Building an ICT suite in pictures.

How to build an ICT suite   Cablers Network & AV Solutions have been providing education technology solutions to schools in the South East for many years and we have developed a few skills that many of our competitors do not come close to matching. One of the skills Cablers have developed is the ability to work with schools and colleges to design bespoke solutions that fit their education technology needs perfectly and the capability to bring those designs to life using only our own

Ruckus Firmware 9.8 & support upgrade entitlement Error

Hello,   I have just upgraded to version 9.8 of the Ruckus Firmware. But at first I got this error message after the upgrade had finished - "A support upgrade entitlement does not appear to have been purchased for this ZD. Please contact Ruckus Support further assistance. [What's this?]"   It seemed that the filtering was stopping my ZoneDirector calling back home. To resolve this issue I added the IP address 12.217.161.158 to the authentication exception in order to get this working. Once I h

Script to Map Network Shares on OSX (AFP or SMB)

I have tested mapping shares with Profiles and determined that it wasn't 100% reliable, and not as powerful as I liked. I decided to use an AppleScript to map the network shares, which is saved as an app with a nice icon and run at login. It can also be run if the shares disconnect while the user is logged in, which happens quite often since so many of our teachers just close the lid and can go weeks or months without actually logging in to their account on the network (sigh).   The script tha

How to licence Office 365- Licensing via Office Professional Plus

How to effectivelylicence Office 365 is not easy as with everything to do with Microsoft the bestbits are always hidden and you need to be Inspector Clouseau to get to theright answer. On initial inspection pricing forOffice 365 look expensive for instance, for a school of 150 staff and a 1000students you would be looking at an annual cost of £28,920.00 PA for an A3Plan. Interactive touch screen's for classrooms.

Classroom LED Interactive Displays   Large format touch screens are becoming a regular addition to the front of class these days. They are also a popular choice for businesses and look great in a meeting or board room setting. As a long established supplier and installer of innovative AV equipment we have taken a keen interest in this technology as it has developed. It has taken a few years for it to filter down from the high end, high priced units first available to the more sensibly p

Data Protection and Safe Harbor

I'm a big fan of cloud services. They provide universal access to powerful software at little cost to the school, and they're convenient for both students and teachers. But data protection is a big issue to get your head around, and many schools either struggle to understand the implications of storing data online, or simply never address the issue.   I've worked with schools that have dived in head first and never considered where or how their data is being stored, and also the opposite where

BYOD - The Transparent Proxy Headache Solved

Lots of people keep asking me what the transparent proxy forwarder in onBoarder is and how does it work. I thought I would write a post to try to explain what it is and how it can benefit a school or business with an upstream proxy.   Having been involved in deploying BYOD systems for some time now, the biggest frustration for us has been upstream proxy. The main problems we have encountered have been managing user device configuration and faults in guest and BYOD web redirection portals

Wireless and Power settings

Background info   Wireless has, for the most part, been the bane of my existence as a Network Manager. It's flaky, it's unreliable and it can ruin your otherwise lovely day. Combined with some odd behaviour with Windows 7 and domains, student logins tend to be a bit of a lottery, with around a 1% chance of getting an error "there are no logon servers available..." and another 1% chance of logging in fine, but having no My Documents or Start Menu as they haven't mapped properly on login.   Thi

Why all Primary Schools should have a Wireless Network

“Wireless networking works well in all schools and can help deliver major educational benefits.”   Now that may be a sweeping statement but i believe it is a powerful truth. A carefully planned wireless network will allow more children to benefit from ICT learning. It also gives teachers the freedom to incorporate ICT into more subjects and the flexibility to use more areas of the school for a wider range of purposes. Which is no bad thing considering the pressure many primary schools ar

Why do you need a wireless survey when buying a wireless solution?

Why do we carry out wireless surveys?   Cabler’s provide a complete range of services to organisations planning to implement wireless and mobile network solutions. The best piece of advice i can give you before you embark on your wireless adventure is to do some homework on the company or consultant you plan to work with. Ask for testimonials and case studies, these will always be provided by businesses with a proven track record. Unfortunately we visit too many organizations that have
