kennysarmy Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) Teacher reported this issue this morning. Confirmed by us using a test teacher account. For network admin accounts there is no issue playing youtube videos in IE. The error after a few seconds of video is "An error occurred, please try again later. Learn More" Initially I thought this would be a GPO issue so one by one removed all the users policies.......until none were applying! I then moved the test teacher account to the network admin accounts OU..... I then added the test teacher account to all the groups that the other admins are in...ie. domain admins, administrators etc. STILL this account cannot play youtube videos. I'm now at a loss at what else to try as I've effectively made the test teacher account an admin account.... To add we are accessing the internet via a Smoothwall device. 6Foot2 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 We also see this for staff users but it isn't consistent: It doesn't happen for all staff and trying again later with IE sometimes shows that the problem has gone.
fairm010 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 DO you have the latest Flash plugin for IE? Chrome has Flash built in.
localzuk Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 IE11 and Flash 14.0.0.176 by any chance?
abillybob Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 DO you have the latest Flash plugin for IE? Chrome has Flash built in. About to post exactly this, it may just need a flash update depending on whether or not you running Windows 8 or 7, Windows 8 Browser comes with the latest versions of flash a bit like Chrome although Windows 7 Browsers need updating manually!
kennysarmy Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Thanks for the replies guys - latest version of flash updated this week: Flash Player 15.0.0.152
kennysarmy Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Is this IE11? On Windows 7 or 8? IE11 on Window 7 64bit
kennysarmy Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 We also see this for staff users but it isn't consistent: It doesn't happen for all staff and trying again later with IE sometimes shows that the problem has gone. Do you believe this to be related to smoothwall?
kennysarmy Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) I've just set up a test PC with the STAFFPROXY details (SWGfL) and the user can access youtube using IE11 - so it is definitely a smoothwall issue. Switching back to the IP of the smoothwall for IE's proxy immediately breaks youtube.com Edited September 11, 2014 by kennysarmy
Mako Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Ensure that the audio/video drivers for the machine are up to date and that the audio jack is firmly connected. YouTube on IE has an issue where the video will stop if there is a problem with the audio device. See this thread for more info: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/133985-youtube-videos-stopping-immediately-after-playing.html

See this thread for more info: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/133985-youtube-videos-stopping-immediately-after-playing.html All testing was done with headphones attached. The issue turns out to be our Staff AUP policy which was blocking audio file types. Unblocking that standard smoothwall category fixed the issue.... YouTube MUST have made recent changes as it always used to work with that category on our AUP. Issue resolved.
6Foot2 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Do you believe this to be related to smoothwall? No: We don't have Smoothwall.
Oaktech Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 This might sound daft... try this: go to the gear icon, select safety, then click to turn active x filtering on. see what happens.
localzuk Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 This might sound daft... try this: go to the gear icon, select safety, then click to turn active x filtering on. see what happens. That will turn Flash off - it disables all active x objects unless they're in a whitelist.
psycho98 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Aim having the same problem with ie10 u tube works with admin but not as any other user says needs flash player installed
free780 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Its not enhanced protected mode disabling flash is it?
NikChillin Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 We have had this problem for a while and deleting the history helped, however, Google have made changes to how Youtube runs and we had to enable HTTPS on our filtering to fix it. Our Filtering service provider supplied this: Google made changes to YouTube over the summer to force all connections to use SSL for access to YouTube. This change results in YouTube being blocked for Rule Sets which allow access to YouTube but also have ‘Block Google and YouTube HTTPS (fail-safe) enabled. The Google fail safe option does the following: • Blocks any SSL request to youtube.com, regardless of the host coming from SNI/TLS or a server certificate. • Blocks all requests to the main domain or any subdomain of google.com and google.co.uk when the host comes from a server certificate and not SNI/TLS. Note: There are a number of apps, like Google Drive, along with some ChromeOS features that do not use TLS/SNI. This means that they can also end up being blocked when they make SSL requests to any Google domain with the above Google fail safe option enabled. (EIS)
psycho98 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Hi Does anybody know how we can turn of the active x setting in the safety setting via the clog using group policy ?
Shadow_Walker Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Our youtube is down as well for IE. RM are looking into it for us but no joy so far.
Tesla Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 not sure if any help, but we had issues with youtube, had this reply from our support Steve, > > > > I've removed your entries and added youtube.co.uk, youtube.com > > youtube-nocookie.com (which I've not seen before but was being blocked and I have added in ytimg.com as trusted on your system, the service seems to swing between i.ytimg.com ( which you already had) and s.ytimg.com and maybe another. I have also added in ggpht.com. This now seems to work ok apart from the banner advertisement which is not required anyway. . ( doubleclick.net )
Boredguy Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 If your on the SWGfL, we had a update this morning to say we need to allow googlevideos.com in RM SafetyNet due to the changes they have been making to get round the IP block that Google slapped on them last Friday.
Shadow_Walker Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 changing internet explorer youtube to https from http works for us but is only a temp workaround for now.
itgeek2008 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 We had this issue as well. We use lightspeed rocket to filter our traffic and by un-ticking the "Block Google and YouTube HTTPS (fail safe)" within Rule Sets fixed the issue for us
HoboNinja Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Was this in conjunction with YouTube for Schools? I had some customers having issues with it and it was an issue with playing videos with the flash player in IE and FF. Navigating to YouTube and selecting the option to use html5 resolved it in the interim while we waited for Google to fix the issue (It was a problem on their end), and it seems to be fixed as of around mid last week. Also if you are blocking googlevideo.com that could be an issue, Google seems to be using that as a CDN for YouTube now.
