As long as the run length isn't too long it should work.
  3. We use GPP and loop back processing instead of GPO and use it on top level computer OUs for most standard printers (follow you), room level computer OUs for local room printers, for printers for individuals regardless of location I apply directly without loopback (which generally works with a few exceptions which I'm investigating at the moment). edit : I can layer printers by merging each loopback, and I tend to remove everything and then re-attach to get rid of the accumulation of printers that staff build up while moving around. We also set default printers through that mechanism.
  4. Check the system time is close to the domain time
  5. My colleague is trying to deploy the certificate from the Smoothwall from the Mac Server, but in the section where he is trying to add it the interface is insisting the private key file is dragged and dropped over before the certificate file is dragged over. Has anyone else tried to deploy the certificate from the Mac Server in their network, or is there a preferred and known working method of deploying it?
  6. Very thorough, very paperwork heavy, but very satisfied with the results (especially as the builder paid for them)
  7. We had a similar issue with our builders and an incredibly high attrition rate on our SAN HDDs as a result ... the builder tried to send in a bloke with a Henry hoover to clean and we sent them away, we then arranged our own with IT Cleaning . Note : ours included cleaning the internals of the equipment.
  8. We had to ensure that, as there was no opportunity for the user to type in credentials, all the necessary repositories had to be put into Authentication Exception on our filtering device
  9. Due to the movement of Google towards HTTPS only searches we are going to have to move towards the interception, inspection and filtering of HTTPS traffic, technically this is perfectly within our abilities due to our SmoothWall, however given the glaring warning on the appropriate configuration page "WARNING: Local laws may require that you warn your users before decrypting and inspecting HTTPS data. It is recommended that you check with legal representation before setting this option to "Never".". Are any EduGeekers aware of any UK legislation which might affect our choice to carry out this style of filtering?
  10. By that are we talking about offline files?
  11. Our laptops are built to the network, they operate on our wireless with full access to their user areas while within our walls. At home they used a cached roaming profile to allow them to operate at home and they can reach their home folders indirectly through a web-based portal, or they can use USB devices to shuffle work around and work at home. When a member of staff opens up the webmail and tries to attach a file from a USB device the dialog box takes ages to respond. My assumption is that it is trying and failing to access their home folder as the last place they probably uploaded from, once it gives up and the user is given the chance to acknowledge an error message it then proceed to pause again for a long time, possibly while trying to reach a local folder which is next on its list on the local hard drive to which the staff do not have access, before finally giving up and giving them a chance to select the USB drive. This could be frustrating as a one off provided it remembered that the USB was the last thing used and go straight there next time, but it doesn't, even more annoyingly it repeats this process for each e-Mail for which an attachment is used. This is roughly quadrupling the time it takes to carry out very simple tasks. Any thoughts on overriding the order in which it offers the locations up in the dialog box, i.e. force it to go to the top level 'Computer' each time, or reducing the time outs so that it gives up faster? Any other suggestions or approaches would be appreciated. Regards Rob 'CyberDrac' King
  12. The older version of MovieMaker (2.6?) always saved the project information to the local profile which didn't get copied back to the server, unless they sat at the same machine they 'lost' their files and had to re-associate them. As this is a piece of software designed for home use I was told Microsoft were unlikely to change that behaviour.
  13. In case you hadn't spotted the requirement, I believe Python apparently only works properly with paths that have no spaces, for example "c:\python34" for my Python 3.4 install, this of course may be a fallacy, but mine works. If you need an alternative IDE, NetBeans 8.0.2 has an optional plugin named "Python4NetBeans" which works well enough and also means our student can use the same environment to write Java. Caveats include, one of the parts of the plugin throws an error on install but can be ignored (i.e. not installed), there is no way I have found of doing this remotely, and you must change a setting to install plugins into a shared location for all users to have access. So, it sounds like a bit of a hassle and it is, but it is working.
  14. As I've said previously (which given that someone was talking about providing the invigilator machine name as an IP) DNS is vital, "ipconfig /registerdns" on each of the student machines immediately prior to trying to connect (we use Impero to achieve this) saved us from exactly this scenario.
  15. Please note that the following command line works with version 11.x of the software ... "c:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\Education Software\smartboardservice.exe" -d ... however if you are operating on v12 of the drivers you will need to be aware that the path has changed ... "c:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Drivers\smartboardservice.exe" -d ... also the floating tools, previously launched through ... "c:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\Education Software\smartboardtools.exe" ... is now available at ... "c:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Drivers\Floating Tools.exe"

  18. I think the question was more ... "are you permitted to sell an item purchased by a school onwards to a private individual" ... we had a similar situation when emptying an old site of kit, we were obliged to offer it to other education establishments, feeder schools and other secondary schools before offering it to private individuals

  22. Just fancied a chat with a Google person who understands their product line so that I could be sure that we were approaching it from the right angle, in retrospect I suspect that I'm probably getting equally good advice here. Rather scared of taking the plunge and just needed the reassurance rather than anything else, it doesn't help that it looks like someone has already tried signing up the domain for another Google service and we'll have to jump through hoops to use our existing domain.
  23. I tried to contact Google through their contact form, however it requires a 'State' but doesn't list any States if you select United Kingdom as your country and so won't send it off!
