I really want to believe that all of these flat earth "believers" are all just on a massive Troll/Wind up, how anyone can believe that the earth is flat is beyond me, they are probably the same people that think that not vaccinating their kids is a good thing.

Exactly and exactly. There are people that truly believe these things, and those people are a) wrong and b) absolutely idiotic. But there's no telling some people.

You can convert a KKK member to being a properly adjusted human being, but I don't think you can convert those idiots short of blasting them into space and even then they'd think you've injected them with something to hallucinate.

Why do people still think the Earth is flat? - BBC News

You can't argue with their logic, mainly because it's illogical and they wouldn't listen if you did......

Stuart

From that page:

"The Flat Earth International Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, attracted hundreds of attendees who believe the shape of the Earth is a disc instead of a sphere."

I think these people are getting confused between Discworld and reality

Does anything make sense when viewed from a flat earth point of view? The motions of celestial bodies, the Earth's magnetic field, weather systems? Polar, temperate and tropical zones? That program where Ewan MacGregor went around the world on a motorbike?

A person able to get by with such a paucity of insight is probably perfectly happy to reject any sort of argument.

I would imagine it's largely a trolling and/or exploitation exercise for most of these people. That it's being held in a city that takes its name from an explorer who sailed off the end of the map only lends weight to that.

I Was talking to someone recently and they said Flat Earth theory started as a debating technique, take something so ridiculous and debate it, if you can argue coherently you are a good debater. Problem is some people believed it and the rest is history.

The issue is that those that believe it have glib comebacks or really in-depth pseudo-scientific answers, including mangled physics, to all the reasons why it is stupid idea so they feel they are correct. Most of the people who try and debate them aren't as dedicated so flounder and can't rebut their responses even though they are blatantly wrong, so the flat earther feels validated.

This is the issue with many of these 'hypotheses' (it's no theory, it doesn't have enough credence to be one). You can't debate against anti-science with science. Your initial basis explaining how the universe works is so different that it's basically a waste of time. Same as with religion vs science. Skeptoid did another great episode on it.

There are only two of us working in IT at the school and my colleague is an avid Flat Earther. I share very different beliefs on almost everything but I enjoy listening to his views on several topics. He's a Pentacostal Christian who is big on the doomsday ideas and conspiracies, so he voted to leave the EU to slow the 'systems' control of the world, likes Donald Trump as he is opposed to Obama and the 'regime', the former he genuinely believes is the devil coming to start the end and can talk for hours on this. The moon landings, 9/11, Russia, the north and south pole and the UN are all made-up or scripted to change our morals and the end-game is that we will all have to wear the mark of the beast to survive. He spent £200 on tinned food to stock in an outside shed ready for when the economy blows and no one can source food any more. We often joke that I'll be eating hats when it all comes true :)

Never a dull day in IT.

It is very much hypocritical. His biggest argument for the flat-earth theory is that you shouldn't believe what is being said in the media without experiencing it yourself and as I haven't personally been into space (Maybe some of you guys have? ;)) I can't prove what they have said is right. However pretty much his entire life is based around something someone had said 2000 years ago. Completely OK with anyone's spirituality however it kind of defeats his big argument for flat earth theories (as some of you guys delved into earlier it's either they're right/you're wrong).

He says that when you fly in an airplane and look out of the window, the proof is there because the horizon doesn't change and it's still at eye level. You don't see into space or see a drop down. To answer an often asked query, apparently you won't fall off the edge if you take a boat to the edges of the earth as each side is connected.. however you might do if you go to the north or south as these contain some sort of eye-opening proof that the earth is flat and this is why the US government controls it and don't want the mass public to know about it. He says that's why planes only fly east or west. Supposedly satellites are fake too and are actually just two big antennas in either the north or south in one of these secret bases and that's where our satellite data, 4G etc. come from.

Of course you can see the Earth is a rotating sphere from the moon.

Is the moon really the moon? Wasn't it blasted out of Earth's orbit on 13th Sept 1999? What we see as the moon must be a copy.
