I'll preface this by saying that were a sixth form and so don't know who'll definitely be coming until GCSE results day. But once the dust has settled, usually around the Tuesday after, they're transferred over from the admissions system into our MIS. Once they're moved to current students salamander generates the accounts. The Assistant Head Pastoral then send them out via mail merge as part of a welcome to the school email confirming their first day arrival, form room and such.

New ISP recommendations

We have a 1Gbps BTnet line, very reliable with one one real outage in the past 5 years. We pay £6,960.00 a year exvat. They do also offer diversely routed backups. but in our case it was way out of our price range. -
New Aruba CX 6100 - Config compatible with ProCurve 2530?
chris11256 replied to CHiLL's topic in Wired Networks
The CX series have a completely different CLI. As someone who worked with Cisco kit before moving to an Aruba school, the CX CLI is far more Cisco like. So just to be safe it may be better to rewrite it. Here's a comparison guide that shows the old commands and then the new ones for CX Switches. https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/c04793912 -
Realistically the storage side of thing's isn't an issue, we're only using 4 TB across Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive. It just means that we'll need to purchase Office 365 A3 to keep students able to install Office on personal devices.

Is anyone else not seeing the new storage report in the admin portal? I can see usage repots, which show similar data. But not the storage report MS point you to.

In our case staff are not provided with laptops. We have desktops in classrooms/work areas/offices, and have just undertaken a replacement of these as part of a Windows 11 migration. SLT can have a laptop if they want, some do some don't. Although their office desktop remains their primary work device. As a whole staff like this approach as they then don't feel as much pressure to work outside school. The feedback has often been that specifically giving someone a laptop implies a much greater degree of working outside normal hours. Otherwise we can loan laptops to staff on a short term basis if they ask. For example we often have teachers do exam marking for public exams over the summer.

Looks like only paid licenses count. Here's a snip from the FAQ 'Paid users contribute to the storage pool, however Student Use Benefits (SUB) and alumni do not contribute to the pool (they consume from the pool of storage). Microsoft recommends setting limits across user groups to better manage the pool of storage in the school tenant.' So Student Use Benefit don't count towards the extra 50GB.

The storage changes & removal of A1 Plus don't start until after the 1st August next year.

Yes although the new 100TB Shared pool covers usage from SharePoint, OneDrive & Exchange online .

Had an alert through the Office 365 admin app this evening. We’re well below ourselves, but think I’ll double check OneDrive usage limits. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/Office-365-A1-Plus

We don't use Fortigate, but have a Palo Alto unit with user based filtering/rules. For domain computers there's a little plugin to install on Domain Controllers which passes username/ip addresses to the firewall, for wifi it's done via radius. I find user based is more effective and safeguarding prefer it as web activity can be pinpointed to individuals. We do also have a fall through rule which means that in the event of no user ID, the user then gets student grade filtering.

Hi All, We're finalising our build before a rollout this summer and have ended up doing a bit of head scratching with images. Attempting to open an image(we've tested jpeg and png) with Photos set as default gives the error 'No such interface supported'. If I open Photos first, then add the folder, all the images load normally. But if I just double click an image, I get the error. So far Google hasn't suggested anything beyond repair/reset the app. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks!

We use Manage Engine ServiceDesk Plus. It's free for up to 5 technicians, so is fine for the two of us. Users can email in or use a web portal, plus you can change the requester of a ticket. ON the technician side there's an iOS/Android app which is handy when out and about for resolving tickets.

[now cancelled] Train Strikes impact whole of BETT 2023
chris11256 replied to elsiegee40's topic in BETT 2026
It’s only the TSSA that have accepted. RMT are still striking, the exact impact will vary according to train operator. -
Thanks, was using the 22H2 iso(downloaded October). Will get the newer ISO and retest. Thank you!!

Hi All, We're going through testing for a Windows 11 rollout this summer and are having a little glitch with the start menu. We login as normal, but for about 7-12 seconds the task bar & start button is completely blank(looks grey). It does then load, and only happens for the very first time a user logs into a computer. Haven't reached the stage of customising the start menu layout yet, so just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem? Thanks!

We've had an Aruba installation since 2019(36 IAP-315's) and they've been rock solid, pretty much set and forget, besides a firmware update every several months. We have one in every classroom, and two in the hall & dining area. This supports school laptops(approx. 130 across the Library & bookable trolleys) and then easily 400-500 BYOD devices a day. Also have Aruba switches, in 2021 we replaced ancient 2510 & 2910's with new CX6200F in stacks, and they've been great as well. They do have more of a Cisco type CLI, but that's easier for me personally.

Hi All, Within the past few weeks staff have begun having problems sharing files with each other. Our SharePoint site is controlled via AD security groups, so for example all staff have access to departmental lesson resource folders. Teacher A is trying to send a file in the Chemistry folder to fellow Chemistry teacher B. They both have access to the folders, as they're controlled via the all staff AD group. Yet when teacher A goes to share the files and sets it to 'people with existing access' it says teacher B doesn't have access. When they definitely do have access. Using the copy link button to send it via Outlook it works, but they'd rather use the SharePoint window to save time. The only change we made was in October, for GDPR reasons we block people from using the anyone in your organisation share option to prevent students getting access to files.

In both schools I've worked in, all staff(even those full time) have had some kind of Christmas shutdown. At my previous school term ends quite early in December(private school so odd term dates), so support staff were in for another week. At my current place the shutdown starts the day term ends. There's no expectation to work, and the building is closed completely. However those who which to work remotely are welcome too. SO I usually spend a few days doing server patching and other bits & bobs.
-
We finished Wednesday last week and then go straight into Christmas closure. Does mean we don't get the change to update trolley laptops. but servers and bits can be done remotely.

This forum clearly has magic powers! By some miracle this afternoon I've had my first response to an email in months!

Contractually I'm Senior IT Technician. It's a hangover from when the school had an MSP and as a result just recruited the same job title they'd paid the MSP for. However, internally everyone refers to me as the IT Manager. I don't mind mainly because I'm paid appropriately. Responsibility wise is generally infrastructure, strategy, budgets and staffing except for terms & conditions. Am currently going through a JD/title redo to make me officially IT Manager, as the JD is literally what I'd consider an entry level technician.

Papercut itself says

Maintenance & Support Expired

Upgrade access until Jul 21, 2022

The email listed is an old one, XMA did a rejig of their email address. Contacting their general managed print/copier people gets referred to our account manager, who has been blanking me for the past few months.
-
Thats what I've been trying to do. However our account manager at XMA is almost completely unresponsive, and emails & calls to their customer services have promises of responses that never come. I've been trying to get XMA to quote since July.

Thanks, will give them a go.
