Parasite (Amazon Prime)

 

Last year's Oscar-winner about the poor Korean family who inveigle their way into the lives of a rich one.

 

Watched this over two nights. The first night (up to when the doorbell rings) was quite interesting, but things take a turn after that. Worth a watch if you're into film and think it sounds intriguing, but not otherwise - it's quite an "uncomfortable" watch.

I got through 10 minutes then skipped to the end to see what happens but I'll take your word for it.

 

I tried the Jui Jitsu film too and did the same thing... quantity over quality.

Nobody.

Seemed a decent enough premise on the trailer.

First half was entirely diabolical.

Second half a vast improvement. Christopher Lloyd the only real saving grace.

Impossible not to draw comparisons to John Wick.

I mean, if John Wick is M&S Colin the Caterpillar, then Nobody was your 4 year old daughter's crayon drawing of Cuthbert the Caterpillar that you've stuck on the fridge knowing you can't stand the sight of it.

Some people seem to absolutely love this film but I can't see why. I'm just glad it was so short, so there was less time required to watch Mr Lloyd kick some butt.

That's disappointing, I was looking forward to it from the trailer. "Cheap knock-off of John Wick" is especially disappointing given that it's literally from John Wick's writer; you'd think that if anyone could do a good job of replicating the premise...!

Pretty much.

Peed off Russian guy because a relative got on the right side of main character? Check.

Cute animal involved? Check.

Overarching criminal fraternity? Check.

Family home decimated? Check.

 

Perhaps the daughter-drawing isn't a fair comparison, maybe it's closer to a Chinese copy of the Range Rover

It's a reasonable brain-in-neutral fun flick but if you've seen Wick you won't help but sit there just comparing it.

He seems to have given up and just be selling his name to movies. There was another one recently, small group against army, protecting the business man (Bruce Willis) with the golden idea that could save the world. He was barely in it and everything about it was bad, even Bruce didn't seem to be much in to it.

 

EDIT: Hard Kill, that was it. Don't bother.

Wild Target (Netflix)

 

An assassin becomes entranced by his target and saves her from another team sent after her. Together with a young man who seems to have "apprentice assassin" possibilities, they flee for their lives. Based on a mid-90s French movie.

 

Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Martin Freeman, Eileen Atkins, Gregor Fisher, and Ruperts Everett and Grint directed by Jonathan "Yes, Minister" Lynn. Sounds like it should be fun, but somehow falls flat. I think it was mainly Nighy's casting, as his usual schtick doesn't fit a top assassin, and the fact that Blunt's character is a complete user. Not to mention the ick factor of those two as a couple. Not totally awful but, if it's one that's been languishing on your list for some time, I'd cross it off your watchlist.

His surprise appearance at the end of a certain film was good, and there are a couple of OK post-Looper films, but he does seem to appear in any old tat. Either he just enjoys working or his alimony/child care payments are very high.

RED 2 wasn't awful, but I remember watching Hard Kill on Netflix 'cause the title card had him on it, and that was just... terrible (and his role in it was fairly pointless, anyway!)

Real shame, there've been some absolute cracking Willis movies of days gone by.

Plenty of action sequences many (most?) implausible, but I could say that of lots of films.

 

It held my interest, and I didn't find myself thinking about how long the film was (1 hour 55 minutes)

Paradise Hills (Netflix)

 

 

After what appears to be a fairytale wedding, apart from a modern song of subservience from the bride and a few hints that something is "off" in the dialogue, we flash back two months to the bride's arrival at what appears to be a training school for young ladies. Things are not what they seem, however.

 

I find the "x hours/days/weeks/months/years earlier"openings to films/shows annoying - they normally seem to be to try to give the audience some action to get them hooked. This time it just about works. As for the rest of the film, I enjoyed it - but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as it seems to have a very limited range of people who would enjoy it. So, if you think you'd like a thriller shot with the aesthetics of Tarsem Singh (but a bit less OTT) that has an SF edge but also a fairy tale one you could enjoy this too; otherwise you probably won't.

The Hunger Games on Sky. Elder son had read two books. Younger son has read all 3. Mrs. Ditto was disturbed by the concept of the book but read the with younger son. She said it is extremely well written and got absorbed by the book in spite of the concept. I was reluctant to watch the film for much the same reason. It's weird, but I got drawn in too and it's an excellent film. There's something more to this story in terms of social or political commentary. I haven't processed exactly what yet, but maybe book/film 2 & 3 will crystalise that for me. There's something about it that reminds my of the school texts that I had to read, Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies. To quote a good friend, it exposes the "thin veneer of society". In some ways, I wonder if it will become a literary classic and used as an educational text, but that may take some time, maybe never. Not sure if I should now read the books?

Mile 22 [Amazon Prime] Mark Wahlberg, as James Silva, is tasked with safely delivering a police officer out of Indonesia in [VERY] difficult circumstances.

 

Lots of action lots of noise and a conclusion that is intended to be unexpected, but I am sure some will anticipate it.

 

Run time: 1 hour 34 minutes.

For me, it kept the interest, but I was disappointed with how it ended. [No spoilers, even though it has been out since 2007. I have been meaning to see it for some time, and only now have I managed to get around to seeing it]

Chinese sci-fi - Earth is being moved because the sun is dying.

Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney)

 

In the magical land of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived in harmony until an evil called The Druun invaded and all but one of the dragons perished in driving back the invaders. The five human factions carry on, but an attempt to unite them ends in disaster and the return of The Druun when the relic that was protecting humanity is smashed. Years later, a young woman is searching for the last dragon, hoping that she can reverse the ravages of The Druun.

 

Well worth a look if you can enjoy animated films aimed primarily at kids; I'd certainly consider getting it on disk when available.
