On a related note which anyone googling the error message "SIMS.ini Problem" to get to this page may need to know ... teachers or indeed anyone else who needs to use/autoupdate SIMS on a CC3 system using their packages will need to be a member of "??? Management Information Systems". Permissions have been built into the RM supplied packages to allow them to access certain files and folders.

There's a fix which is needed in some cases, where some packages are dependent on "Windows Installer 3.1" being installed and the CC3 SP3 install is causing an issue, I believe the fix may be to add the dependency into the .ini file for the CC3 SP3 for Windows Installer 3.1. There is a TEC article for this. edit: TEC1677288, and TEC1675386 may be of interest.

We've had a similar experience but with more success, we've had users created in our domain and pointed their home folders in AD to another server on another domain on another site with complete success ... I suspect the difference may be down to permissions, I had rights as an admin on both domains and it asked about granting permissions to our domain to the location on the other but once that was done it has worked perfectly well. http://www.kingdomain.net/CC3HomeFolder.png

I have two domains, one is a Linux hosting package which allows me unlimited outward facing public forwarder addresses and then I have another e-Mail hosting package which has better e-Mail facilities which everything gets forwarded to from the public facing domain ... I then create a new e-Mail address for anyone I deal with which is unique to them, it allows me to identify any 'leaks' and close them without exposing my 'proper' e-Mail address ... I then use Virtual Identity in Thunderbird to ensure that anything I send out at least gives the impression that it is coming from the outward facing address unique to that recipient (although if they were to look through the headers they would discover my deception). Admittedly it's slightly OTT, but it serves a purpose.

On the whole found them to be reasonable but not exceptional for their availability, my personal biggest bugbear was that on mice with the side buttons (which are almost impossible not to touch at some point during a test) whenever the side button is pressed the test went to a white screen and the test need to be restarted. Once some pupils realised this they had to chance to waste multiple lessons sitting these tests it was rife ... we ended up finding old two button mice for the test rooms.

Build up an FAQ for each of their commonly repeated issues to save you retyping the advice each time, it may not cure them but it may make your life easier in dealing with them Offer them dedicated training time outside of their normal working hours ... the offer of training usually makes them think twice ... don't know why.

My wife and I went to see Ed Byrne for our first wedding anniversary, as part of his routine he talks about being married for 7 months and asked the audience of about two thousand people if anyone had been married in the last twelve months. Thinking that we would be among many others we cheered raucously, only to realise that we were the only ones ... we did end up have a very nice chat with him as a result. He did seem bemused that we come to see a comedian for a wedding anniversary but the conversation tha followed was brilliant.

My experience with KLite and Windows Movie Maker was a mixed bag, on the plus side the students suddenly could draw on a huge range of sources for their video work, the down side was that WMM became hideously unstable (this was about 10 versions of Klite ago though), be very selective about what you allow KLite to install, the collection of codec seem fine for playback but less suitable for the editing process that WMM puts them through, install just the bare minimum and test it vigourously, if you do find that there is a potential issue with a particular codec then you can disable it within WMM (Tools - Options - Compatibility?), my personal bug bear was some sound files or the audio of some video as handled by FFDShow, but that may have been improved since.

Slightly off the original topic ... Vanilla can be made much more manageable with the right selection of tools, one which came to light for me recently was by RES Software which gave a very nice method of desktop control, I was quite impressed with the demo which I saw.

I'm afraid that I found no way or redirecting the "local settings" to something which will roam with the profile, and I did spend some considerable time researching this, although someone may know better.

The problem that I found was that the settings (predominately the "collections" that the user created) were written to a local settings location and therefore remain on the workstation and don't (and can't) roam around with the user, I did consider writing a script which copied it out on log off and back in on log in but RM refused to support that option. We basically told the kids to save each project and all it's associated files/collection (movie clips, still images, audio) in a single folder for each project and that meant that recreating the collection was much simpler just a couple of clicks each time, instead of going off to hunt down the files repeatedly, but it did mean that having a shared resource of clips and the associated savings in disk space were negated. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Windows-Movie-Maker-collections-frequently-asked-questions

Historically we have a mixture of just numbers, numbers with the room number of the associated patch cabinet, and some which extend that to include the patch within that patch cabinet. My preferred option and the one we plan to implement in our new build will certainly be "location of patch cabinet""patch panel""port number" as described above

I've done it in the past, but I just can't remember how, the attached file (with the appropriate video in the correct location) goes some of the way, in fact I even worked out how to play and pause from controls on the same page. Maybe you can work out what I did from the file? edit: sorry, just re-read your post, I don't know of a way to embed it, I believe my approach points to a file in a known location example of embedded video.ppt
