When he finds out that his mom is dating a white cop, a wannabe gangsta black kid tries to be some actual thugs to scare the cop away. Very sweary, but (maybe I was in the right mood) I found it very amusing. Totally un-PC and THE TRAILER BELOW PROBABLY HAS LOTS OF SWEARS.

Main issue I had with RoS was it seemed to spend half the film retconning what happened in Last Jedi, and not in a particularly subtle way.

 

There were a lot of good ideas in Last Jedi that were thrown away (and similarly, a lot of ideas in Force Awakens that the Last Jedi discarded). It just makes the trilogy seem like a spat between the two directors.

Not confusing, confused. At times the film didn't know what it wanted to be or what story it wanted to tell.

I also agree, it had two or three too many songs.

 

The two Frozen films are best watched together as a single long film.

 

I watched Trolls World Tour a few days ago.

Off of the top of my head.

 

Olaf's song about getting older & christophe's Terrible rock ballad in the forest.

Both songs have element that add to the story, but they're terrible terrible pieces of music and neither fits in with the other musical themes in the film.

 

If Frozen 2 was an album then those two songs would be cut and offered as 'bonus' tracks on the special edition.

I hated that song, though it seemed everyone I spoke to loved it. Though I didn't hate it for the actual song, but for the fact it didn't fit in the film...that style of music I mean. It really took me out of the film because it didn't match it's 'period'. Yes I know it's an animated film and a fantasy, but it's set in an old-timey world, but with magic. Having heavy guitars and drums just really threw me. I had a similar experience when binging Peaky Blinders and they had cutscenes with modern music.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

 

Can't say I know more than the basics about Pokémon, but this was a pleasant enough watch - though very predictable. Pikachu was incredibly cute.

 

Men in Black: International

 

Much better than I was expecting, maybe because I'm not a huge fan of Will Smith and so didn't miss him. Again, fairly predictable, but enjoyable enough if you're not expecting a masterpiece.

Not really a movie, but i've just binged watched Afterlife 1 and 2 on Netflix and MY GOD!! So powerful and such an emotional program. You go from laughing so hard to crying my eyes out.

 

Certainly a must watch!

not sure if it really counts as a movie: Beastie Boys Story - the new Apple TV Spike Jonze documentary, well, it's more of a TED talk by Adam Horowitz and Mike D. If you're a fan it's worth a watch, pretty interesting and funny, learned some stuff, some stuff I knew, some stuff I thought I knew but now the truth is out, or a different version of the truth

I sat through The Last Skywalker returns of the Jedi to the dark side thingy last night.

 

Just terrible mess, might rewatch number 3 with Ewan to see which one is worse

Hellboy (2019)

 

Reboot of the mid-noughties couple of comic adaptations.

 

If you've seen the trailer and thought that it looks MEGA!!! You'll probably like this. If you had any sort of doubt, give it a miss. Apparently there were behind the scenes shenanigans that I can only assume involved replacing normally reliable director Neil Marshall with a 14 year old metalhead who was told he could have as much swearing and gore as he wanted (but no boobies).

 

The latter was particularly odd as Milla Jovovich spends most of the film looking like someone had to CG her front so that nothing was showing, or maybe to make it look like there were fewer clothes than were there. Hellboy's facial prosthetics weren't up to the standard of Ron Perlman's (plus the flaming sword and crown looked ridiculous) and David Harbour seems to have been told he was in Hellbrah rather than Hellboy. Sasha Lane is fairly new to acting, so her posh British and flat London accents are good efforts. Unfortunately they often happen in the same piece of dialogue. More experienced actor Daniel Dae Kim's manages a couple of words in a decent British accent at a time, but then it all goes pear-shaped.

 

Ed Skrein, who stepped down from the role taken by Daniel Dae Kim as the character is supposed to be part Japanese - well, Korea is closer to Japan than England - must be breathing a sigh of relief. One of the worst and most disappointing films I've seen for months.

Shaft (2019)

 

Belated sequel to Shaft (2000). Someone obviously thought Samuel L. Jackson was getting on a bit (amazingly he's only 6 years younger than original Shaft Richard Roundtree and almost old enough to be co-star Regina Hall's granddad) and wanted to introduce a new Shaft for the young 'uns so now we have Jessie T. Usher as JJ Junior teaming up with his Dad to take down the crims of Harlem.

 

Initially quite a lot of fun, but it starts to drag a bit. I was surprised that it ran under 2 hours as it felt like longer - not that it dragged, but because so much seemed to go on, though some scenes did go on a bit. Not one to rush to Netflix for, but an OK action thriller.
