That's an interesting issue you have there, ours ran on a much lower specced box than that, albeit with far fewer users. I've had other solutions though on other boxes (in a previous post) with lower hardware specs and didn't have those issues. I guess rebuilding the box and reloading the config isn't an option, or have you tried that already?

Get an eval kit of the points you're looking at, plug a few in in the areas being mapped and then do your heatmap (turn off the old ones off course!).... gets around the point Neil Mac made. all this assumes you have no budget to improve the wireless system by professionals and you just want to show SLT that they do need to invest to improve the WiFi setup

Create a Folder, dont use the root of C:, you dont want students with access there! If you create it in say Public Docs on each machine and set the relevant permissions, all doable through GPO and basic scripts..

That's what I'm leaning towards, it'll be having at least 8GB RAM and 3 x 1TB drives plus 2 Xeons in it, the hope is to set it up and run a load of VM's off it

It all depends on what you have to backup, is it just server os and files or does it host SIMS/Exchange etc? Personally we use Backup Exec and then agents on the relevant servers. but it all depends on your setup and disaster recovery plan

No it's automated, you click which school is being removed and off it goes, it's not a dedicated server per school, or even a VM per school. Trust me I used to press the button!

@paul OK fair enough, but we all know it takes less then 5 minutes to remove an account from the moodle servers, removing the DSLAM is again fair enough, but this should be factored in to the overall cost, I just think imposing a charge on a school who actually didn't sign a contract with OCL is a bit steep considering the massive increase in cost (in excess of 50%) in recent years. If schools are happy with that then fine pay it, I just think it's not on to charge schools time and again through the nose, lets hope post restructure (@OCL) that they manage to sort themselves out!

Agreed ^^ I'd try and get the OS updated, from the sounds of it they should upgrade well, plus it will make the managing of them easier.

I know this is an old thread but I don't see how they can justify that, especially if you have DSL, just unplug the DSL box and the switch and drop it off at County Hall. I've just left OCL and they are charging schools multiple times for the same thing. They're all about making money, they do harp on about being "customer focussed" but all the internal practices give you a very different impression!

I'm liking the hosts file, I agree an interesting way of doing things... (starts doing a hosts file)

I'd like drivers with vehicles not suited to driving over high ground blocked by snow to think twice and not attempt said roads with no preperation or ability to do so blocking the road when stranded. Then give me the fingers when I drive past said stranded vehicles in my fully prepared one!

I'd love to do this as we have to rely on staff education to stop them taking items covered by DP out of school on plain unencrypted pen drives, thats the reason I'd like to control them, for the OP I did have some info about the dangers, not sure where I got it from or if I've still got it but I'll do some digging!

I know the feeling, I'd realised early on that facebook "friends" should be actual friends, not a "who's got the most friends" competition. The only exception is ex forces mates who we all share war stories and pics from the good old days!
