DSapseid Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 How is the network holding up? Network is holding up fine, doing the big upgrade to Win10 and Server 16 this summer. We are still running on generators as well but they massively over killed on my server room UPS. I have 6 servers, 1 san, 3 switches and 4 controllers (ruckus, smoothwall etc) and it says it will power them for 4 hours!! Had 2 issues with the generators in 20 months but i was never concerned with that amount of protection! Biggest issue ive had is with the intruder alarm where the cables run underneath the buildings and animals are eating the cables! 2
DSapseid Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 How long until the new building is complete? Early 2019 is all we have been told at this point, by the looks of the building i'm guessing either Feb 1/2 Term or Easter. 1
DSapseid Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 What network you got going into the new build? I've got HP switching/servers/san/desktops/printers and Ruckus WiFi in the temporary classrooms and will just be moving it over to the new build and double the amount of switches!!
DSapseid Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 5406 Core Switches 2920 Edge Switches R510 AP's DL380 G9 Servers Cant remember the desktops but i5 8gb RAM & 120SSD So i have the insurance to thank for a smoothly running network of new equipment but the downside is that it will all need replacing at the same time! Been working with the business manager to write a new rolling replacement plan into the budget....
IanT Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I did a big deployment last year for a school of 2920 models, stacked them bad boys!
DSapseid Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I did a big deployment last year for a school of 2920 models, stacked them bad boys! Yep think due to the location of the server room 85% of the network points for the whole school are cabled back to the server room!! This is going to result in 16 x 2920 stacked as 4 groups of 4
PotNoodleTech Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 So you've dualed up on the core switches too? Nice!!! Simply could not afford to do that when I bought my 5412 and 2530s
Jaan Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Now I'm just getting jealous... Nothing i match couldn't sort out! 1
DSapseid Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 So you've dualed up on the core switches too? Nice!!! Simply could not afford to do that when I bought my 5412 and 2530s Yes 2 x 5406 stacked and the servers have 20g connection to each switch. All other devices where possible have 2 network connections, one to each switch for full redundancy! I had a 5412 before the fire and the 2 x 5406 just gives a little piece of mind that there is not a single point of failure.

With hindsight that would have been the way to go, I was worried about future expansion but in the end we have not expanded as much as I expected! Mostly wireless not wired!
Popular Post DSapseid Posted March 5, 2019 Popular Post Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) Update Only 4 weeks to go now until we get handed the new building! I anticipate some long hours over the three week Easter break (we have taken an extra week before the 2 weeks to help with the move) but it will all be worth it in the end. Plus id rather be there and ensure its done correctly to what i want than it be done wrong and have to redo it. Here is a quick video of how it is progressing. Also below are a couple of photos of my server room and new office. Is 14 double power and 11 double data enough in my office? excuse the photos being on their side, cant work out to rotate! FishCustard Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Also below are a couple of photos of my server room and new office. Is 14 double power and 11 double data enough in my office? Better than the four data points I have in mine. Brand new building, plenty of data points to go around and you put 4 in the IT office. Muppets. Good luck with the new building!
DSapseid Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Better than the four data points I have in mine. Brand new building, plenty of data points to go around and you put 4 in the IT office. Muppets. Good luck with the new building! They asked me how many i wanted so i said loads. They originally had 24 data per classroom - not IT classroom, standard classroom for english etc..... I told them to stop being stupid as unless my server room was the size of a classroom with about 6 data racks in it then they need to cut it down! 40 classrooms at 24 points per room thats a whole load of patch panels and switches!! reduced it to a more sensible 4 per room plus high level for WAP.
mikeprice Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Update Is 14 double power and 11 double data enough in my office? Should be plenty - however I bet you will find yourself short with a year probably when the summer gets hot again and you want a fan and find every socket if in use - if you are like me you will find several filled up with power lead with nothing on the end of them!
mavhc Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 4 data points is enough, 1 per switch. There is a balance to be struck for standard classrooms, ease of installation now vs cost later. But so much stuff is wireless these days. What else did you end up with controlled by IP? phones? gates? alarms? lighting?

But so much stuff is wireless these days. What else did you end up with controlled by IP? phones? gates? alarms? lighting? Phones, CCTV, Access Control all by IP. Alarms have their own cabling. Lighting we have some weird light switches that can do 'scenes/moods' ie all on full, on half, on very low, dimmed at front but not at back. All in all about 8 buttons to turn a light on! This is per room, also have motion on every light so if someone goes home and leaves their lights on it turns them off after X amount of time. Gates are not electric at all just old fashioned hinges. Only have 2 though so not too bad - im going to look to tie this in to CCTV with ANPR for the staff cars to auto open. Our visitors car park is outside of the gates so its just staff car parks. I have 3 days worth of training on everything in the new build to come in the next few weeks. Doing everything from Alarm panels, fuse boards, solar panels to boiler software. Because 99% of it runs on a computer im doing all the training along with the premises team.

Sounds like DALI - i've just put it in at Church, but the main room switches just turn on/off. The control desk can dim/kill certain combinations for drama, theatre, projection of film modes. Nice, should be able to sync the excess solar power with the water heaters etc, become a 0 carbon school, might help mitigate all the carbon released when it was on fire last time 2
