Do You Have To Have Beard To Be A Network Manager? [Female Network Managers Excused]

I was attended a meeting a couple of days ago where all Network Managers were male. We were asked [in a jokey manner] if a Network Manager must have a beard [all Network Managers at the meeting had beards]

 

Following this I thought I would ask Edugeek members about their beard/non-beard status [sorry ladies: Don't know how to attach a poll that you could take part in also]

@Netman, @bossman and my other friend whose name on here I can't remember!!!! (snc?stc? @sbc I think) are all network managers and do not have beards. Don't think @Oaktech does either.

Just a 70's revival thing. Theres plenty of beards on the TV that you wouldn't have seen 10yrs ago.

We'll look back and laugh at ourselves.

Well, mrwITch has always had a beard although now that he is looking for a job I have persuaded him to shave it off for interviews as it is completely grey and makes him look much older than he is.

Mind you, he is a 70's guy...

This one tickles me as I was thin and clean-shaven when I started here as a Technician, while my boss was "larger" and had a thick beard (half-Italian so it grew back in days even if he did shave it all off).

 

Now I too am broader than I used to be and have a permanent beard... and my Technician is thin and clean-shaven.

 

So yes, around here maybe it is a bit of a pattern!

I have a bit of a beard now, which is met by mixed reviews amongst the staff. I dunno, I like it.

 

I have to say, there is a high percentage of IT staff who have beards.

I have a beard and shave it off for meetings and interviews....thats it. Otherwise it is beard town.

@Kwagner and a few other network managers I know that don't have a beard ( well at least I don't think they do ). Correct me if im wrong !!

im a tech, but I can grow a decent length beard in a week if I dont shave, having to shave daily here to keep it manageable, when it gets longs its horrendous shaving it

No beard but rarely clean shaven unless I've had a hair cut in which case it gets trimmed

A door-knocker IS the same thing as a Van Dyke. According to your link, anyway?

Clean shaven baby. Keeps for smooth skin and a nice clean face. If ever a spot pops up, it's like spotting a girrafe in the middle of a million zebras. It's noticeable. *Runs to clean and clear*

It depends which day of the week it is. I only shave once a week normally on the weekend. So Monday no beard then Friday slight beard growth.

Can I ask and am not meaning to sound horrible or anything. What is it with designer stubble? I was married to a man with a full set and he only shaved it all off after we split up. The stubble look just looks well 'scruffy' and not really a good look. Just wondered and guys no offence intended.

Different (for the sake of respect) 'females' find different things attractive. Some prefer their partner or person their dating to have stubble / facial hair, others prefer clean shaven. I've been told to grow facial hair so that i look 'older' as i'm often mistaken for a child. Maybe that could play into it? It helps to point out who is 'older' and who is 'younger'?

I often used to sport facial hair until it started coming out grey and making me look old.

I had two job interviews for a NM role pre-beard and did not get either of them. I then grew a beard and got the very next job I applied for. Now in between that time I did get a lot more experience and a few extra qualifications, but I like to think it was actually the beard that got me the job!

It is requested that we are cleanly shaven during term time. During the holidays I leave my stubble for as long as I can cope with it, I need to find some decent clippers that can give me an even 3 days growth all the time

I tried but shaved it off as new hairs shouldn't be grey.

 

Our NM does have a beard though.
