Patrick Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 I got a little bit sweaty this morning! Leg day is always fun and my squat is back up to 150kg woop. Here's a rare and sweaty gym selfie from yours truly! (ps. Yes I know wearing a hat in the gym in stupid, it's not even cold! But i love hats. With my hat and earphones on, I am no longer a part of this world!) mirin dem bicep gains. Height and weight? 1
Joanne Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Convinced myself in the six weeks holiday I would get out and exercise more.... Now its September... Same. Witcher 3 happened... and now MGS V is happening...
MrMat Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 mirin dem bicep gains. Height and weight? Ha thanks man. 5"10' ish and about 15 stone (96kg) but a bit puffy around the edges.
All-Office Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 (edited) As a former Boxer I put my trust in boxing training as the best for a weight loss and fitness. A few rounds on the bags and pads will work wonders for mind , body and sole Edited September 24, 2015 by All-Office

MGS V is happening... And how did THIS go? I have, well, opinions... FINALLY at LONG LONG LAST I'm back to lifting nearly. So many false-starts on the shoulder, then physio/rest, then repeat until the thing FINALLY looks to be mending. I have lost 2kg, gained almost 2" around waist and lost 1" from biceps. At my age, who knows how long that'll take to get back but I don't care, I'm back lifting and Thai boxing, albeit slowly. And I have parents divorcing, grandparents to re-home and exams coming up next month. Urrgh. However little time and energy I get, I'm overjoyed to be finally 'recovered' enough to get gym-ing. Joanne Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 I came 3rd in my weight category (out of 4) lifted 47.5kg, missed out on 50kg like I wanted. I smashed out 2 reps at 50 at the gym, but in competition you sit at the bottom waiting for the judge to say press... URGH! Hahahah. I'll PM you about metal gear. Peeps be angry if they see spoilers.
Miscbrah Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Well congrats all the same. Yes pausing at the bottom takes (conservatively) 100000% off your max lift!
Patrick Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 Done my lower back in doing MMA! Argh! Basically, we were practicing transitions from side control into an arm bar. And he got his leg placement wrong and slammed my body weight down on my back across his leg on the floor. My back hyperextended and now my lower back is sore and stiff as a brick! : ( :@
Joanne Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 that sucks. My advice would be to keep stretching it and (if you have one) foam roller it.
Patrick Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 Yeah i've been stretching, the injury happened on monday night, and last night i had a really long very hot bath and had some ibuprofen and it feels a lot better today. I'm thinking it'll be back to normal by monday! 1
Joanne Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Good to hear! Where do you go out of interest?
witch Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Been going to the gym a couple of times a week for a while now, on top of my two classes. Getting a bit bored so asked the employee if he could suggest some new bits and pieces I could do.. What he did was change my "certain number of reps at at a certain weight" on the chest press, upright row and lat pulldown to "start at a weight you can barely lift for 5 reps, then a sightly less heavy one for 10 reps, then the same one as you had before for 15 reps" Arrrggghhhhhhhhhhhh On another note, I have two exercises that I am struggling with because my knees do not like it - one is a squat with weights (to work pretty much the whole body) and the other is step-ups on each leg, again holding weights. I need to do something alternate that will have the same effect so that I can chop and change. Any of you gym bunnies got any ideas?
Joanne Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Deadlifts? They work the whole body and IMO aren't as tough on the knees... you just pick a big weight up with a straight back
witch Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Deadlifts? They work the whole body and IMO aren't as tough on the knees... you just pick a big weight up with a straight back I did wonder about those - but is my back up to it? Do you not bend your knees then? How does it work the legs?
Joanne Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Yeah you bend your legs a little. You can also do straight legged ones. It gets your lats, lower back and hammies. Deadlifts changed my life. 1
Miscbrah Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 (edited) Go light, make form super super super strict. Deadlifts RUINED my life. (Which isn't strictly true but they have a habit of aggravating old injuries if heavy.) Edited October 16, 2015 by Miscbrah
witch Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Go light, make form super super super strict. Deadlifts RUINED my life. I believe some time ago you were going to help with some alternatives? So if not deadlifts, which I don't think my back is going to like, then what? @Miscbrah
Miscbrah Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I believe some time ago you were going to help with some alternatives? So if not deadlifts, which I don't think my back is going to like, then what? @Miscbrah Ah pants I was going to wasn't I. Soz witch. Off the top of my head hack squats might be a good indicator. Most stress is on the quads and the rom sort of forces you to have a neutral-towards-concave back. Give those a (gentle) go and build them up a bit, see what they aggravate or if they aggravate nothing. (I'm not a personal trainer nor a medical professional, all advice used at own risk etc etc. ) 1
win Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 For those with weak knees i recommend calf raises and machine based leg exercises. Free weights are usually better all-round but machines are more muscle-specific so less stressful on the knees. Comparing your body weight (i'm not going to guess!) with say 10kg on a machine, means lifting lighter weights and therefore easier on the knees. Then go back to free weights when you can. 1
witch Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 It's just so frustrating when I can't do stuff because of my disintegrating feet/sore knees/short achilles/ incipient tennis elbow/asthma. I will ask the gym guys about hack squats.
Patrick Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 Good to hear! Where do you go out of interest? I don't live in b'town (awww chav phrase) i live in a town a few miles out so i go to one nearer to me.
Joanne Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I don't live in b'town (awww chav phrase) i live in a town a few miles out so i go to one nearer to me. Dat B'Town thooooo. I need to get into something else... as much as I love lifting heavy weights it doesn't motivate me.
Patrick Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 I lift to supplement the fighting. Give it a go and you might start doing the same. In b'town i hear "dave hakuda gym" is good for MMA/muay thai classes. Think they do women only classes as well if you'd rather that. I've never been though just seen it on facebook
unixman_again Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Copped a really bad landing in ballet class last night, which made my knee go a lovely shade of blue and it's still very twingey. Might have to buy my mate the physio a beer or two. One of the ladies there said "I bet that hurt!" as she was dancing with me across the room.
