh missed that! Erm, no I didn't. Funds a bit tight this month so on the eBay budget dirt protein. Ta for pointer though brah.
Joanne Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I do whatever my PT tells me in terms of deadlift. Always straight back and head neutral with spine, so keeping your head up helps slightly. Before lifting, tighten core and glutes and have feet as if you are pushing outwards (creates torque or something). I read a book about 'Becoming a supple leopard' and got tips from that. PM me for more info... 1

I shall give it a go Recently I've started focusing much more on the eccentric phase and trying to take as long as i can to come back down from the bar. Certainly will try that counting thingy! @MrMat if you want epic lats get on with the DEADLIFTS!! Mine are pretty ridiculous... Yeahh i do need to start including more Deadlifts back into my workouts. I've had a bit of time off them recently so i could concentrate on the other lifts etc but i think it's time to throw them back in
unixman_again Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 @MrMat if you want epic lats get on with the DEADLIFTS!! Mine are pretty ridiculous...I'm surprised by that. When I deadlift, I only feel it in my quads and lower back.
MrMat Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 I'm surprised by that. When I deadlift, I only feel it in my quads and lower back. Yeah you'll feel it more in your quads and lower back as they're the main muscles that are performing the lift i.e. they're the muscle groups that will be contracting to pull the weight. However, your lats, traps and shoulders will also be engaged as they'll be stopping your shoulders from coming forward/down and stopping your arms from falling off. 1
