If you only want email, then BIS should be enabled, and this should be fairly easy to setup, possibly on the phone or through a web interface, who's the phone provider? BIS will be able to access the account through OWA, or POP3 if you wanted, so it's just a matter of getting into the right settings. Cheers Will

Check that the HT has BES (Blackberry Enterprise Service) enabled on his contract. Most Blackberry consumer contracts will be BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) enabled only, and BES is an extra monthly fee. BIS will allow you to go onto a web interface (there may be a link on the phone as well), and setup a connection to allow mail to be delivered to the device, unfortunately this will not allow for full sync, or for calendar/contacts sync. I worked with Exchange and BES in a business environment for a year, and got to know a fair few of the wonders involved, so if there's any other questions, let me know. Cheers Will

OK, so as you'll probably know from previous posts, I'm adding a TS environment to our network. I've also (recently recently) added a Tea4Cups/Pykota/Cups printserver to the network, with confirmation of jobs turned on. Therefore, I've got Pykoticon starting up on all the Windows machines at logon to allow this. Has anyone got pykoticon on a TS environment? If I've assumed correctly, it probably shouldn't work correctly as it uses a specific port on the client machine (ie the TS server), so when a new client runs the program, the port may shift to that, or be kept by the original copy, and the second won't receive communication. I've coded a little thing in VB that will connect to the postgresql DB to show the balance of the account, but I'll need to turn off the confirmation if I do use that. Any clues gratefully received. Terminal servers in separate OU in Active Directory, possibly separate OU/GPO for Fat clients - setup a User Policy Loopback on the Computer configuration of GPO, then setup different desktop and start menu redirection for each GPO. I'm planning to have mandatory profiles for students (and remove ranger in the not too distant future), and have roaming profiles for staff, storing their desktop bits in a folder within their my docs (so they can add stuff to the desktop, and not cause insane profile size... my staff like to leave videos on their desktop, or folders...), and redirect desktop to there. Other GPO settings will allow all user's desktop and start menu to show up, so for my staff, on their laptops, I will let them just have their current start menu, on the TS I'll be setting them to a standard start menu. Need to finish fully testing this, and gradually start moving staff onto the system after the summer, but I think it should balance network speed and give the user's a more consistent environment.

Bit overkill to move one file, but it's the first step towards merging networks I would assume that teachers currently use laptops on the Admin network to facilitate MIS, so how do they access data on the teaching network (like pupil resources, teaching resources etc)? Sticking this trust in place would mean that you could start to allow them access to these, they will see the benefit of merging the networks, as long as you explain that the speed may be reduced due to the way it's done. We moved all our teachers laptops onto the teaching network, with trust to the admin network so that they could get on SIMs. We've now pretty much finished with moving all the other machines off the admin domain, so that will be shut down shortly, and the response that teachers gave to being able to access all the resources they need has been highly encouraging! Find yourself a couple of plyable teachers to use as guinea pigs, and the rest will follow when the guinea pigs start talking to other staff about what they can do! Cheers Will

The way I've got round this is by using a specified RDP file, and passing a Username in this (just the domain name followed by \ seems to work). This is going to a Server 2008 TS, so not sure whether the behaviour would be different on 2003. If you open an rdp file in notepad, then the line you want is something similar (just substitute your domain in): username:s:domain\

Right, this is a kind of Thin Client / RDP question, so apologies if this is not quite the right place. I've got one of the above units on demo, and it's quite nice. I'm just having a little difficulty setting it up as I'd like, so I'm wondering if A) anyone can solve the issue below, B) anyone can suggest another way of doing this full stop (with the same hardware/software). I've currently got the machine auto logging on with a custom shell, which is a script that runs MSTSC with a specified .rdp file (with some bits to stop the annoying prelogon screen authentication bit, which would not doubt confuse our kids and staff). If MSTSC is closed (it if logged out, or cancelled before logon) the script restarts and reconnects, taking it back to the TS logon screen. This is fairly close to how I think it should work. There's one niggling thing - MSTSC will close if you don't logon to the TS within a certain amount of time. I can't find anywhere to change this time (spent a few hours googling yesterday, so getting on with PBX devel today). MSTSC then restarts and goes back to the logon for the TS, however, this activity would stop the screens going into power saving, so will reduce the power savings made using TC (and it's bloody annoying!). I've just put in for an Axel demo unit, and from the looks of it, that's completely different, so will be interesting to see how that behaves, but I'd still like to get XPe way working, just incase I have to go with those at some point. Also on a side point, does thinstation/A.N.Other linux distro cope well with this (thinking of recycling some of our older boxes [read PIII] to be thin clients in the odd classroom). Cheers Will

Hi, I discovered that I had this issue today, after a slight knock out yesterday. Check your event logs for NTFRS issues, use the event log number to search for resolutions. this sorted my issue out. If you do find any NTFRS warnings/errors, and need any pointers, post and I'll see if they're the same as mine. If nothing simple comes up from the searches, then rebuild would be the best solution. There used to be a tool for Exchange 2003 called eseutil that would allow you to run repair on a database, and merge transaction logs back in if you need to. If you have a the backup of the database, and can find the transaction logs until the server went down, that may sort you out. - always try on a copy of the database files and transaction logs just in case. HodgeHi, I'm currently implementing an Asterisk VoIP system within our school. There are several bits you will need to consider: Outbound connectivity (as previously mentioned) - we're looking at using an IAX2 trunk to gradwell, which will fail over to a single analogue line in reception if the Net connection/PBX goes down - could do a single analogue line into PBX, but if PBX goes down, then all phone lines lost. Remember to consider the bandwidth implication of VoIP and the other internet usage (maybe an onsite proxy with limited bandwidth - limit to say 2Mb under your net connection), and remember QoS Phones - Are you going to be purely using wired phones? An idea we have here is for our site manager, myself, my tech, first aid, and senior management to have wireless phones (for several reasons, one of which being an "emergency line" to senior management to deal with classroom issues). We're also looking at soft phones on teacher's laptops so that they can phone this emergency line if they need it. Internal network - QoS, bandwidth, PoE, physical ports available, wireless? Although there seem to be a lot of points there, it's quite easy to setup these things. There are a few ready to run Asterisk distributions, which may help you evaluate asterisk a litte (just using soft phones for it here atm until I've tested some inbound calls). Check out Trixbox and AsteriskNow. Any questions and I'll do my best to answer them, or google them, there's plenty of info on asterisk about!

Hi, According to Samba documentation, it should be possible to use NT ACLs on printers... I've tried everything I can think of, but have no luck. I open up my print server from a windows client, open printer properties, and change the security to deny another user... however, I can then still access the printer from that other user. Has anyone got this working before, or does anyone have any ideas how to resolve it. I'm basically trying to have 1 printserver for the school but block access to certain printers, so teachers/students can't print to the admin printers. Hi All, Having had some issues/reservations about Ranger Migrate, I've spent the morning (whilst doing other things) putting a script together to copy home directory information from one server to another, and change mapping in AD. It is a very simple script, but may prove a good base for others wanting to do similar things. Our home directories are all named the same as the user, so this was written to work with that fact. Command line should be: movehome.vbs /source: /destination: Currently I send the destination path with a \ at the end (due to not having the energy today to code checks for the \ or directory creation). This is used in the home directory, and all home directories are under one root share (instead of indiviual shares). Any comments welcome (would be quite happy if someone said "there's a tool that will do that for you", but I haven't spotted on whilst browsing over the past couple of days! movehome.vbs

Do you notice the PSU fan stopping and starting when it reboots (ie is it doing full power off then back on), or anything else to suggest full power cycle rather than soft? If it does, and you are technically and electrically competent (covering my rear end!), and you are willing to take the risk yourself, you could try shorting pins on the atx power lead to see whether the PSU runs fine on it's own. A quick google search will show you how, I have done several times, and am still alive/uninjured from doing so. The other option is to swap the PSU out with another, and test that way (I'd suggest sticking the problem PSU in another system, but if there's a problem with it, it may cause some damage to the other system). My first instincts would say the PSU isn't the problem. If you remove all components from the motherboard, including front panel connectors (just leave power and speaker connected), then build up from there through the POST beeps, you may be able to determine what is causing the issue.

The only thing about using a HTTP POST method is I would be a little worried about the transmission of personal data (phone numbers), and the username and password through unencrypted means. Before further consideration of this, I'll have to check with them as to whether they can do SSL.

Glad you got it sorted. I was just about to check that the keyboard keys weren't moving and making you type the incorrect password as that was the only other solution I could see!

If there's no firewall in place, it would suggest that the moodle user added to the database server is allowed from local only. Take a look at the SQL Grant statement (can't remember the syntax, sorry), and ensure that you grant privileges for the moodle user at another IP (I think you can specify only the IP of the connecting machine, ie the webserver, if not, specify from all then lock down with firewall to only allow MySQL connections from the webserver IP). I tend to use phpmyadmin for a lot of my DB admin, means that I don't have to remember syntax... hence why I don't remember the GRANT statement!

The Janet system sounds interestingly useful... and there are APIs for all sorts of programming languages, so surely that plus the SIMs third party SDK should allow for someone to program something for sims directly (I may look into it myself if I get time). But the CSV file option looks like a good way to do it as well. There doesn't seem to be all that much info about the control panel side of things though, is it good?

What's hard drive activity like? If you have a HDD activity light, is it on constant, or flicking rapidly?
