  1. There is no such thing as serverless in a school yet until some of the exam stuff goes cloud. Ultimately you're just paying to use someone else's server My other bits are just a situational thing to do with a new school build. There are still some function you need to run off a local machine. I'm just trying to find what i need for the local machine to save me a bit of future hassle. Wonder if i can just buy a NUC or two
  2. Hi, I'm serverless which just means i don't need massive servers but i do need to have a few instances of Server to run some items i need to run. These are mostly just software that aren't currently cloud based. I need some advise on what to buy. Can i just get low profile PCs? is it easier to just buy a low speed server? So we have some exam stuff, A Pearsons thing and a business exam thing. I have a little account management tool thing for accounts - Locker, soon to change to salamandersoft I have DHCP, DNS and AD on a server still. We're currently having a new school built at which point i plan to move the DHCP to the core switch. I should be able to drop AD. I'm guessing i need server to manage DNS? I need to do a bit more research for DNS Ubiquiti control software that will drop with the new build. Ab tutor thing that i might drop as we're eyeing up cloud alternatives like impero. Maybe a local share for quick IT access to files, scripts etc That's about it. In the end it will have 3-4 bits of software and maybe DNS.
  3. I got it working in the end following this, took a couple attempts but it did the trick How to Put the iPad in DFU Mode if it has a Home Button If you have an older version of the iPad that has a Home button, then follow these steps for DFU restore mode. Plug your iPad into a computer with the USB cable and launch iTunes. Turn off the iPad if you haven’t done that yet. Press and hold your On/Off button for 3 seconds. When a Slide to Power Off slider appears, swipe it to the right. Press and hold the device’s Top button for 3 seconds. Press and hold your Home button while still holding the Top button. Hold both buttons together for 10 seconds. Let go of your On/Off button, but keep holding your Home button for an additional 5 seconds. If you see a screen that says Plug Into iTunes, then you have not done the maneuver correctly. You’ll need to try it again. If the screen stays black, then your iPad is now in DFU restore mode. You should now be able to restore your device.
  4. that didn't work, it just loops. I managed to track down the student that had it last and she unlocked it for me. Still doesn't go into recovery even after a reset using configurator on the iMac
  5. I power off, hold down the home button and plug the cable in. Its powers and the recovery screen flicks on but just goes off and the iPad reboots to loop back round endlessly unless i release the home button. I don't know the passcodes. They're managed with intune but i can't get them connected to the wireless to remove the passcodes to reset. Any advice? Thanks
  6. Fantastic! i'll give it a good test but from a read through it looks like it will do what i'm after
  7. sounds complicated lol i think its a good idea but i don't think its achievable
  8. I don't think this is possible but is there a way to set all staff say to have an out of office reply with a set bit of text between say 5pm - 5am each day? Lead DSL is asking, she wants to push helpful information for students like child line etc after hours if they e-mail a teacher. I've told her no but if you can, someone on here probably knows how
  9. well yes can't i just set dns as 8.8.8.8? I have a preset smoothwall rule that denies 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 so there must be some security reason to it
  10. I was considering the same just on a temp basis. Just hosting on something smaller so i can switch off the big stuff (which currently isn't being backed up properly). I've just moved to uniflow last week. Its genuinely fantastic everything Papercut can do but fully cloud. All its missing is groups sync from azure which i'm told is being added soon so you might have it by the summer. Staff have adapted to it really quickly, just got to add in students next.
  11. We’re pushing dhcp through our core switch, we have a fancy expensive one as part of a new school build. I should look in dns on the core switch as well. I’ll definitely be asking smoothwall about dns, we have an s10
  12. Thats a point i wonder if we can use our smoothwall filter and firewall as the dns
  13. I am. I didn't notice this before! its obviously an added extra to my A3 license
  14. I've got to the point where i can now switch off all my servers. Any ideas or advice on what to do with DNS for internal use? Currently they're on the domain controllers. Do need an internal dns? if yes what do i replace it with?
  15. Sorry to jump on an old post. Thank you for the script it works well. How do you manage user profile creation? DO you just wait for first login use and run scripts afterwards or do you know a way to force the user profile to create first. Pre-provision as it were. It would just be so we can add the permission before start so new users and near intakes EDIT - I got the right wording on Google! This works Request-SPOPersonalSite -UserEmails

  17. Brill thank you. Something to get working on then!
  18. Thanks Mako, just about to start getting quotes for renewals so i'll make it a point as part of the quotes.
  19. This is education E3 and 5 are for enterprise A3 and 5 are for education I have A3 currently
  20. I've got A3 at the moment but will be moving to A5 this year as we plan on using teams phones
  21. What's the best way to restrict sign ins to UK and maybe France only in azure? I want to set it to help with some of phishing e-mails the teachers and kids love to click from time to time. would it be in security and named locations?
  22. no thanks but thanks for the offer
  23. I've not made it yet My plan is to create a few tables. One that will be line graphs showing department over time with number of assignments plotted. the user would select the departments they want to see the second would be a bar chart showing department numbers of assignments with a selectable date range. You would then be able to drill down into the department to see the department members numbers. Does the salamander dump show the description of the assignment? I've got a meeting with them next week as Locker isn't currently doing a few things we want it to like insights and Apple sync
  24. I found a way. we use Locker to make the teams and accounts. there's an assignment report feature. I've got an excel doc that lists them all! I'm going to Power Bi them into something useful
  25. Is there a way to run a report to see all assignments set on any team in the last 7 days? We want to try and spot departments and teachers not setting assignments in teams
