Someone fancied a brand new network? (Fire at West Sussex school)

I did but i did t want it like this!!

This is my school, server room will be one melted mess as was in middle of the lower block that is burnt out. Think my case for pushing for cloud backup 2 years ago is now justified!

So you have cloud backup @DSapseid?

Weirdly my first thoughts upon reading the article were 'wonder if the NM is on Edugeek, hope they have a good disaster recovery policy in place!'

A terrible thing to happen, will be interesting if the cause can be found. You would fill gutted if it happened so close to the new year at your school.

Looks like an old building, on plus side hopefully they will get a new build. Will mean portacabins for a few years.

Edit: I just realised I have been past this school before, its a very small town but was there the other summer. I remember a large cottage in the town also brunt down and was left for years and years, hopefully won't be the same outcome, well it can't, the town needs a school.

I too was wondering whether it would be anyone on here.

Scary what can happen and definitely makes you think twice about disaster recovery.

I guess there's no indication yet on the cause of the fire?

Aside from IT, there's all the students work that will have been destroyed.

Happened to me over 10 years ago - actually I got to the school on my first day to find 2/3 of it had burnt down 2 weeks before!

Luckily the server room wasn't involved - but getting all the portacabins working on wifi all at the same time was constantly a 'task in progress'

so good luck to all involved - suggest mods send Eduhobnobs??

You have my sympathies, after one of the schools I look after burnt down last summer (link). It had only been open a year on that site after a refurbishment of an old school! At least it happened on the last day of term here so there was time to get things (mostly) running on a new site before the holidays finished.

21st August, going to be rather interesting :/

While not a huge believer of cloud (on 10Mb connections...) there was a reasonably recent tape with a full backup on my desk (small support company, so not at the school), along with having the encryption keys.

I feel for you mate :(. Were backups in the server room or in the part of the building that is still standing unless i saw an earlier photo?

Have you been to site yet?

I'm sure there are Edugeeks willing to help out. Please post what you can offer in this thread for @DSapseid

This is a bad time for the school. At least they're part of a MAT so there's some central support

Just shout if you need more pairs of hands. I'm sure there will be Edugeeks available... evenings or weekends if necessary... including me! Edited by elsiegee40

I expect @ICTDirect_Dave might be able to help with a temporary virtualisation host for this if needed? If not, we have some spare capacity here and could offer up to 16 cores, 64GB RAM and 2.5TB storage. Edited by Ephelyon

Thanks everyone for your messages of support.

I do have cloud backup of both file servers, exchange, sims and main dc. The head was happy when I told him!!

I haven't been to site yet, was told not to bother. Server room and all onsite backups are gone but will just need a new server to restore backups to but that's a few days away yet.

We have a primary school that is part of the MAT less than a mile away so GCSE results are being given out from there on Thursday.

We also have a separate sports hall that is untouched as far as I know so I can hopefully set up a new temporary server rack there. Just need to get bt to run new broadband into it. It has its own separate power supply which is good as well.

I will keep this thread updated with what happens!!

Hi mate, read about this on Sunday. Hope everything is okay?

Drop me a line when you finally need to start putting something back in, I'll see if we can get you a temporary server over without any of the usual bureaucracy.

Oh my :(

This is stuff of nightmares, and for it to happen to a person who is a member of this community makes it even more of a shock - a stark reminder that this kind of thing can happen. Thankfully I have two separate buildings to replicate backups between, and have a little NAS at home that is kept up to date with critical data.

Horrible to see those images of the place burning to the ground

I can't offer much, but we have a huge (3 empty 42U racks) amount of rack space spare protected by fire supression with the whole room protected by UPS so if you need somewhere to rack things up let me know.

Hope it all works out @DSapseid . Horrible to even consider. I was up til 3.45 this morning sorting issues I'd found with my backups. After reading about this I checked mine to find my San flapping Edited by markwilfan
