Our default printer is a leased Ricoh multifunction. It has been an Afico 3245C but today was changed to a MF C5000. Setting it up on the same IP address as I was short of time and testing it it seems to be printing fine and dandy and the web interface is bringing up the new machine. I haven't tested it yet with all our client machines but if the first tests are anything to go by then it's settled itself onto our domain well. Our printers are picked up by local IP address installs on Macs and a mix of Group Policy and vbs for our MS XP and Windows 7 clients. I'm tempted to leave well alone as everyone knows where their work is going to pop out and unless there turns out to be a need to change drivers then clients will just continue printing to the default even though it is not listed under the correct name - won't they?

@geohanson sounds like your knowledge and ability are one as is the advice above. What about the future expansion of the school though? I'd be tempted to ask your SIMS provider if their local server installer caries out cost free Network Health Checks. If they do see what their thoughts are. I have had our local Capita chap in at a couple of schools to do this. His in depth and current knowledge proved invaluable and as a result I still have a full head of hair!

Second for Clonezilla it's free and seems to do the job well without need of huge knowledge of technical issues.

One of my teachers has a Macbook Air that she uses both at home and when in school. At home it's a lightship and logs on and runs as smooth and fast as it was designed to. In school it's an absolutely frustrating donkey. She called me down to have a look at it this morning - it had been powered on for 10 minutes and all that was happening was a blue screen with a movable mouse arrow on it. Removing the battery - waiting a minute or so - plugging in an external storage disk she uses then powering on got it to her desktop but everything on it is SLOW. Trying to launch Safari for example was a complete frustration and I have come back to my office to post this before going back to see if it's actually opened it. It's running on Wireless with a full signal.

Never liked Christmas, birthdays, Easter, Guy Fawkes night or any other of these largely silly and hugely commercialised annual occasions. Now at the age of 60 they all come round far too quickly and it seems to be a constant escalator of one event or another. I had a similar issue on a vanilla network. It turned out that the old proxy was still appearing in a second setting in DHCP With a nervous hand I deleted that second setting and haven't seen the old proxy setting being picked up since. However, sometimes our current proxy fails to pick up cleanly on Windows 7 clients. That said once I go on and reset it locally again it seems ok again.

WSUS here but we are having an issue with XP Pro clients. They persistently install KB931125 which is listed as a Root Certificate sometimes April 2012 and other times listed as August 2010. In History they list as cleanly installed for the particular date. Then next time comes shutdown and they install again?

Digging a bit in Group Policy I can see that in the Student Policy there is there is an Enabled Default Location for Word and it's currently set at %HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH% does this look right to ye guys? On the Default Domain Policy this MS Office Setting is not mentioned at all. Would I be right in thinking that by disbling this setting in the Student Policy will see them picking up their home folder just as Staff do without any GP interfering?

Delving further it's almost certainly something to do with Windows 7?

Same problem for me - and we have only got 70! It's the ones who stand out from the crowd (have come to my notice through missdeeds, have outstandingly strange behaviour or just plain look odd - with a styled haircut for example) that I remember - so, that's about a dozen of them at the most. Gets a bit embarrassing sometimes when the teaching staff assume that I have picked up the names!

Starting off by saying I'm a Window fan. My Y10 daughter is currently using a Medion Akoya P6642 Laptop with a NVIAD Geforce GT425M graphics card, Intel i5 2.53Ghz Processor and 4 GB Ram running Windows 7 Home Premium. She uses this obviously for her GCSE work but also for playing The Sims game on. Everything runs fine homework wise but all too often nowadays she gets BSOD when running The Sims. Everything is patched up to date yet this increasingly continues to happen. I'm thinking the machine is pinched on RAM with the ever bigger The Sims and realise the only way to upgrade the RAM is to go to a 64 bit OS. No answers on The Sims forums etc that we haven't tried - I think. The Laptop is just about 3 years old now. I think the only way to upgrade this machine is to replace the motherboard and OS, am I wrong? Music is one of her major subjects so (groan) a Mac might be a logical way forward but then she would need to buy the Sims and presumably Office for one of those as well. No huge budget available but what are the recommendations from here please.

Thinking on a bit more on this one, whilst I'm delighted that @Steve21 has pointed up an area for me to look at with the GP settings I fear this may not be the root of the problem. I have set up a room of Lenovo ThinkCentres running Windows7 64 bit after setting up the HPs and those Lenovos all do the job perfekt - students are able to save work from MS Office 2010 no problem at all. My gut is telling me the problem is something to do with the HP machines specifically, especially as it (student unable to save from MS Office 2010) also happens on some HP625 laptops that are now over a year old.

I have Fridays off! Back in on Monday and it will be the first job to give it a try - I hope, unless some little dear has created a problem of higher priority today!

Slightly hijacking the thread but how do ATV users get around the annoying fact that if you switch it off it needs the password entering next time you use it again. We have one we are trying out and the teacher who would probably best use it has his SmartBoard as his one and only screen - he doesn't use a connected monitor! Reconnecting the ATV in his classroom involves entering the wireless password and of course it goes in in plain text - so not doable in front of our lads!

You are right Steve, on the affected computers trusted locations are set wrong but trying to change them locally has no affect. Is there a way to do it Globally through Group Policy? What really puzzles me is the fact that the same students using other computers in the school don't have the same problem? odd or what!
