Does OWA work successfully? If it does it would suggest MAPI issues (or RPC over HTTP depending on how you have Outlook->Exchange connection configured), if it doesn't, possible mailstore issues (or OWA not installed...). It sounds vaguely familiar as an issue... but I can't remember for definite if I hit this one (I don't recall 2007 issues, just 2003). Have you tried restarting services on the Exchange box, or look to enable MAPI logging on the Exchange box to see what's occuring. Cheers Will

It seems that the routers are improving in their performance capabilities, with increase in RAM and CPU speeds (older routers seem to be in the 125MHz range, newer ones around 400MHz, some even @680MHz), it may be that there may be another hardware solution (a nettop possibly), the thing to remember is it would just be 5-6 people normally accessing (Dansguardian specs 300Mhz for 50 users), and cost wise, they're selling the 400MHz routers at £40... if something could be made for £100 which would provide net access and restrict access to unsavoury content (possibly with a small subscription fee for blocklist updates) then I think it would be a winner. I don't have enough technical knowledge to be able to know for definite, but the idea was there for people to investigate! Same argument goes for young Jimmy borrowing the booze cupboard key, taking a copy then getting drunk when mum and dad go out... the idea is not to make it automatically impossible to get on to sites, but to provide a tool to make it damn difficult. There has to be some level of person involvement, this would just provide a technical tool to help in the fight.

It seems that some people have got DD-WRT and Dansguardian running successfully... however it probably doesn't have a particularly useful interface (and the firmaware may not be as stable as firmware specifically written for the device it's used on), and the interface of Smoothwall is relatively simple to use to control blocking (though some more simplification would probably help in this application). Packetprotector seems to be some way towards it but requires a USB drive (it may work without if you stop clamav, but it only runs on a limited number of routers). PiquABoo - I wonder how advanced the filtering was - my guess would be URL filtering (which still appears on some domestic routers - you can block certain URLs... blocked facebook on a Friend's network when their kids should have been doing work but were facebooking...), and not dynamic content type. Shame my current router isn't up to the task otherwise I'd try building packetprotector for that. If I can spare some cash to buy another router soon then I may buy one and see if I can get it working how I'd like. Even so... a joining forces of Smoothwall and one of the router manufacturers would probably provide a more stable and robust solution for mass sale!

I would suggest copying across to the new server - as you don't have a backup of the data, working on the original would be a little too risky in my eyes.

It's once again non technical people deciding what's technically possible. The scale of a system to handle this sort of thing would be immense (not to mention the administration/cost overhead). In my opinion the better option is education of parents in 2 respects - firstly so they can educate their kids about safe use of the internet and secondly education about tools they can use to help protect their kids (K9 for example, parental controls on games devices). The other thing I'd quite like to see developed is a very cut down version of smoothwall or similar - using the content filtering components only (ie no caching, no reporting, possibly short term logging) embedded onto a wireless router type device - this would (I think) be a very quick hit with security conscious parents - those of us with the know how can create a separate box for this, but having something a non-techy could fairly easily use would be a nice addition to the current market place.

It probably exists somewhere within Facebook's logging system, unless the person wants to involve the police there's nothing you can do. I believe there should have been a "report" button next to the comment as well as the delete - it may be a matter of training person B that this is the better button to press in the future. The only other thing may be if the person has email alerts turned on, they may still have a copy of the comment (or the fact that there was a post to their wall) within their mailbox. I've been doing some research recently and found 2 possible playout/automation systems - one created by the Student Radio station at Warwick Uni Radio Warwick - Digital Playout Software, and the other a quite sophisticated one called Rivendell Rivendell Project Home Page. Both are either opensource or free. I've been trying to work out the best input/output path to reduce the chances of silence being broadcast for long periods of time (with the Rivendell software you can route the output to an input on the soundcard, which would mean that you could use the input as a source for your external broadcast taking input from a desk, and when a certain amount of silence is detected you could force it to switch the stream to the output of the playout system [ie if a student forgets to put the computer fader up on the desk before leaving]). Seems that school radio is something being considered by a lot of schools currently.

Hi All, Just a bit of information (which took me a while to find out...). As part of Schools Agreement, if you have access to Software Assurance benefits you should have access to TechNet Plus. As part of this, you are able to access 2 complimentary support incidents, and then have reduced cost support after this. However, finding out how to access this took me ages (Volume licensing team seemed unaware). Secondary site mode sounds like the way you want to go (I was trying to do some investigation into Navaho TeamCAT but couldn't find anything to assist). Does Navaho also have the ability to rewrite addresses? We have a sort of similar situation with 2 Exchange organisations (one RBC, the other our own). For your situation, I'd look at the following: Set Exchange as Authoritative for domain Set Navaho to secondary site mode with smarthost to Exchange server That should allow external to send to navaho which then redirects on non-matched local to the Exchange server, and so Navaho users to send to exchange users as well. The interesting bit is the Exchange server to Navaho - as the Exchange server would be authoritative, it would reject any local recipient not in the Exchange organisation. This is where the rewrite and an Exchange routing agent would come in. The idea is: Exchange user sends email to [email protected] Exchange routing agent sees mail coming from local mailbox with @local.domain.com address and rewrites to @local.domain.com.false Email then routes out via SMTP to the Navaho Box Navaho box has @local.domain.com.false setup as a domain it handles, with a rule to rewrite to @local.domain.com - this bit I don't know if it's possible, can't find the relevant info on the Navaho Navaho box then processes the email as a local email If the user is non matched, then gets sent to Exchange box, which delivers locally if user exists (or rejects if they don't - this doesn't hit the routing agent as it's not from local mailbox) It seems a long way for Exchange to Exchange mail to go - but it also means that it hits any filtering you have on the Navaho box (which is why I looked into this for our exchange org). Some of my colleagues took it out and about on open days and freaked people out with it... including making it queue up for something... took people a while to realise there was a Darlek in the queue. Back on topic, there was stuff on this story in the Metro this morning, and some "computer scientist" made a comment that if he had a virus on a memory stick and put it in his mouth, he could make the claim of being virus infected... idiot. The whole point of the research is talking about chips and communication - looking at the real possibility of in the future medical equipment's communication potential (if you can create settings on a pacemaker wirelessly at the hospital [i think they already do this over a minute range], what else could someone do to a pacemaker outside of hospital). One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is that Reading Uni, in particular the group in which Mark Gasson (and Kevin Warwick) work, are heavily involved in medical implant research, including computer-neural interfacing, assistive technologies and a number of other areas which pass my mind, so they're fairly placed to make an assessment of the risks involved with such technologies. Yes, it's over sensationalised by saying it's a human computer virus infection, but what scientific "story" isn't.

As the LA have access to all traffic graphs, I would assume that they'll prioritise upgrades in the following order: Organisations who are moving to sharing network connection with another who already have high usage (will be shown on cacti) Organisations who are moving to sharing network connection with another Organisations with high usage (but who aren't being joined with another, so could be argued that their bandwidth requirements should not increase) Others I think that some connections will be upgraded before March 2011, maybe even on move across, but it very much will depend on the speed at which connections are moved over. I would think that as combining the connection for multiple organizations like in your situation will be some significant work (routing, vlans [or physically separate router interfaces], physical network links to other organizations), they will look to also include the upgrade at this point (otherwise they'll be coming in twice for 1 places connection). It may be worth talking to the powers that be specifically about your situation and see if they have any plans in place. Cheers Will

4oD is doing adverts only (doing "An error occurred..." once that's done, same as robk is seeing. Difficult to define filtering level we're on (have it to block profanity, pornography and criminal skills and I think that's about it as we have in house filtering).

We're going to be looking at the SESP licensing this year, which seems to be what Microsoft are trying to combat the issues people had with thin clients. http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/schools/software-licensing/types-of-educational-licence/SESP-agreement/default.aspx. From what I understand, you can license bits of the school for bits of licensing (so only as many RDS CALs as needed for devices accessing TS, only as many Desktop licenses as required for fat clients). However, there doesn't seem to be mention of licensing Office separately (which you'd probably need for machines accessing the TS). May be another option to ask your licensing supplier about.

Has anyone got BIS working with EMBC's exchange server, I tried a little while ago with a teacher's blackberry but had no luck. I've now got a couple of other teachers asking, so was wondering if anyone had managed, and what details they've used. I think I've got the correct settings (from memory of what you should put in from back when I did some major exchange admin), but they don't seem to work. May be a mixture of networks, and some seem not to allow use of the web interface, just the on phone version of BIS setup. Cheers Will

I would suggest at present to use what duncane has suggested, and also check out the community site and see if there's a feature request, vote it up if there is one, and create a new request if there isn't. The other option at present is to get your favourite wiki software setup on another server and embed the page into a frog widget. Cheers Will

Hi Bill, It's good to know that you've appointed a Customer Service manager, communication is an area where I have found Securus to be lacking, be it a response to a support email where I had stated I had looked in the manual that told me to look in the manual and then call if it wasn't clear (I had asked for an example of management groups with regards to staff and student users), or the communication 1 month before release of NG that there was a new version of Securus to be released (only a couple of months after purchasing Securus in the first place). As Securus was a "to be bought this financial year" project, we could have held off til February to purchase if we'd known about the new version - looking through your site (including the customer support section) I can't see any news item regarding the new version. I do fully understand where you're coming from about needing some income to fund the development, and understand that it would always be a major development as the move from proprietary OS with propriertary hardware to more mainstream OS and hardware was made, I just hope that now this has occured future development will lean more towards Smoothwall's progression. I hope that you can also understand it's very difficult to have a situation where you would like to have the best solution, and where you do have it for a couple of months, then find out that to have the best solution it's going to cost you another few hundred quid to upgrade after paying out a significant sum to get what was the best solution a couple of months ago (apologies for the cyclical nature of the sentence). Hi Bill, Thanks for the reply... I find this part of your comment the most interesting... I thought that the Annual Support and Maintenance covered the support work, and surely any money from people purchasing Securus after you stopped developing the previous version (which I assume you must have done, considering we haven't seen any developments since we purchased in October, and the most recent V6 is from June 2009 according to your customer site) must go towards the development costs of NG. I'm also a little concerned by the tone of the comment, but I'll let that pass this morning. Regards Will
