sonofsanta Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 (edited) The Devil All The Time on Netflix, with Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgard, Robert Pattinson, Jason Clarke, etc. etc... follows a young boy/man (Holland) and the troubles he goes through in late 50s/early 60s Ohio, and intertwines the troubles and travails of a half-dozen groups of people in the local area with his story. Not a cheerful film by any stretch, but brilliantly acted and directed, and a gorgeous production. Helluva cast, too. Won't blow your mind but it is worth your time, if you're in the right frame of mind. Edited September 21, 2020 by sonofsanta

Lots of nostalgic fun if you enjoyed the others, and a cunning way of fudging "the song". Alas, Bill and Ted don't seem to be able to draw more than a handful of people to our cinema, let alone save all of reality. 2

Alas, Bill and Ted don't seem to be able to draw more than a handful of people to our cinema, let alone save all of reality. I saw that last weekend. A nice way to wind up the franchise and enjoyed it a lot. The Vue we were in was practically empty, even with £6.99 tickets on offer! I have to admit, I think Alex Winter was brilliant and Keanu was struggling with being 'fun', but they were helped out by their (on screen) daugthers who it would be nice to see in their own film as I suspect they were not trying to overshadow the two leads. I did read that the story was very constrained as the end of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was made post production and messed with the writers plans for a final film with it's newspaper headlines etc.

After a brief catchup/character intro sequence he first 30 minutes or so comprise a chase that I found incredibly tense. Things then slow down a little, but ramp up again pretty soon. Some of it doesn't make sense, and some of the action is muddled/dark, but generally a fine action film. Not sure why the reviews were so unfavourable.

Set after T2, and creates a timeline that ignores T3 and later movies. It basically plays like a "greatest hits" remix cover version of T1 and T2, but the target of the "Terminator" is a lot less annoying than teen John Connor.
Norphy Posted October 4, 2020 Posted October 4, 2020 Onward, on Disney+. Another Pixar film which turns on the feels, especially towards the end. Doesn’t quite have the emotional gut punch of the beginning of Up but it’s not far off. All in all, I enjoyed it.

The trailer makes this look really funny, but almost a whole film of both of them being incapable of doing anything but gabble gets pretty wearing almost as fast as they talk.

I've also not seen it because of disappointing previous films, might give it a whirl on Friday night with a few beers.

It's Terminator 6 : Terminator 3, version 3. It ignores Terminator 3, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Salvation and Genisys and does it's own thing following Terminator 2. It's definitely the third best Terminator film, but there is still a long gap between the first two and the rest of them. Damning it with faint praise really. Arnie is good in it though for the 20 minutes he turns up.

Mixed Drama/Documentary about social media user manipulation, how they keep people hooked and the ways it influences how people think. It's not going to be news to any of us tech people but I honestly think everyone should watch this. Even though it was all old news to me it did make me stop and seriously consider how much time I was giving over to the likes of FB and reddit. Despite knowing how it works I didn't realise quite how much time I'm wasting on it. After looking at my app usage times, notification numbers and unlock numbers (all WAY higher then I thought they would be) I have now actually gone through and disabled notifications for everything except phone calls, direct messaging and work email. Rather then pulling my phone out in them odd 10 minutes I have to kill I'm going to start carrying a small sketch book round with me and just doodle/sketch or think about things I want to do and write notes. I use FB and Reddit for a lot of hobby groups and I think it can still be used to do great things, so I'm not just going to dump them. However I'm going to try and stay very mindful of the fact that I'm being manipulated. I'm also not just going to use it to "kill time" which I think is my biggest problem. It's just so easy to sit and scroll mindlessly through reddit rather then get up and do something productive with my time. 2
LeMarchand Posted October 8, 2020 Author Posted October 8, 2020 Illang: The Wolf Brigade Korean live action version of a Japanese anime that transplants everything to a near future Korea, where North and South are trying to unite to be able to stand against a Japanese/Chinese/American/Russian coalition. Various factions in the country have different beliefs and are fighting both physically and with espionage tactics, and it's impossible to sympathise with any of them. Trailer made it look like it could be a cool actioner with a side helping of romance, but it's a confusing, muddled mess - especially as there are a number of pairs of guys who dress alike and look similar (maybe not if you're Korean?) so it gets hard to tell who's who. Very poor. One of the few Netflix films I've bothered to rate - down, obviously.

I agree they were pretty heavy handed on the "drama" side and it probably would have been better without that part, but the documentary side of it seemed pretty much spot on.

I feel like dramatising it that way is the only way to make 'the masses' understand. I think it probably just falls a bit flat for us because we're in a career where we kind of already know how it works, broadly speaking. I mean sure there's not literally a bunch of dudes in a room deciding what's happening for every facebook user, but generally speaking it was a good effort at portraying the process and how disinformation and conspiracies spread.
