Right, it's time for me to smack down the meter ruler on the front desk and shout 'QUIET!'.

Now I have your attention, I'm going to lay down the rules on how EduGeek works....again.

This is my town, and whilst many of you have set up nice houses and get on well with your neighbours, some of you have decided that you can do what you want. Mainly this is visitors to the site who have little or no respect or knowledge of the rules we use here, so I'll lay it out for you.

We are one of the most respected IT sites in the world. EduGeek is where BIG companies come (and lurk) to get feedback and information on their products and services. What you say and do here reflects on all of us as a profession, and it goes a long way, all the way to the top in some cases. When the chairman of RM sees fit to pay us a visit on the first day of BETT, and call us 'very important', he's not saying it lightly. EduGeek is mainly a place of serious discussion, and is famed for it, humour too plays a role, but when it starts to degenerate into the net equivalent of a Friday night in Blackpool then it's time to get the big stick out.

Yes, humour is important, but when like us, you are viewed actively in schools and by law enforcement agencies, who view your posts on school security and pupil trends with great interest, then we must watch how we behave. We've breached that line between fun 'oo'er missus' innuendo and are now posting things unsuitable for viewing in the workplace.

So it stops. Now. Immediately. No 'ifs' or 'buts'. There are other places to be juvenile (I go to two other online communities for this type for online socialising). EduGeek is a place where your voice and comments carry far further than you can possibly imagine. Please don't spoil this rather special place we have, they are rather rare you know.

Not really. They just look to us for ideas on how children can be better protected, and what online trends they may be following, and steps we take to stop them getting into trouble.

Happy with what I think you're trying to say (although could have been written with "Us/Our" rather than "My/I"), but what happens when this message disappears off the homepage and isn't at the forefront of peoples minds when posting, or presented to newer members?

 

If this statement is a definitive instruction detailing how this site should be used from this point on, can it not be adapted and disaplyed on new sign ups, and before the submitting of new posts.... kicking off the previously debated site rules/aup feature?

Excellent, the SNR was getting a little low lately. I am all for some chat to get to know everyone better but at a certain point it takes away from the tech which is the foundation of the site.

It's a shame all this protection lark, I feel alot of it is blown out of proportion thanks to media whores and companys who want to make a fast buck. In my opinion [ and stress MY opinion ] ICT in schools holds back the development of some children.

For example you will get much better creativity out of a child by sticking some A3 paper in front of them and some crayons than some daft paint software.

We are obviously not their only port of call, but we often have ideas or find out things before anyone else. Thats what they look for. It's called intelligence gathering, and they are frigteningly good at it, and it's what they are paid to do.

There will be an adapted version that will replace the current set of rules that you agree to when signing up, these are currently on the to-do list as far as i am aware.

 

To be honest, not many people read the rules when they sign up anyway they tend to just stick a tick in the box and ignore it.

We did decide quite early on that having a set of hard and fast rules may be little impractical, and we should deal with situations as and when they arose. We set the tone for the site and expect everyone to adhere to it. Every now and then it slips, so every now and then we have to remind you. There will (in the very near future) be a set of rules posted up, both for members and sponsors, but the members rules will be more in the way of guidelines, so we can adapt them as situations dictate.

True, not that I'm bothered as the attitude I have always taken is if someone reads something I have said or made a comment on or said something about a product and they don't like it, then that's their problem, not mine.

Still people need to a chill out a bit - I've done my stint of high pressure IT related huge budget projects in the past. Been on call 24/7, spent hours in hotel rooms, and worked abroad - for me it's great to get the time to post some FUNNY STUFF and talk about aspects of my job and generally have fun and a laugh.......
