sparkeh Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 For my part, I think he will be great. He is a great actor and I think having an older Doctor again will be interesting.
localzuk Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 He needs to be as fast paced and energetic as the younger Doctors - else the teens may lose interest.
speckytecky Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Top man - he was fabulous in the part of Oldsen in one of my top ever favourite films Local Hero. A film also marked by its fab Mark Knopfler soundtrack.
sparkeh Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 He needs to be as fast paced and energetic as the younger Doctors - else the teens may lose interest. Hmm good point. I wonder if it's to encompass a bigger audience. I know older people who switched off when Matt Smith took over.
Fleetwood Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 *sigh* The crowd of crying "fans" are already gathering and saying he'll be rubbish. These are the exact same people who are saying they love Matt Smith and yet thought he was going to be rubbish. These are also the same people that bummed David Tennant yet thought he was going to be rubbish. Rinse & repeat. I was personally delighted, he's got a great aurora about him and it's about damn time we had somebody older again, the whole 'young heartthrob companion-flirt worthy' doctor type was getting sour. You can already tell he's going to be a badass/dark doctor, just by this video clip!: BBC One - Doctor Who, Exclusive Video: Peter Capaldi is the New Doctor!
Fleetwood Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Some things never change... Hahah I saw that earlier, it's completely accurate! I've also just realised, your username is going to have you in a nostalgia loop for all eternity now I have to say, I reckon his doctor will be more of a father-figure/mentor type.
FishCustard Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Hahaha, very true - but it'll remain one of Eleven's signature things, like Four's scarf, Seven's umbrella or Ten's 3D glasses - he'll be forever known as the man who fell out of the sky in a box, fell out of the box and ate fish custard. Yeah, more calculating and cerebral like Sylvester McCoy was. I think it'll be good to have a change, it'd get boring if every Doctor was very similar. I'm looking forward to seeing the new outfit
Fleetwood Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 (edited) Indeed, the outfit! Some people over at DWT are saying they'll give him a costume similar to Colin Baker's... oh god, the horror. I reckon he'll either go for something smart/simple like what he was wearing for the announcement, or it'll be a real "Old wonderer's" type costume. So many possibilities! I think they did that TARDIS interior change at a good time, it'll definitely suit a dark doctor. Also, who else found the general show cringey? Peter Eccleston anyone? sparkeh Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Also, who else found the general show cringey? Peter Eccleston anyone? Heh, I only caught the last five mins but that was enough. It was a bit weird...
Fleetwood Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I personally thought it was too much, they should've kept it subtle like Matt's announcement was. I won't even get started on the 'guests' they had on... (Apart from Peter Davison <3 and Bernie Cribby)
rich_tech Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 seems a good choice and quite an interesting actor, I think like any of the characters though, hes only going to be as good as the writing, Tennant had some excellent writing behind him, End of Time / Rassilon stuff was all quite excellent way to bring his writing to a close, though a lot of the episodes there were of a higher quality, Matt Smith was a decent enough doctor too I thought, though the writing definitely dipped in quality for me and was not so good I felt for him, episodes devoted way too much to the whole "Rory/Amy/River Song" stuff, though River was quite an interesting character and probably the best of those three.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I'm rather looking forward to the new series (as if I wasn't already!) I think Peter could be an excellent choice. I did worry that as he'd been in both Dr Who and Torchwood already that they might struggle to explain that, but I guess they did it well enough with Gwen and Martha (even if they should've shot her at the first given chance) I hope we will have a series thats a little more serious with some darker comedy as I reckon this'll suit him perfectly. On a side note, it was interesting to see Alex Kingston in NCIS Season ten the other night. She practically played River but with a different name, and I'm sure there were several veiled Who refs flying about (no spoilers please, I'm only half way thru the series!)
LeMarchand Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I'm looking forward to see what PC does with the role, but I wonder whether an older doctor will drive away the fair-weather fans and definitely the GURLS that DT brought to the show. As long as the don't give him a boy band companion to keep hold of that demographic...
LeMarchand Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 It seems as if PC was more into DW than he let on to Zoe Ball. Here's an article in a fanzine. Plus it seems that he may have wanted to run the fan club himself.
