Check the times on the folder redirection events - if they're well before the second notification, it may not be that that's slowing down. Do you do any printer mapping?

Not so much a gift but... Our first wedding anniversary was in December last year, the day before we both realised we hadn't got gifts or cards for each other. We decided that we didn't need/couldn't really afford gifts, but bought each other a card whilst in Asda shopping (cards placed face down in trolley so we couldn't see the other's card). They're still some where in the house, unwritten and ungiven, but at least we've got cards for next year!

We use VMAccess (Visitor Management, ID Cards, from Visitor Management Limited UK) - they also do a visitor management system, which means our access control and visitor management are integrated.

No technicians placed in rooms. We try to respond either remotely or in person to issues reported during lessons. We've educated our IT teachers on some of the simple problem solving bits (if computer says domain not available, check network lead as some little darling has pulled it out, check leads for non-working keyboard/mouse). We also leave a spare mouse with the teacher in case of ones being removed. Our main bookable IT suite is just off our office, so we do get some requests when that's in use - but will only really go out if we can't solve remotely and only if we have time to deal at that moment.

From the sounds of it it doesn't work fine (link speed drops to 10Mb). Are there any possible sources of electrical interference near the cable run (ie is there anything that's been added nearby over Christmas?)? I'm assuming the extender doesn't make a difference? If there's electrical interference, the extender would also repeat/amplify any interference on the cable.

I can't say I've ever heard of launch.exe - I'd suggest running regedit or msconfig and having a look for launch.exe (find in regedit) to see if there's any sign of what's loading it. You're probably going to struggle to uninstall the drivers (I think they may be inbuilt into windows) however, you could try uninstalling the device, rebooting and allowing windows to refind it (or force device manager to scan for new hardware). I wonder whether launch.exe is actually malware, may be worth running malware scans on the laptop (being a device used externally and essentially being unmanaged). Malware could also be a reason for drives not showing up. Have you checked device manager and computer management->disk management to see if the usb devices are being detected at that level? Not really viable with the amount of hills and distance between the station and Calverton. It's about 8 miles from the train station and going through Sherwood it's up, then down, then up then down, then up again through Arnold, then I'm fairly sure you'd hit a National speed limit road as well... or failing that, there's one heck of a hill heading up Mapperly top... Calverton Connection bus would be an option, seems a month's pass is £60 (with reduction for longer term), and only half hour journey (15min walk from station to bus stop). Other end, depends where in Brum...

Have you also ensured that domain computers are listed in security filtering for the GPO (assuming you've currently got that as a user group rather than authenticated users)? Best way to test out - GPresult/rsop it

@ZeroHour - that's exactly what we're planning to do, however I wasn't sure whether Windows XP clients would be supported by that (teacher laptops are in the process of being upgraded... but obtaining a laptop to do work on it reminds me of "cold dead fingers"). Interestingly, the x64 machines seem to suffer less with this issue.

In an English exam, what functionality of Word do they need to use which Wordpad doesn't offer. It will save you a lot of time trying to stop spell check, dictionary and thesaurus (and ensuring that all routes to those options are disabled) if you don't need to use Word. We did a controlled English assessment at the end of last year, Wordpad worked perfectly for what was needed. Cheers Will

I had this issue, seems to be related to HP drivers, most probably the UPD. I think what helped with ours was (on the print server) renaming cioum32.msi to cioum32.bak, creating a zero byte file as cioum32.msi (you may need to stop the print spooler whilst doing this) within c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3 Try mapping one of the ones which uses the inbuilt Windows driver and compare the logon times, may confirm if the above is where the issue lies. I looked into doing this for Office 2007 - easiest way in the end was to enforce use of Wordpad instead - are there any specific features of Word that are required or would Wordpad do the job (is it an English exam?)? Cheers Will

When I did a refresh of our server equipment I bought a tape library to do backups (I've since added in a NAS/ISCSI box to do D2D2T). After 18 months of use, the tape drive failed, for no reason - was working one day, powered the box off and on correctly (doing some major power system rearrangement), drive stopped working. Cost for a replacement drive - £1700! Slightly stupidly I hadn't looked at the length of warranty, but as it's enterprise equipment, I'd assumed 3 years, but it was only 1. We're currently doing D2D (to separate building) which is OK (some stability issues, but that may be due to cryptd on the NAS or the HDDs in the NAS), I'm looking to use Ahsay "offsite" backup software in future to backup to this NAS and then replicate to truely offsite (co-lo at LA datacentre). We can then provide offsite backup to primaries as well

Have you checked out train costs? Should be much less than £280 a month. Where in Nottingham (not necessarily school name, area would do so I can suggest how easy the trip from the station would be)? Cheers Will

Only resolution I could think of is to have two separate GPOs and use the GPO targetting for pupils/staff to do this - then stick the staff gpo at higher priority in group policy management. When you've got staff in the pupils group you're going to hit this issue - any reason for them being in this?

I don't think that any form of application virtualization would sort it. A 32 bit wrapper would need to create a virtual 16 bit subsystem, which as far as I'm aware there's nothing to do this. Unfortunately I think you're stuck with the TS option as being the best one. I'm not sure whether XP mode would work either (does Win7 x64 have XP mode X64 or XP mode 32 bit?), if XP mode is 32 bit virtualized system then that should do the job - or ANother virtualization jobby. What kind if licensing scheme do you have? Do you have desktop packs with CAL suites? The CAL suites tend to include RDS CALs, and then you'd just need to license Windows Server. Other thought - are there not updated version of the software which are 32 bit? We've had to take the line with some of our older software (ie 1998-2002 modified date) that there are updated versions and the departments will need to purchase it.

Have you got the GPO to "remove run from start menu" set? This has the effect to stop results occuring whether typed in the start menu search, or windows explorer address bar (gives a access to resource has been disallowed).

To be honest, when I was installing this for a friend a couple of weeks ago, I spotted the "mobile" thing - closer inspection then revealed it's Apple only (boo hiss). At some point I may look for alternatives for phones (blocking fb on on of their kids' phones would be very useful when they're meant to be revising!)

Only seems to be extended to iPhone/iPad/iPod rather than mobile in general.

Apologies for resurrecting old thread, but it's the same thing... What have people's experiences been with the install/upgrade of their router. Middle of December we had an engineer appear (unexpectedly) with our new router (BT had fortunately already been and sorted the circuit - scheduled work which dates had been discussed with me), confirgured it, plugged it into the new circuit and got nothing back from the other end. He then went off to a couple of other schools, came back later that day and tried again - but apparently there was a lot of configuration that still needed doing for us further back upstream... Slightly disappointed by that, but recevied a phone call the start of the next week to book an engineer in to complete the work. On the day of the work, emailed all staff to inform them that there would be a short network outage at some point during the day as we were moved across. About 10 mins after sending the email, got a call to say engineer not coming... And that's it. No further contact, no further engineer visits, still on old circuit and old router with new router in rack, powered on, connected to new circuit and, I assume, ready to go with a couple of changeover bits. Anyone else had issues like this? Anyone know who I could contact to find out what on earth is going on with the installation (tried the OCON team, and they've forwarded query to someone, but had no response)? Cheers Will
