sparkeh Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 The Guest: Didn't actually know anything about this film, the wife wanted to watch it and I was expecting a mainstream Hollywood action film. How wrong I was and was treated with an 80's inspired, knowing, schlockfest. Increasingly ludicrous and great fun. Highly recommend.

Never heard of it before but it was in Tesco for about £3 6 months ago and had a decent looking front cover, so I bought it. Didn't get round to watching it til' now. Could've been worse, could've been better. Had potential, but the lack of budget and known actors really showed.

Certainly won't be rushing out to watch the sequel I watched 21st jump street on a flight to America traveling solo... The drug scene had me in fits of laughter, people must have thought i was mad. The second one wasn't as good.

GREED Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Spooks: pretty good basically like a long episode (huge Spooks fan). Hope it opens the door for new series when Kit Harrington is killed off in GOT. It got a little lost in the middle trying to adaquately allow Peter Firth the acting space he sorely deserves (top actor). Avenger 2: liked it on every level, better than the first BUT felt the story was just not as good and grandiose as it should have been.

It at least had something to say about living in the past and dwelling on regrets, even amongst all the silly jokes about penises and homosexuality. The 2nd one is just silly jokes about penises and homosexuality. Even my 14 year old daughter got bored after half an hour and went to bed. Terrible. Europa Report: a fairly accurate sci-fi movie, for once, as far as the science goes. Shame it's so slowly paced and ungripping. Can we all, please, just admit that the pretend documentary style of film is simply not conducive to the aim of entertainment?

How mad, I watched that exact same film the other day and for the same reason, was cheap in tesco, lol. Thought the same as you, had the potential to be really good but fell short due to low budget. 1

Last film I saw was (despite @witch advising otherwise) "Big Ass Spider". Pretty much what you'd expect from the title. Not good, but if you enjoy bad creature features and have enough alcohol it's enjoyable enough. Clare Kramer (Glory in "Buffy") hasn't aged well, though.

Roberto Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I took in 'A Royal Night Out.' with my partner and her mother on Saturday. I don't know if anyone else here listens to the Radio 5 movie review show on Fridays but I have to agree with Mark Kermode - in a lot of ways its an awful film but it's also a lot of fun. It isn't the sort of film I would have chose to watch myself (sadly our schedule meant that my partner and I couldn't fit Spooks in as well as that's much more my thing) but on the whole I enjoyed 'Royal Night' and I'm glad I watched it. We also watched Far From The Madding crowd the other week and that was just great.
browolf Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I watched Seventh Son over the weekend. It was a just alright movie with a somewhat star studded cast Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Kit Harrington. Even though I read the book years ago and can barely remember it, pretty sure the book is a better experience.
halbaradkenafin Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Finally got round to watching Oblivion as it was on Netflix, pretty good film overall with very nice visuals and a pretty cool plot. Off to see Mad Max tomorrow, expecting it to be light on plot but I'm going to see it for all the effects, explosions, cars and other staff you get in a Mad Max film.

Based on Spooks and GoT "pouting" and "looking slightly constipated" might be more accurate. (Though apparently he is good in "Testament of Youth").

Although Kit Harrington's "look broody" acting was overshadowed thoroughly by Kiefer Sutherland's "ham it up like a field full of pigs!" approach to playing Evil Roman General Stereotype. Good film, so long as all you're expecting is Crap Gladiator + Volcano.

Will get around to it as I enjoy most of Paul W S Anderson's films. Don't understand the hatred of him on the internet - yes he's not the greatest/most intellectual director, but he makes entertaining films. I suspect that if another director had opened a film with the reverse slomo assault of the last Resident Evil, he'd be being slobbered over as a "visionary".

GuyJD Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Myself and the mrs watched Chappie last night, I wasn't holding out much hope for it keeping her hooked but it surprised us both with how good it was, it had a few dodgy sounding South African accents from actors that clearly weren't for South Africa and it shared a lot of the plot from RoboCop as well as the RoboCop voice but all in all well worth a watch.
