We have an odd quirk that is cause a head scratch. We have a custom desktop wallpaper that is applied by GPO. We used the same wallpaper and GPO settings when we used Windows 7 and never had the following problem. Our current version is Windows 10 1803 Education. When a computer first joins the domain the wallpaper is applied and sits happily forever. However, is a user manages to log in without a network connection or loses a network connection during a session the desktop for that user turns black. Once the network connection returns, even after a reboot etc. the wallpaper still stays black! The only way we can change this state is by deleting the profile of the effected user, which does cause irritation for the user, as they have hit save for every password they ever have used which they can no longer remember! Do any of you have any idea while this is happening or how we can resolve this? No amount of Googling is brings up sensible results. Cheers in advance.

Hi all, So.. some of us are still using versions of Windows 10 that don't support changing the login screen wallpaper. I have been tirelessly trying to find ways to change this wallpaper. Everything from reg keys to file replace policies to third party software. The closest I have gotten so far is using 'Windows 10 Login Image Changer' as it allows you to save the .pri file that contains the updated configuration with the new wallpaper... BUT, for some reason this .pri file only supports Windows 10 10240 (we are running 1511) so when you replace the file, the login screen breaks. If you use the software to replace the .pri file however it works fine, just not manually, so not sure on that one. The path to the file that contains the information is 'C:\Windows\SystemResources\Windows.Ui.Logon\' and then the 'Windows.Ui.Logon.pri' file is the one that needs editing. I am praying that somebody here knows more than I do and is able to edit/replace this file successfully without breaking the log in screen. If you do, the many wonders of a customisable login screen await you and me and many others will be very grateful. PLEASE HELP.

Hi. Got a confusing one for you now. Trying to setup BGinfo to show the computer name at the logon screen. I'm eventually going to set it up using a logon script, but now I'm just trying to test it out. What happens is: I run BGinfo from the command line using a modification of Michael's script: @ECHO OFF REM * Sets Logon Desktop Background * copy \\server\netlogon\BGINFO\BGINFO.EXE %SYSTEMROOT% /Y %SYSTEMROOT%\bginfo.exe /I"\\server\netlogon\bginfo\computer.bgi" /timer:0 /nolicprompt It runs, generates the bginfo.bmp and sets it as the background, but it is compleatly blank. It only has the green background we set, but no information, not even the static text I entered. I am very puzzelled by this one. Its obviously not a permissions issue, and the script is deffinately running because it creates the file. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, David

Play Justin Bieber records while you work. That way the wallpaper will hang itself.

Wondering if anyone can help me as this is driving me insane!! Using Group Policy i've applied a nice new background to the staff logon, however the background image/colour appears through on the icon words on the desktop making the image look rubbish! Is there a way to stop this and make it transparent? Ive tried BMP and JPG images and im running out of ideas! Ive logged in locally and tried it and it works fine so its a GPO issue somewhere I guess. To do this normally it would be the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" setting in performance options, this is on so I have no idea what im doing wrong. If someone has a wallpaper applied through AD out there and it works without this issue can you tell me what your setting are.... please help! Thanks Steve

Afternoon all, hopefully this will solve a lot of your headaches and answer two common Mac questions. Problem - Desktop wallpaper being centrally managed and dock showing question marks rather than network shares. Remedy: So, the problem with setting your desktop wallpaper on a networked Mac running Yosemite and above is that the network shared is mapped AFTER the preference kicks in to set the wallpaper. To fix this, I created the desktop.jpg and placed it in a network location which all users have read access to. I then created a automator script which takes an input (the full path of the desktop.jpg) and then sets the wallpaper. This script has a 2 second pause at the start to ensure it runs after network connections have occurred. I made a local folder on the client mac named "Scripts", set the rights to everyone read only and put the automator app in there (ensure the automator app has read access for all network users or you may get an access denied icon displaying for other users). Use profile manager to set a "launch at login" item to point at the script. Ensure "desktop lock picture" is OFF to allow the script to set the wallpaper. This flag is set under "restrictions" within Profile manager. Happy days. The second common question is about having network shares on the dock. Again, network shares are connected AFTER the dock settings, so the dock doesn't know where to look and unfortunately doesn't connect to the network shares after clicking the question mark. Same fix really, make an automator app to kill the dock after a 2 second pause. Add script to profile manager the same way as before. screen shots and example automator files attached (note, the paths in the automator script obviously relate to my place of work - just change the paths to match you needs). cheers WallpaperAndDockAps.zip

So what has/is everyone doing/done to make the place more christmasy? We've added a pretty desktop background and a few decorations in the office.

Hi, Could anyone advise me on the best way to have your wallpaper automatically resize depending on size of screen? I’m building a base image for our student labs, but I don’t want the user to be able to change the wallpaper. I’ve used GBinfo with WinXP in the past, but I’m sure it was adding to the login times, which I’d rather avoid. Thanks for your help, Rob

Not a problem, just a bit odd. This is my GMail background today: Finger/other blocking the lens, perhaps. Browser/OS:

I'm experiencing some issues with wallpapers on Windows 7 clients on Server 2008 domains. At one school I am seeing different wallpapers for different users of the same type (ie pupils) and I'm not sure why that would be. Someone suggested to me that it is because the user profile takes the wallpaper of the first machine the user logs into; ie if the user, for some reason, logs into the Server then it takes the server wallpaper as its own. Some users have Windows 7 wallpaper, some have black backgrounds. At another school I'm seeing a different wallpaper for the same user on different machines; on one I see the Windows 7 blue wallpaper, on another I see a completely black wallpaper. I guess it's not a huge deal but I'm a little concerned that this is a symptom of something else I need to be worried about. Is there an easy group policy method of forcing the wallpaper to something specific; ie the Windows 7 wallpaper? Thanks, Paul.
