Danp Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 As we have replaced a batch of machines with SSDs we have a stack of 2.5" drives sat doing nothing, thoughts on what we could use them for?

3s-gtech Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Depends on size, but Ebay? 2.5" SATA drives have value due to the number of PS3s with stingy capacity drives. We have a huge number of brand new drives sitting about due to SSD swap outs - they'll be sold.

As they are ex-school drives I would not let them out of the building, either we put them to use or they are destroyed.

Boot it from usb (yumi to make the bootable usb), select autonuke when it boots, pull the usb when the image has been read and walk away for an hour or two. Leave the usb stick in and you'll be making a new one...

Regarding DBAN, I use it here but due to it not being certified or whatever is it an acceptable method of wiping a hard drive as far as the DPA is concerned? USB 2 / 3 caddy's and use them like a memory stick to store useful utils / data ( make them bootable if you want to ) so you can diagnose laptops / desktops with and backup peoples data etc etc I could use a wodge of em so if you would be willing to send me a few - I'd take some off ya hands !! Or maybe keep them as backups so if you have a few SSD's fail then you could swap the SSD for the normal 2.5" drive and re image, continue to use until you get the replacement SSD etc ?? Relatedly, do you buy systems then pull the drives for externally sourced ssds often, we may have to look into that thanks to the 200+ dollar extra for ssds from reasonable brand hardware suppliers.

Done this a stack load, there is even a caddy that will emulate a blueray or DVD or fed as well as a drive which works great with these, they are a bit touchy with Seagate drives but are really useful. 1
