Wait... That's the way it's meant to work in 1703, right? If the app is installed locally then it will be pinned to Start. Should I be pinning applications directly, or their icons from the Start Menu when I'm creating the Layout XML? I'm so confused.

I've just realised... These shortcuts are local and won't be available to other clients on the network. I'll have to make it all again with shortcuts stored elsewhere, won't I? Edit: Plus, the explorer icon doesn't display between the User and Settings icons!

I've created a Staff and Student XML Start Layout which pulls shortcuts from %ALLUSERSPROFILE% and %APPDATA%. When applied through GPO these Layouts are not applied, despite the relevent policy reported successfully applied in gpresult. Permissions on the XML location (SYSVOL subdirectory) and both locations above are verified correct (can browse and read the XML file and path contents as logged in Staff / Student user). Any ideas on why it's not applying correctly? Any other policies which could conflict with this Layout option?

Would you mind sharing how you've configured your deployment? I have an Application in MDT, but it's not installing. It closes with error 2 in BDD.log if using Response.json for options, and error 0 (successful!) but doesn't install anything when putting all the Workflow switches in the command line. I formed an offline installation using --layout, which installs fine interactively. It's just deployment that doesn't seem to work. I can deploy Office 2016 without issue, so it's not permissions or other task settings; It must be linked to how the task is set up. EDIT: FIXED! Adding the "--wait" switch to the command line forced the vs_setup.exe application to wait for the called installer (a new process) to finish before quitting. Previously vs_setup.exe would close when the installer was launched, which triggered the next task in the MDT task sequence (restart).

Exactly how my network is set up, so I'm feeling optimistic. We're moving from 2010 Pro to 2017... Any major differences or issues reported by your ICT teaching staff?

I'm configuring an automated Visual Studio 2017 Community Ed installation for Visual Basic desktop application development. Works fine, except I only get UWP ("Universal / Modern application") as a option when creating new projects. Which extra workflows do I need to install to enable desktop application development for systems other than Windows 10? Alternatively, has anyone had any issues with just installing the whole thing? Only installed workflows are currently "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop" and "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Universal Current respone.json, in case anyone else is looking to deploy. Build using guidance from Microsoft Docs {"installChannelUri":".\\ChannelManifest.json","channelUri":"https://aka.ms/vs/15/release/channel","installCatalogUri":".\\Catalog.json","channelId":"VisualStudio.15.Release","productId":"Microsoft.VisualStudio.Product.Community","installPath": "C:\\Program Files\\VisualStudio 2017 Community Edition","quiet": false,"passive": false,"includeRecommended": true,"norestart": true,"addProductLang": "en-US","add": ["Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop","Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Universal"]} Edit: Solution was to install ".Net Desktop Development" (Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop)

Did you get this resolved? Looking in to updating to VS 2017 Community ourselves.

At home I have an Explorer icon between the Settings cog and the User icon in the Start Menu. I don't have this in Edu 1703. Is this a policy setting, an XML layout change, or is it just not available? Thanks.

Mifare cards for catering, printing, and door access here. The cashless catering system displays the picture of the student when they scan it, so stealing them is pointless. Edit: £5 replacement charge excluding PP students. Mandatory paid replacement for defacement of card (scrubbing out photo is popular, card is confiscated immediately when seen). We can't prevent children from getting food, so they are given a cheese or ham sandwich and water if they've no card. The vegan option is a call to parents saying they must bring in lunch or £5 for the card

Sharepoint has none of this functionality. You will need a third party such as Salamandersoft or Ruler (there may be others) to build it for you, or build it yourself. I guarantee that if you try and build it yourself you will end up with a flat file repository and a lot of unfulfilled promises. It's what's happened where I am!

I'm receiving the following on my Firewall log, an entry every second. It's been happening since upgrading from Glamis to Inverness-8 approximately a week ago. Time Inbound interface Outbound interface Source IP Destination IP Protocol Source Port Destination Port Rule Action 1:31:24 PM Port 2 (EXTERNAL) N/A (DA Server) (SW Ext Iface) TCP (6) HTTPS (443) 53233 Bad external traffic Reject The weird thing is that traffic from the Direct Access server is being blocked at the *external* smoothwall interface, to which it shouldn't have a route except through the internal interface. Any idea if this is typical, or if I have a bad rule somewhere? The bizarre thing is that from the look of my Helpdesk queue, Direct Access still works!

I'm having issues with the "Libraries" directories (Music, Pictures, Downloads etc) not inheriting permissions from the parent. SYSTEM and the user / owner of the Home Folder gets FC access, but no other permissions are applied. Attempting to take ownership with Domain Admin is unsuccessful, replacing permissions on child items is unsuccessful, logging on as server local admin and forcing inheritance from the parent is somewhat successful but results in a mess of permissions being added / duplicated. Directories are created when users are made in ADUC by using the %USERNAME% variable, inherited permissions from parent are applied to Home Folder successfully. It's only Libraries that are affected; all other directories in Home Folder inherit correctly.

I (Network Manager) received this email. An abridged version was sent to those who have access to Groupcall services, basically saying "If called, take a name and call back on a known good number. Forward suspicious emails to the Helpdesk." The rest reads like marketing fluff.

So the big change is that there is one place to make Windows 10 "Education Ready" whereas with Enterprise you have to set them yourself? I may be being pessimistic, but I think I'd prefer to set them myself anyway. "SetEduPolicies" could be changed at any time to modify telemetry and diagnostics, for example, whereas setting them specifically in a GPO is guaranteed to go unmolested (Or it will break Enterprise as well).

[Solved] SYSVOL DFS replication not propagating
LemonEntry replied to LemonEntry's topic in Windows Server 2012
Ahhh for pity's sake... I didn't check Event Log on any other DC than the FSMO role holder. The errors mrwoberts stated are on the other DCs.- 7 replies

[Solved] SYSVOL DFS replication not propagating
LemonEntry replied to LemonEntry's topic in Windows Server 2012
Event log is clean, with only warnings (resolved automatically) and information. Daily event log sequence Sequence is: 1102 (Stopped for backup) - 1104 (Restarted replication after backup or restore) - 1206 (Successfully contacted DC to access config) - 5014 (Replication stopping with partner DC01, error 9033 (cancelled by shutdown)) - 5004 (successfully established an inbound connection with partner DC01 for replication group). That's all there is for months. repadmin comes back clean: "Last attempt @ 2017-04-11 14:50:28 was successful." for all DCs. dcdiag is clean: Passed test Connectivity, Passed test Replications. All DCs patched and restarted (today's work), no change in status on any of them. They report consistently, though; DC02 (FSMO) and DC04, for example, both report version 5 on computer, version 10 on baseline.- 7 replies

Previews are for testing purposes. They allow you to install next month's non-security updates in an isolated environment so you can check for any issues with applications, policies, or other quirks of your network which may cause interruptions of service. DO NOT install them on your live network. Install the Quality Rollup in the next month, or skip non-security updates entirely and install only Monthly Security patches.

Group Policy Management shows 3 out of 4 DCs (Not FSMO role holder as Authoritative DC) "Replication in progress" for recently edited policies (longer than 24 hours). DFS Management diagnostic reporting shows propagation test data replication status "Arrival pending" and has since test was started 4 days ago. Event log has no extra information. DCDiag shows no issues aside from DFSRevent which are reports that service stops due to backups (at correct time for DC backups). Some policies are several versions out of date, so likely this has been going on for some time. Anyone know how I can further troubleshoot this issue?

Apps don't launch after installing with Configurator
LemonEntry replied to LemonEntry's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I can't believe nobody has encountered this before... The iPads don't have an individual iCloud account and can't access the App Store, so they can't install any apps other than through the Configurator. Is there no way to "activate" the apps when they are installed?
