So Amazon released a new toy in September in the UK called Amazon Echo. For those unaware, the Amazon Echo allows for voice control of various different functions, such as a calendar, shopping list, music and web searches. It can also do IFTTT (If this then that) functions, as well as control your Internet of Things household, such as smart switches and lights.
In something of a rarity for voice commands, the Echo, or Alexa as I call her, is actually pretty decent at picking up and understand

It must be a Christmas thing, but I'm going back to an idea I had a year ago, but didn't really take on, my Technicians non-technical guide (or TNTG). I'm going to try to put together a blog post each month (we'll see how well that goes...) on different aspects of a technicians job that sometimes aren't always obvious or in any manual, guidance or job description. It's designed for people who are finding their way into a technician's job, but I'm hoping it can provide food for thought for those

Spent 5 hours writing the perfect script for changing the control assessment passwords.
It
chooses a random word out of 1600
changes the passwords using dsmod
writes them to files on the staff drive
emails them to relevant teachers using blat.
It took 5 hours because I don't code in vbscript often so practically every line had errors. Only 34 lines... Also originally I was going to have th
Hi everyone,
Just wanted share some information regarding the New My Maths VLE site & Vimeo embedded video. We had a lot problem getting the videos to work via the site while monitoring student internet usage in context of Vimeo. We use Light Speed as our internet filtering system. The problem was we didn't want to unblock Vimeo to all students but want them to access the video via My maths which are hosted on Vimeo servers.
The solution was to allow this domain on light speed Vimeo
The good people at Pandora FMS have put together an interesting compilation of all the best network monitoring tools.
I'd like to take this opportunity to give my own opinion on the article and my personal experience with the tools mentioned. Quick FYI; the present analysis focuses on open source monitoring tools. I mention this, because licensed software, like Pandora FMS's Enterprise version, among others, feature many other tools and extra functionalities we could speak about. If what you'
The Dude is free SNMP poller from Mikrotik. The Windows version was recently discontinued and replaced with a newer one (still free) that only runs on their proprietary Router OS. Even though it was free, it is easily the best network monitor that I have used. Here is the version that has the Windows installable server piece.

I have been asked to swap some students from one tutor group to another. However I cannot find any information on how to do this. Can anyone help.

Hello All,
We have Macs that are bound to AD and get their setting from our Mac Server.
Has anyone successfully installed SIMS onto a Mac if so I would be interested in the process as the head would like it on her mac too.
Awaiting your answers.
This will guide you through how to configure your Cisco switches to save and backup their configuration automatically. The backup occurs at 8pm every day and every time the running configuration is saved.
Setup a TFTP server
You will need to setup a TFTP server if you don't already have one. I use TFTP32 and install it as a service so it automatically launches when the server is booted.
Ensure your switch time is correctly set.
To ensure your switch is performing the backup to the co
Windows Server 2012 has a built-in tool for migrating VMs between clusters that, by all accounts, works very well. But it has its foibles when it comes to moving Highly Available VMs (and honestly, why run a cluster if you're not going to run HAVMs?) and is a bit of a faff if you're moving to entirely new equipment, storage and all. You have to migrate from the old cluster to the new cluster on the same storage, and once that migration is complete, then migrate the storage. Which is lots of cros
Nowadays it’s not uncommon for companies to use Nagios as their main monitoring tool for networks, systems and applications. But it’s worth mentioning that Nagios is no longer the only one to meet those features, and it’s not rare to see people giving preference to other tools such as Zabbix or Pandora FMS. And this is because, for a few years now, there are a whole bunch of monitoring tools available on the market. Although most share the same features and offer most of the same solutions, not a
Hello Everyone
Just wondering if anyone else has been on the recieving end of a HT bringing in independent ICT Consultants to conduct an ICT Audit?
The story is this. A new SLT was formed approx 3 years ago. I notified the new SLT, (including Business Manager) then that we would need an investment in our back end in 2016. This was communicated to them at an ICT Strategy meeting and via an annual ICT Audit report that I send to all SLT members.
I carried out numerous hours worth of re
So how does one get security and software updates out to remote users? My school has three criteria that set this problem into motion: our teachers all have laptops, they're allowed to take said laptops home, and we're on a 9 month calendar year. So, for the staff that elect take their laptops home that means they're offsite for almost three months. That is a long time to go with no security updates...
Beginning to look at ways of solving this problem I saw that some admins had come up wit
