Joanne Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I've officially started a powerlifting club.... I went with the grand title of "Burnley PLC" so original. There have been a couple of women at the gym who have entered a novice comp in August and they have been messaging me about it. You need three people to start a club, so voila!! I have 4 members now though
Patrick Posted May 19, 2015 Author Posted May 19, 2015 Sounds good! I'm focusing a bit more on my kick boxing / jujitsu at the moment. Still lifting but not pushing like crazy everyday to add weight to the bar every week. I wanna get fast. I wanna get so fast that when i turn out my bedroom light i'll be in bed before the rooms dark. 1
unixman_again Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 These are good I have these antares rollers and they are indeed grand. I got mine on ebay as shop marked for £40 including postage. It's a matter of keeping your eyes peeled. If you get some and want to add resistance, there are a few ways to do it : add cardboard vanes to the front wheel to turn it into a fan (this is what I do) let your tyres down a bit fold up a towel and put it under the rear roller This Minoura Mag Unit supposedly fits try and find one of these Tacx Speedmatic Resistance Unit for Antares Rollers (good luck!) This supposedly fits http://www.amazon.com/Kreitler-Killer-Add-On-Headwind-Fan/dp/B001C6BDOI
witch Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Went to the gym on my own yesterday - I do have one PT session left but it isn't till next week so I thought I'd try and do something until then. Did OK - couldn't remember all the exercises and there was a fire drill in the middle but at least I went
Joanne Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I did squats yesterday.... can't walk too good today!!! Made up for the biscuits I ate at a local tech meet though!
Tesla Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I'm yo yo ing about what to do atm , let alone yo yo ing on my weight loss! I have gone from thinking of cancelling gym, and now deciding to try and use half term to get into some sort of rhythm with Gym, and then go after work when we are back. argh.
Joanne Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Is it close to work or home? My gym is round the corner from work, so it's really easy to go afterwards and then go home. We have an INSET day on friday so I'm gonna try and cycle to work!!! That could be worth a laugh!
Tesla Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 close to work, but it gets extremely busy after 5 o clock...
Joanne Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Yeah mine does too... just gotta grin and bear it. Headphones on, music up, ignore the rest!
halbaradkenafin Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I've been slowly working up towards the couch25k base line and making good progress over the last few weeks and planning on starting the proper routine later this week to see if I can do it. I'm also going to be starting some martial art, not sure which yet but there are lots of options available for me in the area so just going to try them all out and see which one I like most, first up is Capoeira this week and Karate next week. I've heard good things about capoeira so that should be fun (though exhausting) and I haven't done Karate in about 20 years, though when I think about it more of it comes back to me so that should be easy enough to pick up again.
ButterflyMoon Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I am not a member of a gym or anything but I do walk miles. I think over the weekend I must have done 18 miles then also went on my bike for 5.5 miles. I just love being outside to be honest. 1
Xeba37 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Anyone got any tips for tight hamstrings, any activities that are useful for loosening them up? I have taken up Yoga again (about 3/4 months ago) to try and stretch them out for a couple of minutes a day, as well as pilates (which I have been doing forever). I am also stretching them out daily but have only managed to get about 1cm of extra movement in that time and no alleviation of symptoms. It wouldn't normally bother me that much but if I walk more than about 5 miles I get back ache in my lower back which I think is to do with the hamstring tightness.
Joanne Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I use a stretchy band at the gym to stretch my hammies. Lie on your back, loop the band round our foot. Bring leg up 90* (or as far as you can) and pull on the band.

I cannot get my straight leg to 90 degrees even when the other leg is bent, it is probably about 60 degrees. From what I have read on the internet I think this stretch is only effective if you can actually get it to that position in the first place (which most people can). With the leg I am not stretching straight, I can only get to about 45 degrees if that
Joanne Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Ahhh ok... have you tried some light weight stiff legged deadlifts? 1
Xeba37 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I deadlift light weight in body pump but perhaps that is not enough to do much for the hamstrings because it is mixed up with dead rows and clean and press etc. I might have a cheeky nip into the gym after a class and do some of these to see if it helps - knowing my luck the weights will probably make my arms longer instead of stretching the hamstrings haha.

I have tight Achilles and the only thing that worked at all for me was deep tissue massage - the sports masseur said it works for tight hamstrings too. They are still too short but there is a definite improvement
witch Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Fix Tight Muscles and Decrease Your Risk for Injury | Men's Health This looks interesting as it targets the hamstrings a completely new way. I also read that if you do "foldovers" while sitting up, this is a good one but you must do it very slowly and controlled otherwise the hamstring tries to shorten more 1
unixman_again Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 As far as I'm concerned, there is only one exercise for flexibility, and that is regular ballet classes. Well it helps me. Here's a pretty good stretching resource Stretching and Flexibility I have seen this as a reference in several stretching books. If only Mr Appleton had included some pictures. If you want to spend a small amount of money, I can recommend http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stretching-Anatomy-Arnold-Nelson/dp/0736059725/ref=sr_1_25 1
JLambert97 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I'm pretty out of shape at the moment, I'm starting to get into exercising a bit.. Starting by doing press ups, pull ups and basic stuff at home, maby I will eventually move this in to the gym and get into it

Congrats! MA is the way! Let us know which one you choose and if possible DO try Muay Thai and Krav Maga.
halbaradkenafin Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Congrats! MA is the way! Let us know which one you choose and if possible DO try Muay Thai and Krav Maga. I believe there are classes for both in my area so I'll definitely give them a shot. Got Capoeira tonight and I've been told bring water and an open mind so that should be interesting.
Miscbrah Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Very bendy them Capoeiristas are! I'm way too graceless an individual to attempt that. ALMOST got the spinning back kick usable, but I've had a lifetime ambition to learn the spinning hook kick. On it two years and counting! Seriously the least co-ordinated combatant in the universe. If you pick that up before me let me know! Been off training with the lurgy and so had a drastic drop in the calories, which has made me very bleh. Back to the gym tonight for an emergency full-body and a little cardio, hopefully better in time for MT tomorrow night. My xrays and blood tests came back and there's bugger-all wrong with my hip joint, so whatever that pain is I'm gonna give it some warm running and get back on the squats and deadlifts. Heeehhhh das it.
Patrick Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Haha, I've only just coordinated my spinning back fist properly!
