1. What limitations are you talking about? 2. what version of exch are you using? 3. What are your requirements?

1.There are server side rules in addition to client side rules. I suspect at this stage, this seems to be the most logical answer. 2. You've checked the obvious places except the rules, I know this may be an issue but I'd get director approval to check out the rules. 3, It's causing issues for you now and it's uses exch resources, should the email be forwarded on or not? Is this a risk ? Data breach? etc.. etc... 4. Could also create a mail look and bring you exch server down,. I'd check.

1. Yes it would be huge, but this all depends on the number of mailboxes you will journal and if you will journal all internal and/or external emails. 2. What you could do is, journal all mailboxes that you need to, then monitor size over months, say every 3 months, and you can backup (which I assume you are already doing), Then delete that journal mailbox and create a new one. This was you can reclaim the space back and you will have that on your backups should you need to do a restores. 3. Also, it depends on the number of email sent/receievd per mailbox etc.... 4. So create a mailbox, you may not want to do this on the same store as your other mailboxes, just create another database for it if you wish, this way it will be easier to manage. (Backup/Restore/Maintain Size/Not effect on your otherrs users should you happend to forget to backup for months etc...) Sukh

Connecting Remotely through proxy
sukh replied to beany1's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
What was you trying to do with exch, you can always use RPC over HTTP which uses 443 which would probably be open anyway. -
Good point, it seems like the the deleted items seems to be items deleted from mailboxes and not the dumpster, therefore check that settings, I think on 2003 the default is either 14 or 30 days. Also, you might want to consider using a Mailbox Manager Policy to do this deleting of emails on a schedules basis on age or size etc... If you need the data for legal reasons then you cant, but then you should look at an archiving solution, either in house or in the cloude. Also, some user education would be good too, and maybe introduce storage quotas on mailboxes. I really do recommend that you upgrade to 2010. Sukh

Blocking Outside Email through Exchange Server 2003
sukh replied to MaceZ4's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
1. Exch 2003 isnt as intelligent as 2007/2010. Natively I cant see how you could do this. If you block at the Exch level then all emails will be bloced. 2. Upgrade to 2010, it's about time. 3. If not why not just use Outlook rule to permenently delete the email. 4. Unless you have some sort of gateway, you may be able to stop it there. Sukh -

1. Ask the sender to send the email to another live@edu user, is it still the same 2. Send to another external accocunt such as google, hotmail, is it still the same, rule of live@edu and see if it's an issue at the sender end of receiver end. 3. Do test doing the same message, I assume you can reproduce the issue. Sukh

1. smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net host, is this your or your ISP's 2. Have you allowed moddle to relay off this host? 3. Does it require authentication and is the authentication type correct? 4. Check the logs on smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net and see what SMTP logs are saying. Sukh

Actually STD has a 75GB limit with SP2 installed and Ent has 16TB. White space would be in the edb file which exch will use. Check your event viewer for 1221 which will show you how much white space you have and how much you can have back if you perform a offline defrag. Personally, I would not do a defrag as most take alot of time and fail.

1. what does it show on the GAL 2. Are these 2 smtp addresses assigned to assigned to different mailboxes? the same? DL? 3. Is it only this one users who sees this for this smtp address or all users?

Exchange 2007 to 2010 upgrade... im a bit wary of it
sukh replied to timbo343's topic in Enterprise Software
1. It is recommened to use at least Outlook 2007/2010 with exch 2007/2010. You'll be impressed with the performance when you upgrade, in particular cache mode. It's different with Outlook 2003 comapred with 2007/2010. -
1. No it's not extreme for a user, I've had to do this in the past for a few users 3-4 and it doesnt take too long. 2. Does depend on the content, number of mail items, size of your edb but I'm sure it will be quick. To give you an idea, it took about 4 hours for about 300 users whose mailbox size was on average 500MB. 3. Do it in the evening or the weeked and will be ready for the next day. Exchange 2007 to 2010 upgrade... im a bit wary of it
sukh replied to timbo343's topic in Enterprise Software
"Maybe im a bit wary as we are still on Outlook 2003 as it needs is settings re-configuring but 2007 and 2010 "should" pick the new server up without any problems.. Maybe ill just give the mail server a new name and have done... I mean, the staff get their homepage as their mailbox and for those that don't they have a favourite so they don't really need to know the name of the server." 1.Outlook 2007 and above will use autodiscover and setup the profile automatically. Internal clients use the SCP to discover autodiscover so it WILL work. 2. Why do you want to keep the server name the same? 3. When you install exch 2010, make sure you create a CAS array, even if you have one CAS server, and set thin on the DB, otherwise you will have issue amedning the Outlook profile later should you wish to use a CAS array. -
1. Where have you already checked? 2. Check the user account in AD and look at the delivery restrictions on the exch tab 3. Login to the actual mailbox and check for rules. 4. Check messgae headers of a messaghe which has been forwarded.

Exchange 2007 freezes when replying to emails

1. As your using exch 2007 youre limited to what you can do, i.e archiving is out of the picture already, natibely exch 2007 doesnt offer this. 2. You mentioned that staff are required to keep certain documents. Now youre in luck, for this you can use journaling. What you need to decide is if you want to keep this data onsite in exch or if you want to journal this data off to the cloud for a fee. 3. There are pros and cons for botg. With the cloud, it will probably cost a little more but you'll have benefits such as it's all managed for you, will be on enterprise infrastructure (depending on who you choose), you dont need to worry about backups for journal mailbox etc.. 4. Keep the journal mailbox in house, then all you really got to worry about is storage. If your establishment has a defined compliance, i.e you mention until 30, then you need to make sure that you have the right amount of storage to store that. Although if you get it wrong, it shouldn't matter as you can easily add more storage to exch 2007 and have multiple journal mailboxes, or you could move the jpounal mailbox to a larger store. 5. To set journaling on exch it wont take you more than 20 minutes, if you decide to journal inhouse or in the cloud, 6. Why do you want a Exch consultant, by all means hire me if you want but I'll be done on 20 :-)

Exchange 2007 freezes when replying to emails
sukh replied to Altyboys's topic in Enterprise Software
1.Then your issue is more towards the client end and not exchange itself. As it happends with Access too, I'd be inclined to focu on that. 2. If you have a standard images, I'd build a new PC and test that again. 3. If the issue still remanins, I'd build a vanilla versions and test. 4. Try in safe mode and see what happens, disabled add0ins etc...however, as it happends with Access this seems more of an app issues. -
1. I would be very careful when introducing exch 2010 then removing agian for testing purposes. 2. I would create an isolated lab env and test their. 3. Installing exch 2010 will make changes to your AD which is fine, however, when you come to remove exch 2010, although it can be straight forward it may have issues. 4. For testing purposes, and to only play around with exch 2010, create a lab env. 5.To test most functionality, you reallly need to a mirror env so you can play around with as it would live on your prod network.
