Projector In A Woodwork Room?

We have been asked to put a projector and computer in a Woodwork classroom. I have said no because the sawdust, and other classroom dust, will quickly collect in the projector and computer and to minimize the risk of fire these would require frequent cleaning.

 

My questions:

 

Are the reasons I am objecting to this install correct/valid?

Do you have projectors and computers in Woodwork Rooms?

If you do how often do you clean them?

We've got an older projector in ours, not a problem. To be honest we probably dont clean them as much as we should, they have the same cleaning schedule as the rest of them.

Just make sure you clean it every half term (or if you're term time only, just after every half term) and it shouldn't be an issue.

 

We have two woodwork rooms with PCs and projectors in, one of which gets quite clogged up quite quickly, but so long as it's cleaned every few months there's never an issue.

We had a short throw one in a wood work room and it was terrible for collecting dust, you can get projectors with automatic filters and that would help.

a lot of DLP projectors are filter less, I haven't tried on in a woodwork room though. The Millennium PC seem to be ok.

If this were to go ahead we would only consider a DLP.

Was just about to say, DLP only. We have them in some tech rooms and they seem to last alright, use the ultra short throw kind here which usually puts them closer to the board and further away from the environment if only by a little bit.

Have used projectors in wood work before and was fine. Bit more dust collected on filters than normal class but once cleaned it was fine. Also used computer and projector in cookery class. That one as said earlier was truly a pita. The filters would clog up with all sorts and eventually would have to replace. Think they were on their 2nd machine when i left and the room was only 3 years old.

I would go the other way and either put in an lcd with an auto filter or find the brand that offered the biggest filters possible and a lot of filter can be really silly and small.

 

A filterless DLP is designed for normal levels of dust and not the amount created in a woodwork room.

You should be okay with a projector that has filters just so long as you clean them each half term. Most education units can cope with challenging environments and the cleaning is very superficial. Either hoover or used compressed air to blow the filters through and use a soft cloth on the lens.

 

If your still worried about the build up of debris i would opt for a DLP. Since most DLP projectors are filter free, you do not have the hassle of cleaning, maintaining and replacing filters.

 

You can then maybe put those woodworking skills to use by building a surround with some sort of gauze material to add an added layer of protection to the unit. Saving it from sawdust and high flying hammers.

We used DLP filterless projectors in our workshop rooms - they were wrecked pretty quickly as a result, with woodwork and paper dust creeping into the internals. We swapped them for LCD type with filters - no complaints since.

We put a DLP in there as it had a much slower fan speed so it didn't suck up as much crap and tbh it lasted 2 years and the bulb blew, no other trouble at all

We have your standard projectors in our technology rooms, including wood work. Just clean the filters every half term, you'll be fine. The sawdust isn't as big a deal as you would think.

 

Oh and we have a computer in there too, which also isn't a problem.

I actually find the Art room more of a problem for collecting dust in the projectors no idea why...

No issues with projectors in our woodwork room - the cookery room with fat and grease cause more problems.

 

I think I would also consider a larger plasma / lcd screen - it may be more expensive initially but cheaper than replacing the projector or getting it cleaned after 3 or 4 years.

I've used a couple of the interactive short throw epson projectors in our food tech and DT rooms and positioned them on a wall as far away from sources of steam and dust and both are still going strong after 18 months. A large interactive LCD screen would be a better or maybe more expensive option.

Yeah this, the fat and grease clog the filters and make them extremely difficult to clean, typically they need replacing altogether (the filter) and eventually as you say the projector will need to go.

We have one in our DT room, not had any issues with it. Our science room ones are more trouble to be honest! With their constant burning of stuff which goes straight into the filters. At least the DT room has proper extractors on all the cutting machines.

I suspect so, there's also windows in that room so ventilation helps a bunch I expect.
