BT Exchange: 21CN WBC status (???)

If SamKnows tells me my BT Exchange is 21CN WBC enabled does this mean I should be able to get BT infinity or is it something else?

No. I think Infinity is FTTC. What you're referring to there is ADSL2. To my knowledge.

Not always....it depends on the specific cabinet that you are running off - I've even seen it where multiple cabs span postcodes but not everyone in that post code can get infinity.

 

Also 21CN is different from FTTC so best bet is to try and sign up for BT Infinity and see what happens

Sam knows has an fttc tab which should tell you also the bt adsl checker will tell you your cabinet number and status.

Also http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/fibre/checker.php can give you your cabinet number.

Has anyone had letters from BT about forced upgrades? I've been out of contract for over 5 years so never upgraded but now they want to send an engineer in. I never replied to the letter and didn't get cut off or any further communication. Only going from 8MB to 12MB though with their leaflets and letter promising up to 70MB+.

I would have moved from BT to another provider to an FTTP service or ADSL2+ on a short contract.

21CN is their infrastructure upgrade - it is seamless and not related to the specific technologies available for the last mile provision of connectivity - basically, the system is moving from their old PPTP system to a IP based network for connectivity. Merging everything into fibre connectivity on their backbone.

 

FTTC/FTTP is a different issue, and Sam Knows lists it separately.

similar situation aparantly 400 homes with 1mb broadband isnt a prority when they can upgrade smalled cabs that already have a faster connection and will have a smaller percentage uptake

This happens quite a lot. There's also another scenario where it can happen.

 

If your property / school is very close to the telephone exchange often the line goes straight there rather than via a BT street cabinet. There are no FTTC / VDSL DSLAMS in the telephone exchange therefore FTTC and FTTP is not available.

 

Currently BT does not have a solution for this so the customers is stuck with ADSL only. Fortunately the ADSL is fast as they are so close, but still nowhere near as fast as FTTC.

i know bt seem to have a stupid roll out plan whereby instead of upgrading cabinets where the broadband is slow and where customers would bite their arm off for a connection capable of even iplayer they seem to upgrade people who have a decent connection and wonder why their uptake rate is low

How do you find out if the cab is?
